Title: I Need restaurant suggestions in B'ham
Post by: AUTailgatingRules on May 04, 2011, 04:51:24 PM
I was going to take the Mrs. to Hot n Hot for our anniversary but she does not want to spend that much $$.  Any suggestions to a good rest. that is not super expensive and not a chain?

We like all kinds of food, we are just looking for a fun atmosphere.

Hot and Hot is what?  $200 for a nice meal, wine, and dessert?

I'm not sure if there's anything comparable to Hot and Hot but cheaper.

Bottega, Highlands, and Veranda are all as expensive as Hot and Hot.

I used to like Dodiyo's but it's gone downhill big time.  I'd avoid it.

GianMarco's is good.  If you like fancy Mexican, you could go to Cocina Superior.  Good oysters.

Chez Fonfon is a spinoff of Highlands Bar and Grill.  It's French food, and it's no where near as expensive as Highlands.  But I don't believe they take reservations because they're going for a "cafe" feel.

I haven't been there in a long while...but Flemings is a pretty good steak for fairly reasonable...

Satterfield's in Cahaba Heights is good, but it's pricey.  I don't think it's as bad as Hot and Hot though.

GianMarco's for Italian.

Ocean for seafood.

Iguana Grill or Cocina Superior for Mexican.

I agree with THS on Dodiyo's.  I used to love that place.  Last time I ate there I threw up for 4 hours afterward b/c of something I ate.  Haven't been able to go back since.

If you're looking for a place that has a little bit of everything, I'd go to Mudtown in Cahaba Heights.  It's small and laid-back, but the food is good and it's reasonably priced.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

You can get out of Chez Fon Fon reasonably with a good meal and wine

My favorite would be Hot and Hot and Chez Fon Fon, 26 which is right beside Ocean is great for the Price. Fleming's always has a great steak.

+1

Icon in The Tutweiler Hotel downtown is very good too.  It is a little more affordable than Hot & Hot.

The two "cheap" yet "fancy" places I would recommend are Chez Fon Fon and Firebirds.

This doesn't belong here but when you leave North Alabama you can't have Jack's Hamburgers.  I'd love to have one right now.

That's a damn good point.

Best combination ever?  Two piece chicken basket (breast and thigh) with fries, a biscuit and a regular hamburger.  Top it off with a vanilla shake and a hot lemon pie?

Whoosh.

Double dose of the running squirts, but well worth it.

Hasn't it already been discussed about how Tay-tay is on the menu there?

That's double stuffed hotness.

It's only 47% real beef bi-products.

I'm filing suit

I typically skipped the lemon pie and shake.

But the burger/chicken combo -- and I'm talking about regular 69-cent burg, not the Big Jack -- was a really awesome combination.

I can't eat it either any longer.

Clears it up some, but the combo is still a good amount of food.

Shit, brother.  That's a fucking snack.

Two pieces of chicken half a dozen fries and a little bitty burger?   Appetizer.

Thanks for all the suggestions

I had thought about recommending that too, but I've only eaten there once.  The one time was good though.

Not a soul on here  bit on "bring me the Pounder"  you guys are letting me down.

On Jacks I will admit that since they opened the I22 off Daniel Payne I make my commute to Jasper from Mobile via interstate instead of the backway through Ttown these days. I stop at a Jacks around McCalla I believe its tasty.  Thats one of the highlites to make the trip to see my parents.
