That's it - time to take that sawed off little motherfucker OUT. Jack Reacher is the only man I would leave my husband for... and seeing his studliness pussied away by Tom Crazy Man Cruise is my idea of a nightmare.
This would be like Rosie O'Donnell playing some hot porn star... DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!
Tom Cruise May Be Jack Reacher in ‘One Shot,’ And That Seems Like a Terrible Idea

I know that I have always been very publicly in favor of novel to film adaptations that throw out the notion of extreme fidelity to the source. So I don’t really have a leg to stand on in this argument. But if you’re casting Jack Reacher, a French/American ex-military cop who stands 6’5″ and often breezes into any given burg looking like a giant disheveled blond bum, then Tom Cruise is the opposite of the man you should be looking for. And yet that’s what could happen.
Can’t say I’m surprised, though. Several of Lee Child‘s Jack Reacher novels have been optioned, and all have taken their sweet time to the screen in large part because finding the real Jack Reacher is a difficult task. In the novels, almost all of which fall distinctly above the ‘average’ line for pulp thrillers and many of which are damn good, Reacher is written as slightly unbelievable. So casting dis difficult. (The Rock is often mentioned. Also ) But Christopher McQuarrie‘s adaptation of One Shot, which is set up at Paramount, could be the first to hit the screen, in part because of the writer/director’s relationship with Tom Cruise.
Deadline reports that Cruise is in talks for the part, and that he was part of the option process years ago. It isn’t even his stature that makes him wrong for the part; it is that the common mode in which Tom Cruise works, the very personality that his defined his career as a movie star, is exactly the opposite of what this character is. You don’t hire Tom Cruise to play a hulking but patient and sensitive man who overcomes enemies with quiet confidence backed up with intellect and force.
One Shot is part detective story, part thriller, part action tale. There’s a heavy police procedural aspect to the book, as Reacher and a young lawyer investigate a cluster of murders committed by a sniper one afternoon in a mid-sized Indiana town. It’s easy to get too focused on Reacher’s size, especially as Lee Child writes with that physical factor firmly in mind. Part of his utter lack of fear of most adversaries is due to the fact that they’re no physical match for him. But the flipside is a big deal — when someone comes around who does seem dangerous, it is because they might be smarter and more bloodthirsty. And that makes the villains actually a bit imposing.
Going back to my opening, I’ll quote a tweet from the esteemed Jeremy Smith of AICN, who said: “No reason to be unfaithful with those books. They’re ready-made movies. Just require a little streamlining.†That’s it exactly. The movie quality of the Reacher books is no doubt part of their appeal. You can see them play out perfectly as the pages turn. (Which isn’t to say the print versions are unsatisfying.) The notion of changing anything outside of a few nips and tucks and allowing a few minor cosmetic changes to Reacher is alien to these stories. And to us faithful Reacher fans!
But with Tom Cruise as a motivating factor for the project’s development at Paramount, and given his history with Christopher McQuarrie, who helped the first stage of his pseudo-comeback with Valkyrie, this may be inevitable. The question will be when One Shot might shoot: before or after Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion. The plan is to shoot before Oblivion, with much of the shoot taking place in Pittsburgh, but that could change.

I hate Rosie O'Donnell, but if somebody said "I got a tape of Rosie O'Donnell getting fucked stupid," I'd be like "Why the fuck aren't we watching that right now?"

Holy shit what a bad idea.
Tom Cruise doesn't fit a SINGLE part of Reacher. Not his looks, not his personality, nothing. I won't even see the movie if this goes through. I really don't have anything else to add because the article covered everything wrong with this. What an idiotic idea.

They should cast Dolph Lundgren

You are officially my favorite person today.
THANK YOU for realizing what a fucked up decision it would be for Tom Cruise to attempt to be Reacher... I personally like Daniel Craig or Kevin McKidd for the role (Yes, I know McKidd is redheaded, but he has the brooding personality, the physique, and is handsome without being too "MOVIESTAR" - the hair color is immaterial, really, as long as you get the rest of it right)
I also plan to boycott the movie if it happens this way.

Damn it! I can't find that spoof of him mindlessly babbling and mumbling.

You OBVIOUSLY have never read a Reacher novel. Doobie Bongo would be about as perfect as Tom Cruise, which is to say, no fucking way.

You know Jack is about ten years my senior but I could pull it off.

Remember the Matt Damon rugby movie Invictus? Damon was playing one of the greatest rugby players of all time Francois Pienaar. Pienaar is 6'3" and 240 lbs. Damon was not.

This really isn't about physical attributes. Its just their demeanor. Completely different. Reacher is the quiet and pensive but one of those guys that you definitely listen up when he talks. Cruise has no presence like that. It's hard to understand without reading the books.

This has went unnoticed.....you people are slipping!

This x 100000000000. Reacher is as real to me as any fictional character can be - I have an image of him in my mind, and the first thing I think of is "HUGE".
Reacher is unobtrusive for a big man. His quiet demeanor and lack of "flash" sends the message that he is harmless, and does not pose a threat to anyone - except for someone looking for a fight. Then Reacher's physical attributes are the best weapon he has. Lee Child plays up this hulking brute attribute to the point that it is an integral part of most story lines. How Reacher can take a beating but because of his superior conditioning and brute strength, he can still find the means to keep on fighting. In one book, Reacher drowns a bad guy because he, Reacher, is able to use sheer strength to hold the bad guy under water even as the guy is hitting him to try and escape. NO WAY does a shrimpy pipsqueak like Tom Cruise pull that off

Put on about 75 lbs of hard core muscle and I might agree...

Oh my lord. THis unholy nightmare has come true. Cruise as Reacher in One Shot. He may play a former MP who helps solve a set-up, but the sawed off little fuck is NOT Jack Reacher.
Guess I will not be seeing One Shot.
This is AWFUL.

Tom Cruise is Ghey, with a capital G.

97.58634% of the people who go see this movie will not have read the book, will never have energized the bunny to some romanticized version of a fictional character, and will have no mental picture of who this character is supposed to be.
I hate Tom Cruise as the rest of the world does, but just like Harrison Ford "is" Indiana Jones and George C. Scott "is" Patton, Cruise in a few months will be Jack Reacher -- whoever the fuck Jack Reacher is supposed to be.

Nope. Not going to happen. The people who have never read the books will be very disappointed with the movie, because unless you know the Reacher backstory, a lot of the movie and a lot of his actions will not make sense. There is a very well developed Reacher history that has everything to do with who he is and how he thinks and reacts. The way Cruise plays him, he could be named Tommy Numchucks for all that matters. So other than the brainless lunks who just want to see some dude beat up another dude, it won't work.
And then there are the legions of Reacher Creatures, fans like me who feel this is a travesty and an abomination. Every post about the movie on FB, on EW, on any of the usual entertainment news sites - 95% of all reader comments are negative and universally condemn the choice of Cruise. 100% of those are like me, and would sooner swallow a bag of glass than pay to see and support this movie. I love how Lee Child keeps saying the fans will come around, that a "small" minority are the only ones complaining. Yet he had to cancel part of his recent book tour because people were hassling him so badly at every stop. His latest book did not do as well either, because I, and many like me, see him as a sell out. I'll buy it from a used bookstore someday, but my days of signed first editions and trecking faithfully to his book signings are over.
Our hope is that if it bombs bad enough, they will recast Reacher to a more believable actor. So fuck 'em and feed 'em fish heads. Tom Cruise will never be Jack Reacher to me.

I get it.
If they cast Jonah Hill or Seth Rogen in a remake of To Kill a Mockingbird (in a role other than Boo) or tapped Miley Cyrus and Ben Stiller as Scarlett and Rhett in a new version of Gone With the Wind I'd be mortified.
But my mortification doesn't matter.
Yes there are a lot of people who read the books. Yes, there are little fan clubs and whatnot out there. What you're missing is that even if there were two million people who felt exactly as you do for exactly the same reason, that's a tiny and insignificant fraction of the people this movie is designed to reach.
They don't care about you.
The movie will sink or swim NOT because "Tom's the wrong guy to play this character I have in my head." It will flourish or fail completely depending on the action and story.
Of course all the comments are negative. The small segment of people who are as outraged as you are all hitting the same sites. I'm telling you now that it doesn't matter at all. Not a single bit.
This movie isn't FOR you.
This guy's "back story" isn't going to matter to 97.58634% of the people who go see it. They aren't going to see "Jack Reacher" don't give a fiddling fuck who Jack Reacher is, and won't have any idea that this was a book before they go.
It's Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible, Action, Fighting, Cars going fast, nekkid chick? nekkid chick? nekkid chick?
I'm going to predict now that it does fairly well because people (sheep that they are) will still head down to the multiplex to watch Tom make the serious face and blow shit up. They don't care that he's 5'4" 140. Don't care that Harrison Ford's 5'4" 135 either. It's not going to set records in the Batman/Avengers explosion of 2012 and it might not meet MI numbers, but it's not going to flop. In fact, I'm willing to get there's going to be at least one (if not more) sequels and they'll all feature Tom Cruise -- who will then BE Jack Reacher even to those who later decide to read the books on which the movie they watched was based.
What color were Dorothy's slippers in the Wizard of Oz? If you said ruby, guess again. In the book they were silver. And Oz was a real place, not a dream.
It may not happen for you, but this is happening. Not defending Cruise because I pretty much hate his whole schtick. Liked him in Risky Business, liked him less in Top Gun and it's been a pretty slow and steady descent since.
This is like when Michael Keaton was cast as Batman with freakshow Tim Burton to direct. All of us who were faithful to the comics over the years were outraged. No message boards as such back in 1989, but we found ways to voice our discontent. Then the movie came out. In retrospect it sort of sucked. But it was pretty cool at the time.
There are a lot more brainless lunks with brainless chicks who want to see Cruise do another formulaic action movie than there are people who've read the books and care.

I still want my reacher around.

I hope Jack Reacher goes the way of Ishtar.
