West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart's future with the university is in serious jeopardy, and the situation could come to a head as early as Friday, a source close to the program told ESPN's Joe Schad.

School leaders also are pondering whether terminating the coach-in-waiting scenario it created this year with offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen would be in the best interests of the program, the source said. Holgorsen is scheduled to succeed Stewart after the coming season.

Oliver Luck, West Virginia's athletic director, continued to steadfastly refuse comment on what was going to happen with his school's embattled coach, but did admit to the Charleston Gazette that "no one wants this to drag out any longer than it needs to."

According to the Gazette, neither Stewart nor his attorney, David Hendrickson of Charleston, is in the loop. Despite numerous reports that a buyout is being negotiated, it is not being negotiated with Stewart.

"There have been no negotiations," Hendrickson told the Gazette Thursday while awaiting a delayed flight in New York. "I haven't heard from the athletic department today."

People close to the program say the relationship between Stewart and Holgorsen can be described as strained at best and that the staff dynamic -- including holdover coaches and coaches brought on by Holgorsen -- is unhealthy.

"I don't care, we could have no coaching staff next year," junior offensive lineman Jeff Braun told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette earlier this week. "We're still going to field a team, and I'm still going to go out there and play."

Earlier this week a former reporter for the Post-Gazette told radio station 93.7 The Fan that Stewart had asked him and "at least one other reporter" to dig up "dirt" on Holgorsen.

Joe Schad is a college football reporter for ESPN.

Word is that Holgorsen has been kicked out of some of the finest bars in Morgantown over the last year.  Stewart and his wife have been more than happy to feed this information to the local media.  Yeah, this coarch-in-waiting thing is a great idea.

Another hit piece from Joe Goschnad and we jump all over it.

The guy is a pot stirrer. Some of it may be true, but I'll ignore whatever he says. I'll wait for it to come to a head without him.

I read all of this last week.  Honestly, I didn't see who it was that wrote that article though.

ESPN reporting Stewart has stepped down.

Yep.  Stewart apparently believed when they proclaimed him HC, he'd be that for a while if he won.  9-4 three straight years, and he's out on his ass.  They had no business making him the HC in the first place.
