Official Doc: Winston Mortgage Paid Off In 2009
Posted by Brooks on Apr. 17, 2011, 9:16am
On April 7, Auburn Rivals website (AuburnSports.com) Publisher Jeffrey Lee reported allegations that suggested NCAA violations may have occurred during the recruitment of University of Alabama football signee Brent Calloway.
Lee’s allegations included:
- Before Calloway’s last trip to Alabama before Signing Day, the “supporter†is alleged to have made cash payments to Harland “Peaches†Winston, Calloway’s adoptive father.
- Winston received $2,500 from the “supporter†on at least one occasion.
- In addition to the aforementioned payment, Winston was also behind on his house mortgage, but made cash payments to catch up and then asked how much it would be to pay off the mortgage.
The “supporter†was later identified by the TUSCALOOSA NEWS as Russellville resident and Alabama football fan Darren Woodruff. Woodruff also owns the Muscle Shoals, Alabama-based company Petrochem.
On April 12, Jonathan Willis of the FRANKLIN (AL) COUNTY TIMES reported comments made by Winston in response to Lee’s allegations:
Winston and Woodruff denied all allegations that anything improper took place during Calloway’s recruitment.
“My mortgage has been paid off for 15 years,†said Winston.
An official Franklin County, Alabama, Probate Office public document may suggest otherwise.
In a statement submitted to Franklin County Probate Judge Barry Moore on Sept. 9, 2009, First Metro Bank of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Executive Vice President Tommy Darby reported:
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS That First Metro Bank, the owner and holder of that certain mortgage executied and delivered by Harlan Lindsey Winston, Linda Graham Winston, as joint debtors, on August 7, 2000, in Book 568 Page 601-605 in the office of Probate Judge of Franklin County, acknowledges payment in full of the indebtedness secured by said mortgage.
Reporter Bryan App of the FLORENCE (AL) TIMES-DAILY reported on October 30, 2008, that Alabama football signee Calloway began living with Winston in 2007. That year Calloway transferred from the Florence High School district to the Russellville High School district in order to further his football career.
From App’s report:
During Calloway’s days at Florence, (then-Russellville High School football player Darrian) Graham befriended Calloway, thanks to a mutual friend in former Russellville all-area basketball player Siran Winston.
Calloway said he started seriously thinking about joining his friend at Russellville after noticing former Golden Tigers running back Michael Abernathy, a nationally top-ranked fullback prospect, receive attention from Division I colleges.
“(Graham) said I should come down here,†Calloway said. “I was just thinking, ‘Well, they’ve got Mike down there, and he’s got colleges coming to see him. Next year, they could be coming to see me, too.’ I just felt like Russellville had a better (college) recruiting program than Florence.â€
Calloway has a mother, two brothers and a little sister who still live in Florence. Calloway lives with Winston’s father, Harlon Winston, and he’s made a home for himself at Russellville.
After a stellar 2008 season as a sophomore running back for Russellville, Alabama coach Nick Saban offered Calloway a scholarship in June, 2009 - before Calloway suited up for his junior season.
Franklin County Probate Judge Moore noted Winston’s mortgage payment in full, via First Metro Bank of Muscle Shoals, on Sept. 9, 2009.
Calloway went on to star for Russellville during the 2009 and 2010 football seasons, before signing a letter-of-intent with Crimson Tide two months ago.
On April 9, 2011, Aaron Suttles of the TUSCALOOSA NEWS reported that the University of Alabama’s NCAA rules compliance department had investigated the allegations against Winston and Woodruff and concluded that no NCAA impropriety had taken place.
Sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told TideSports.com on Saturday no violations were uncovered in UA’s inquiry into allegations of payments and other inducements to steer Calloway to sign with Alabama.
UA compliance department officials spent Friday in Franklin County interviewing Calloway, his adopted father Harland “Peaches†Winston, officials at First Metro Bank, Russellville High principal Tim Guinn and Russellville resident Darren Woodruff.
In particular, Woodruff was accused of having paid Winston $2,500 for Calloway to attend Alabama as well as giving Calloway a car.
UA’s investigation found that Woodruff had a preexisting relationship with Winston, a relationship that dates back 20 years. Woodruff said he has known Calloway since he was a freshman at Russellville, a year in which Calloway came into Winston’s care and also sat out of football - long before anyone could predict he would be a highly-recruited Division I athlete.
NCAA rules stipulate that if Woodruff indeed had a “preexisting relationship†with Winston, Woodruff would be allowed to provide Winston any manner of benefits. That could include paying off a Winston mortgage - regardless of Winston’s relationship with Calloway.
So why then did Winston tell the Franklin County Times that his mortgage had been “paid off for 15 years,†when a Franklin County Probate Office document may suggest otherwise?
Some might construe Woodruff possibly providing benefits to Winston, who housed Calloway during his days as a Russellville football star after transferring from the Florence high school district, as an activity that might lead to undue influence over where Calloway decided to attend college.
Especially considering Winston’s mortgage was paid off in full two months after Calloway first verbally committed to play football at Alabama.

Apparently, this was the information Jeffrey had that Jay G. Tate alluded to on his blog the other day. I just wished Jeffrey hadn't leaked it to sportsbycrooks. He's a Georgia graduate who runs a tabloid site and has no interest in being objective. Just in March he ran articles on Florida, GaTech, Auburn, and even TN but yet he failed to cover the 5 recruiting violations by Georgia. He's got an agenda and it's to smear programs not named Georgia.

True, but bammers and their local media heralders have spent the last 6 months telling us that he is legit. Jeffrey Lee's just a barner with an obvious agenda.
Love that when Sports By Brooks was spouting heresay with no direct quotes, no sources, and no hard evidence, it was the gospel. Now that he is doing all of those things to bodyslam bama, suddenly he's illegite.
Love it.
-
My attention's done been got.
-
Of course, the first response from every bammer is "Well, he has 5 properties, that may not even be his primary residence".
My response to that is "So fucking what?"
So a "supporter" (I'll bite my tongue to not use the term booster, although clearly that's what this guy is) can pay off your mortgage in exchange for your kid to the school he supports, as long as it's just a rental house?

The fish is the stinkiest it can get before it's considered life threatening.
Unfortunately, we still need one more bit of information to get this going. It has to be proven that Woodruff is a booster, and there has to be tangible evidence that Calloway or Peaches was rewarded by Woodruff for signing with Alabama.
When JLee says "supporter," I hope he's being sarcastic. Or at least baiting.
-
There is NOW officially more evidence that Bammer bought Brent Calloway, than there is or ever was that Auburn bought Cam Newton.
-
Another issue that has to come into play at some point is when did Alabama or anyone else believe BC was a college prospect.
Because you can tell who is a bonafide college athlete their freshman year. And considering Calloway was a star his sophomore year and received a scholarship offer from Bama shortly after, it was apparent he was a gifted athlete well before 2008.
This is where the story, I think, will start running. Did Calloway move in with Peaches because Calloway was a future college prospect?
I wonder what kind of rules that breaks.
-
One more thing -
BC obviously thought he was a college prospect prior to his sophomore year since his whole reason for moving to Russellville was that he thought it would get more attention from colleges.
-
Of course, the first response from every bammer is "Well, he has 5 properties, that may not even be his primary residence".
The fact that he and his wife were "joint debtors" on this mortgage tells me it most likely was their primary residence.

That's exactly what brought the NCAA to investigate Michael Orr and the Tews (sp?), Ole Miss Boosters.
-
That's exactly what brought the NCAA to investigate Michael Orr and the Tews (sp?), Ole Miss Boosters.
And nothing came of that.
So Peaches is clear for taking Calloway in.
But if Woodruff and Peaches were conspiring to get Calloway to Bama and reward Peaches/Calloway financially for doing so, then that's a big no-no.
Also - They've already lied once.
I wonder if they lied to Alabama investigators.
-
I wonder if they lied to Alabama investigators.
This is another reason I see bama actually getting into shit for this.
Sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told TideSports.com on Saturday no violations were uncovered in UA’s inquiry into allegations of payments and other inducements to steer Calloway to sign with Alabama.
Obviously, they didn't investigate shit. "Oh you said you paid off your mortgage 15 years ago? That's cool, we'll take your word for it. Obviously, this document could easily be obtained, and once it was, by Brooks, it was clear that he was full of shit. Bama made a mockery of the system with their "investigation".

Brooks has already answered this question.

-
Winston said the decision to send Calloway with Woodruff was obvious. Woodruff had known Calloway for years and began assisting him with his college recruitment as a freshman.
Shit just got real real.
-
And nothing came of that.
So Peaches is clear for taking Calloway in.
But if Woodruff and Peaches were conspiring to get Calloway to Bama and reward Peaches/Calloway financially for doing so, then that's a big no-no.

I didn't say Peaches was clear. I merely pointed out the NCAA investigated it. You do realize the cases could be very different in their timing? Because Orr was cleared, means nothing at to Peaches and BC.
The bigger issue here is Woodruff, money apparently changing hands, Peaches now seemingly caught in a lie about this mortgage, etc.
-

I hope kharma is a fucking bitch. If you're going to engage in a fucking months long smear campaign of your rival out of jealousy, you damn well better have your own fucking house in pristine order. A sham investigation that declares you're all clean that misses information like that aint too good either.
-
Honestly, speaking of karma or some of that weird New Age shit, I hope Thayer Evans writes the article that puts the nail in the coffin.
I'm already feeling better about Brooks.

I'm feeling better about J. Lee. It would seem he actually had a plan behind his teasing and slowly leaking info. Could there be more?

I have a feeling there is. This seems to be his baby. It seems like this latest article by Brooks was forwarded to him. Not sure why I think that, but it's strange that Brooks in less than a week procured documents JLee would have loved to have.
If JLee is sending bits out to other people, then I bet he has the finished product waiting to be released by himself.
And it'll probably be on auburn.rivals.com.

BINGO! You win the prize.

Lee most definitely did that. Jay G. Tate saw this information two days ago. I'm almost positive Lee sent it to Brooks to stir the poostorm up with the idea of writing his own article in a few days about it.

Tweets by Brooks:
Since Bama compliance decided Peaches + Woodruff = Pre-Existing, mortgage, bank statements irrelevant
Bama compliance: Woodruff could buy Peaches a Carnival Cruise ship for Pensacola trips and NCAA cool with it.
But the bigger story in Brooks's post is not the fact that he paid off his mortgage. It's that they've lied about something.
What else have they lied about? And since JLee seems to be slowly leaking this, what's next to be released?
-
I hope J.Lee includes the the incriminating photos of Woodruff in BDS and getting all snuggly with Saban and call him for what he is, a "booster", when he does it. Screw this "supporter" junk. I don't buy it for one second.
That is an NCAA violation regardless of whether a smoking gun is discovered or not. Taking Brent across state lines to hold him up in a suite is a NCAA violation because Woodruff is a booster.
And this whole mess now with "Peaches" lying that his mortgage was paid off 15 years ago makes Bama's compliance dept look as if they weren't interested in getting to the bottom of this. 36 hour investigation with a "nothing to see here, all is clear" is PURE GARBAGE. Not alerting the NCAA to possible violations and saying we're not filing a report is sufficient evidence to bring the hammer down on the grounds of "Lack of Institutional Control".

So where is Joe Schad in all of this?
Why is this still not making ESPN?
I just watched College Football Live on my DVR from Friday.
Joe Schad was going on about the Tiger Prowl. Made it sound shady as fuck. Followed that up with a bulleted reminder of all allegations against Auburn. You know. Just in case you forgot.
Found the transcript:
http://www.livedash.com/transcript/college_football_live/36/ESPN2/Saturday_April_16_2011/583338/
00:01:09 38 Spring games on tap for saturday, including the defending national champion, auburn tiger, who are once again under the microscope for off-th >> joe schad, who has more from the newsroom.
00:01:22 Joe.
00:01:25 >> Ryan, auburn officials are saying that the ncaa is actively investigating the tiger prowl promotional tour, which you might remember basically consisted of seven auburn assistant coaches over the last two springs jumping on buses, limousines, limo hummers, basically traveling around the state of alabama in the springtime visiting various high schools.
00:01:50 Now, this practice has been abolished by the ncaa.
00:01:53 But the ncaa is still looking into what, if anything, happened during those previous tours.
00:02:00 What they want to know is who did the auburn coaches visit with.
00:02:04 Where exactly did those buses go.
00:02:07 Those are the potential ncaa violations.
00:02:09 Now, you might ask why would they bring these buses and limousines to those high school campuses if it was during a point in time they couldn't even visit with potential recruits.
00:02:19 told me that it was, quote, all a show.
00:02:22 That it was about flash, it was about fluff and it was about schools trying to outdo each other.
00:02:29 Now we'll see if there are any potential violations.
00:02:31 This comes, ryan, at a bad time for auburn.
00:02:35 Keep in mind former auburn player chas ramsey who told hbo he took money while at auburn is scheduled to visit with the ncaa next week.
00:02:44 >> Yeah, joe, from bad to worse for auburn.
00:02:47 That is the case.
00:02:49 Three months ago maybe the best day in auburn winning the national title and it's been all downhill since.
00:02:55 >> You think about that title and that was a tremendous gift to the auburn community.
00:02:59 And to follow that with this cursed scenes of all the off-field issues.
00:03:04 Let's remind you about what's occurred since that championship.
00:03:07 The cam newton situation, the investigation continues into his father and then the awful situation at toomer's corner, allegedly an alabama fan poisoning the oak trees there.
00:03:19 Then the recruitment of a couple of current players also being investigated by the ncaa.
00:03:25 And in march, the investigation by hbo reports on the $100 handshakes and the like.
00:03:31 And then finally, joe schad's reports just a couple of moments ago about what you see there.
00:03:37 You know, it would be a shame with all of that excitement and that title if it came into question as to whether they could even keep that national title like usc.
-
You know, only one word in that transcript actually made me upset.
"Allegedly."
Allegedly, an Alabama fan poisoned Toomer's. Fuck Schad and whoever he was talking to.
-
Someone should remind Schad that If he's going to talk bullshit to atleast carry around a roll of toilet paper to wipe his mouth. The buses never went to the High Schools and the coaches visited the High Schools during the Evaluation period, which is why they were there. Coach Chizik was not among them because of Coach sabban's retarded miget ass couldn't keep himself from clothes fucking all of the upcoming prospects at each school across the Country. Keep trying bammers, hey, I heard that Eric Ramsey or his crazy wife (twittillia or whatever) might be willing to talk. Hit them up bammers and be sure to give your story to Schad...he seems to understand what's going on, LMAO.
Also, Woodruff did not have a pre-existing relationship with Brent...neither did "peaches", before Brent was being recruited m...Woodruff was brought in to "Help Out". IMO, Woodruff is and has been a SPuat booster for a long time, also he has "helped" more than one prospect with his recruitment. Check the vehicles.
-

Prowler, if you have one shred of evidence to back this up, I will send you money.
Or food. I don't have much money now, but I can cook.
-
So, if the media can't take you down the first time, then try try again right? I hope Schad has his jock strap on for when this shit comes back at him. Eventually he will regret the vendetta he has had against Auburn. Its so blatant and he aint even trying to hide it. I wish I could get away with shoving a limb from the Toomers Oaks up his ass.

If this violation is found to have happened in 2009, this would put Bammer within the realm of repeat offender from the last 2 brushes with the NCAA. Which carries a more severe penalty than normal, as also as Xanusus mentioned - a lack of institutional control. Just something to keep in mind.
-
Prowler, if you have one shred of evidence to back this up, I will send you money.

The part about Woodruff not having a pre-existing relationship before he "helped" Brent with his recruiting? Brent was a big time prospect, which is why he wanted to go to Russellville (IMO, Siran Winston probably put it in his head that he couldn't get recruited outta Florence High, eventhough he was a big enough prospect to be recruited out of any small town). He decided to transfer after he completed the 8th grade and moved in with "peaches" to start the adoption paper work so that he could transfer to Russellville. Then Woodruff comes in "to help with his recruiting." - per Darren Woodruff and "peaches". Also, pre-existing relationship is a relationship made before the 9th grade (4 years). And since Woodruff didn't know Brent in the 8th grade and the only reason why he started a relationship with Brent was to help in his recruiting, then the pre-existing relationship between Woodruff and Brent doesn't exist...nor does it exist between "peaches" and Brent, regardless if he adopted him. He did so because of his Athletic Abilities.
I sure do hope that "peaches" and Woodruff respond. Maybe this time Woodruff won't try the threating, desperation approach. Also, the Repeat-Repeat-Repeat window will be open until June 2012.
-
If anyone doubted Prowler up to this point, well you might want to re-thunk your stance. He has been pretty spot on with this whole shit storm.

I see a document proving or that is at least evidence of 2 things: The mortgage was paid off, and Peaches lied about it.
I've seen nothing but conflicting reports on what, if any, repairs were ever done to Cecil's church. I have heard it's still not up to code, and never has been, despite "reports" of a sudden influx of cash that has never been shown.

Try telling a moron bammer that. Try telling them the FBI, even if they had McGregor on wire taps with something to do with Auburn, can't just give that shit to anybody. You can tell them, and you'll get the standard idiotic chuckle like Shane does, followed by "Paaaawwwwl, them Aubies are delusional". Ignorance and idiocy are actually wonderful tools to use in an argument involving facts and intellect, because so often, they present such stupid retorts that nothing can be said in response that would make any more sense than what they said. Unfortunately, they feel they make perfect sense when they spew stupid shit.

Isn't "Darrell" a UGA fan? Either way, he's just as obsessed with Auburn as Shane is.

He worships Shane. When the fucker first started calling in, he constantly said Mark Richt's name as if it were one word over and over MarrRiiiih, MarrRiiih.

I have yet to hear a call from him that doesn't reference the "West Georgia Water Boys". I mean, this guy must spend at least 20 minutes a day thinking up new slams on Auburn while he's sitting in his 84' F-150 waiting for the pay phone to free up at the 7-11 so he can call in to Pawwwll

I was refering to the big 3 that everyone knows: Charles, Tammy, Shane. We have 2 of em and it sucks.
But I honestly think Jim from Crestwood is the looniest of all the callers. Legend is a self absorbed redneck too. Thinks a lot of himself. Still sounds stupid.

Shane is the #1 idiot bammer, but Straightjacket Jim is just pure crazy, and he's one of the regulars, and he's all bammer. Tammy is a mouthy redneck whore. Tammy and Charles are embarrassing. The quality of caller has declined greatly over the last 15 years. Paul should be proud that he's cultivated a living off the lowest common denominator.

Here's the thing. How does he get top notch guests to come on? Because not only does he get them on, he subjects them to those very same callers.

Yeah, it's disrespectful as hell to make guys in the profession like Tim Brando, and Herbstriet have to sit and endure idiots talking shit to them from the safety of a phone line. Regardless of how you feel about any of those guests, it's just not right for them to have to endure that shit from fucking low rent morons.

I gots to disagree on Brando. I feel no pity for that corndog. Ever listened to how he's talked to some of our folks? How about the fight he challenged the one guy to? Stay Classy Brando!

Brando is a fucking low rent moron.
And Herbstreit doesn't take callers. Most of the top notch guests don't. Gary from the Dyanmic Gay Duo doesn't take calls. Tracy Hot Pants doesn't take calls.
But Finebaum does have a large listening audience. That's how he gets those guests to come on.

I figured there would be an exception for not liking one or the other, or whoever. And, yeah, Brando has gotten down in the dirt with the morons, and when he did that, it's on him. Finebaum still should never have set the precedent though. I know of no other show that allows that kind of shit.

Its Jerry Springer.
Change the plot from "paternity tests" and "my husband got my mother pregnant" to "Alabama football" and its Finebaum.
Wait - don't change it. Just add "alabama football" to the other 2. And its Finebaum.

Who is Aaron Suttles?
Aaron Suttles: I looked at the paperwork in the Franklin County Courthouse for the properties in Winston's name. I couldn't find any documentation where a mortgage had been paid off recently.
I guess this is the next step in the chess game. Your move, JLee.
