Those greedy damned oil companies! Reading your summary, you'd think they did something intentional. Nevermind the fact that Yellowstone has been at flood levels for a while now...

Intent doesn't really matter. That shit is their responsibility to contain.

They've taken responsibility for the cleanup. Until technology discovers some magical, unicorn, fairytale pipe that doesn't rupture, this risk will always be there. It's not the end of the world...

I guess I could be less outraged if they did this shit in downtown Detroit. Instead they drag their oily dicks through the few (previously) unspoiled places left in our country.

I like driving my car.
Riding a bike to work is impractical.

Yeah... I'm sure they muscled that pipeline exactly where they wanted without any regard for anyone or anything in their way. Damned evil corporations... Meanwhile, the Gulf is still in shambles cuz o' dem bad ol' oil cumpaneez. I hear that the beaches are covered in tar and that the fishing industry has been destroyed.

The tech is in place to transfer the unrefined oil directly from the oil fields to your gas tank.

You're going to have to prove that. And by proof, I mean pictures of the actual act or seven sets of conclusive DNA results.
BTW, you're invited to the "I just fucked up Yellowstone" house party. There will be strippers and cocaine. Yogi Bear will be there, too.

The economic impact of that was tremendous all along this coast.

Tis is be true. The fishing industry was hammered pretty good from what some buddies told me that use to make a good bit of money from it. Not so much the last couple of years. The shrimp are just now returning to somewhat of a resemblance of what it use to be. Never mind the Orients drudging the ocean bottom for the last 10 years.

I don't doubt it, but it was temporary and overblown. Not to mention, the government didn't meet any of their legal obligations, by the way.

Compounding the problem is that no one came to visit last year. Apart from the military, tourism is the bulk of the industry down here. This year is looking up, but we had a pile of economic casualties.

You know not of what you speak.

I didn't get an invitation

I visited several times and left many $$$ for teh beers. Except the time you bought.

I did. And I spent money in resturants and shops.
Of course, it was in the town of Orange Beach, so you didn't get any of the tax benefits as a Florida resident.
Sorry, wes!
-
And I spent money.
Who is this? And what have you done with PR?

More than you seem to think... I have family throughout the Gulf region from Houston to Sarasota. I still haven't seen any towns closing up, and the fishing is as good as it's ever been.

Whole towns? Of course not, but we lost some businesses and the personal financial impact has been substantial.
Of course the fishing is good, everyone took a year off. I'm speaking to the financial impact only.

Question kind of off the subject for Wes and any of you coastal dwellers. I talked about my fishing excursion last week and one thing that was strange were the seasons and limits for certain fish. It's late June and grouper is out of season? Just 2 snapper per person? Year before last, I was fishing for snapper on the last day of the season in September but this year, I understand the season goes out in mid July. The Captain said there's' no rhyme or reason to it and every change seems to be geared more and more towards helping the commercial guys squeezing out the charter industry. Is this the case and why would you not want to help what I believe is one of the big attractions to the coast for tourism?

I know these limits were put in place a couple of years ago, which is why we quit doing our yearly charter trip. If boat captains in Florida are pissed off that they aren't getting enough charters then they had best start making some of their politicians walk the plank.

Speaking of tourism, I'm wiff you. The hype caused by the media and gubm'et was likely worse than the physical event. To my knowledge, commercial fishing continued, except for a very short time. I'm not sure who took a year off.

Supposedly, these schedule and limit modifications are driven by fish populations, and the fish populations are getting decimated by the commercial boats. When I was younger, none of these controls were in existence. You caught what you could, and you kept what you wanted. We would literally fill garbage bags with snook and snapper, especially when bridge fishing down in the Keys. Over-fishing wasn't a problem back then.

You are occasionally NOT funny.

I do agree the media fuck shit up too. They have a way of doing that.

The tourists. Thus, the financial devastation we're dealing with down here. It was bad enough that the real estate market debacle knocked one leg out from under us, but to have the double whammy of the oil spill was nearly a death blow.
Thank god we didn't have a storm last year and (knock on some motherfucking wood) so far we're looking good for this season.

Well if yall would get the whore houses back up and running then it would not have been an off year.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of response to the Mr. Mom reference so far. Slackers.
