Some 250 pro football reps, 100-or-so media types, 22 former Tigers ready for Auburn's Pro DayPublished: Tuesday, March 08, 2011, 7:44 AM Updated: Tuesday, March 08, 2011, 7:44 AM

AUBURN -- Move over, Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams. Step aside, Jason Campbell and Carlos Rogers.
You were selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft from Auburn, but you didn't get there under the spotlight that will be turned on the 23 former Tigers who are scheduled to go through Pro Day in Jordan-Hare Stadium today.
Upwards to 250 pro football representatives, a media contingent that will push 100 and a live Internet broadcast on ESPN3 will focus on the hopefuls, but mainly defensive tackle Nick Fairley and quarterback Cam Newton, the two stars of last season's national championship team who are trying to improve their first-round status before April's draft.
They won't be lonely. The 250 pro representatives will be about 150 more than turned out to watch Brown, Williams, Campbell and Rogers, who ultimately grabbed four of the first 25 picks of the 2005 draft.
Trying to make a move in the early rounds after Fairley and Newton will be receiver Darvin Adams and offensive lineman Lee Ziemba. Running back Mario Fannin and defensive lineman Zach Clayton may be in the next group to impress.
The list today includes Auburn's last three starting quarterbacks: Newton, Chris Todd and Kodi Burns, the QB-turned-receiver-turned-fan favorite.
"Everybody is talking about Cam and Nick, but it's the other players we have available for the draft that makes this attractive," said Kevin Yoxall, Auburn's strength and conditioning coach who coordinates the university pro days.
"This year it's the sheer numbers we have and the great players we have."
The serious Pro Day activity begins at 12:30 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium. It is closed to the public, but will be shown on ESPN3, plus live cut-ins on the NFL Network.
The ardent Auburn fans will be watching the complete list of players.
But ESPN3 and the overflow of pro scouts will be on hand to see Newton after a made-for-media workout last month that was followed by the NFL combine that apparently failed to answer questions about how he would do in a drop-back passing offense.
NFL analyst Gil Brandt list Newton and Fairley as two of his 10 Tier I prospects. He likes Ziemba and Adams after that. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. lists Fairley as the No. 2 overall pick. He has Newton at No. 10.
Solomon Wilcots, a former NFL defensive back and now an analyst on the NFL Network, says Newton has some work to do today.
"After showing signs of inaccuracy throwing the ball at the scouting combine he has to impress scouts in this pro day workout. He has to throw, and he has to throw well," Wilcots said on an Internet broadcast.
Wilcots said scouts may wonder about Newton's footwork in a drop-back passing game.
Michael Lombardi, another NFL Network analyst who worked for five pro teams, says Newton will need refinement.
"Whatever team takes Cam Newton, they're taking a very raw prospect who is extremely talented. Much like Tim Tebow last year, you've got to buy in, all the way in," Lombardi said.
Here are the players scheduled to participate, in alphabetical order: receiver Darvin Adams, offensive lineman Mike Berry, defensive lineman Mike Blanc, offensive lineman Jorrell Bostrom, receiver Kodi Burns, linebacker Josh Bynes, kicker Wes Byrum, defensive lineman Antoine Carter, defensive lineman Zach Clayton, defensive back Zac Etheridge, defensive tackle Nick Fairley, running back Mario Fannin, defensive lineman Michael Goggans, offensive lineman Byron Isom, quarterback Cam Newton, offensive lineman Ryan Pugh, linebacker Craig Stevens, defensive back Demond Washington, receiver Terrell Zachery, offensive lineman Lee Ziemba; and, from the 2009 team, defensive lineman/tight end Gabe McKenzie and quarterback Chris Todd.

Cam is going to be throwing for the scouts but he will need someone to throw to. I only see three receivers listed as officially participating (Adams, Zachery, and Mckenzie) so will returning receivers get to go run routes with them or would that be against some obscure rule? Seems like a good way for Blake or Carr to start getting on NFL radars early.

Thats a good question, I haven't thought about that. I'm not sure what the rule is but I would bet that the NCAA would frown upon this, and Auburns NCAA compliance office. Hell, I had no idea that players from the past year could participate in Pro Day.

Thats possible. I'm just periodically following tweets. Jarmon Fortson, one time AU commit, is catching for him too along with those WR's performing in Pro Day

You know, I'm not sure but I know he ended up at FSU but dismissed for violating team rules. Its interesting, though, that he is at Auburn Pro Day. Must have a good connect with somebody at AU.
Are there any of the other AU Pro Day guys from Hurtsboro, AL?

It's actually a try out for Jarmon to get back in AU's good graces.

Seriously though, he was looking like FSU's go to guy for a while there. I recall as a freshman, they tried to force the ball into him 3 times on the goal line for the winning score against Miami. Didn't work...but it was clear he was the guy they were looking to.

Yeah, the guy could have been a great WR for them. Still wondering why he is at AU Pro Day though.

Cam Newton completed 50/60 passes with 3 drops
Cam and Nick are 2 of the best 3 players in this entire draft is what is being said by several scouts.
Todd McShay calls Cam Newton's pro day at Auburn "a vast improvement" compared to his showing at the Combine.

Wait until the reports about Dareus comes out...he'll be inducted into the NFL HoF before he's drafted. "Best player in the History of Sports...anywhere."

Cam Newton likes his work at Auburn's Pro Day, but his preparation for the NFL draft isn't done
Published: Wednesday, March 09, 2011, 9:20 AM Updated: Wednesday, March 09, 2011, 9:22 AM
By Charles Goldberg/Auburn Bureau, The Birmingham News, Press-Register, and The Huntsville Times
AUBURN -- Cam Newton made all the throws at Auburn's pro day on Tuesday, but his work is hardly done.
He's headed to private workouts around the NFL, as if the 125 pro football scouts, coaches and front-office personnel who watched him Tuesday weren't enough; and he will remain under the tutelage of his private quarterback coach heading to April's draft.
Auburn saved Newton for the last 45 minutes of the five-hour show that featured 22 former Tigers going through all sorts of drills.
Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley, each just nine days removed from their NFL combine workout, continued their march toward being an early first-round pick.
What they accomplished Tuesday may be subject to interpretation. How they played helping Auburn win the national championship last season may be more important.
"Workouts are a small piece of the puzzle. We go by how they play," said Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix. "If the throwing is good, you can tell something about their release, you can tell something about his arm. But the only way you can tell how a guy can play quarterback is when he's being rushed and you've got coverage and you've got to throw it in a tight spot and you've got pressure on you. That's kind of what we go by ... the biggest percentage, anyway. Eighty percent, probably."
Newton figures to have already passed that test. He won the Heisman Trophy, led the SEC in rushing and finished second in the nation in passing efficiency. He also helped Auburn to a 14-0 record.
Nix was asked if he learned something Tuesday about Newton that he didn't know.
"No," he said.
The same went for Fairley, who may be the first overall pick.
"If anybody can tell if a guy can play football running through dummies, he's better than I am," Nix said. "But you do see athletic ability. He has great ability, feet, speed and bursts and all of those things. He's a good player. He makes plays on Saturday, and he'll make them again on Sundays."
Newton won on Saturdays, too, but there are questions NFL executives still want to know about his makeup and his past.
"They want to know everything. They want to know who I really am," Newton said. "During this whole process, I've done a lot of explaining about who I really am. I'm extremely comfortable with that, because I know this is a multi-million dollar investment, and they have to know who they're picking. Each organization has to do a thorough investigation on who this person really is: what his background is and is he a competitor? It's just fun and I look forward to talking to team after team about who I really am."
Who Newton was Tuesday was a quarterback who tried to show he could make throws -- he fired up more than 60 of them -- that covered all the distances. His accuracy on 10-20-yard passes was questioned at the combine.
"He was strong in all areas. Hopefully, he answered some questions today," said George Whitfield Jr., Newton's personal coach.
"George and I," Newton said, "came up with a plan to be able to show everyone not only intermediate game, the perimeter throws, the comebacks, the out routes. I just wanted to show everybody what I've been working on since Day 1."
At the very least, it was a change of pace from the last time Newton was at Jordan-Hare Stadium when the Tigers beat Georgia 49-31 when he rushed for 151 yards and threw for 148.
"Gus Malzahn's philosophy is going to be extremely different than the hopeful organization I will be a part of," Newton said.
Newton may be vying with Fairley for the first overall pick.
"That's not something I'm thinking of right now. My focus is on me being the best player I can be," he said. "Tomorrow is another day for me to work on my craft and become another football player. I'm not going to worry about something I do not have control over, but I do have control over myself, to make this transition a fluid one to the NFL."
Newton got a lot of attention, but the fastest one at pro day was defensive back Demond Washington, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.30. (All the heights, weights, times and drills are here.)
Defensive lineman Zach Clayton, who may have improved his draft stock more than anyone, won the bench press competition with 27 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Craig Stevens won the standing long jump at 10 feet, 2 inches. Receiver Darvin Adams and tight end Gabe McKenzie had the best vertical jump at 35 inches.
Newton and Fairley didn't participate in the agility drills. They saved themselves for the position workouts. As for Newton, the work continues.
"This wasn't a finish line," Whitfield said, "it was just the next game on the schedule."

Why is Hawthorne there? Didn't he get tired of football. Or did he graduate?
And what did Chris Todd do? Must stink to set all kinds of records, then come back a year later and the guy after you all but erased you from memory.

I'm guessing the same reason has Jarmon Fortson, to catch for Newton and maybe catch the eye for a scout or two. He did graduate I believe.

Besides his timed 40 and such I didn't see anything else about his performance. Not only did Cam overshadow all his accomplishments over the last year, Todd seemed basically non-existent at Pro-Day.

Winter, a Jr in 2011, caught 3 fuckin' balls in mop up duty. Im mising the joke. I see prowlers attempt at baiting, but the Winter angle is a fail.
-
The thing is, he always catches the ball. This staff has not been a Winter fan at all. Mostly Troop. Not sure why. There were several of the Tuberville holdovers that were looked down on. Here you have a guy that when he does get to play, catches the ball. Runs excellent routes. Gets open. Yet SITS behind Kodi Burns.
That may be the biggest reason he was sitting.
Yet a man who is auditioning for MILLIONS of dollars, flies in this, "only three freaking catches" reject to help him showcase the skills that will earn him MILLIONS of dollars. And this reject does not drop a pass.
Makes you wonder WHY a true WR with his talent sat the bench?
And now, when we really need good hands on the field, this ball catching reject feels that he does not wish to come back for another season.
I did not like KB at WR. I felt he took the spot of a true WR. I will always feel that way. Up until now it was just another wasted position on the field and did not hurt us. But now, the practice of playing the "true AU man" may have run off one of our most talented WRs.
Just makes one wonder what really went on.
I'm sure we have great talent waiting in the wings. I just hope that talent can catch the ball.

Its never just as simple as the coaches getting the best players on the field is it? Polotics, conspiracies, grudges and poor personnel decisions by this bunch of loser coaces eh? Make sure you save all this for the "told ya Chiz really sucked" threads down the road. The folks in the stands always know best. And why did Winter have to be flown in to Auburn?
-
Hard to say. But, I'm more of the belief that unless a player is some kind of problem off the field, the coaches are going to let the best guy play. If Winter were all that, he would have been in there. He may be slow. He may not run good routes. He may not block worth a damn. Who knows?
I loved Kodi (Not in a manly, crossing swoards kind of way) and I think he was the inspiration most people say he was. But hell, Rudi was an inspiration too and the ND coaches didn't give a rats ass. Was Kodi the greatest WR evah? Nope, not by a long shot. But he he was pretty darn good by season's end and had some huge plays for this team. I just don't see the coaches playing him over a better WR just because he made a speech.

Rivals didnt think much of him either. 2 star 5.4 rating. Mid major/role player type. Derek got his degree and is moving on to grad school. He used his time at Auburn wisely, and gets a ring too. Great hands doesnt automatically mean great WR.

Years ago, I'm listening to the Finedong show and this card carrying member of the Mullet Nation, accent and all, was saying how Auburn couldn't win "Cause they's playin' a dang black quarterback". He was arguing Finebung about how a black QB can't do this and that and Bamah ain't never had no black QB....and Finebum asked, "What about Walter Lewis?"
The guy says, "Walter Lewis is a full blooded Cherokee Indian".
I ran off the road and swiped a guardrail.

Kodi will be used as the example of an Auburn man for a long time to come. The TD in the BCSCG was the icing on the cake. A bootifull moment it was.
