When discussing the tree issue with idiots who adopt the "they's just some damn trees..." stance, it would be good to have a comparative analogy to possibly help them understand the gravity.
When you use 9-11 or Pearl Harbor (both completely appropriate in context) the pissy ass whiny bitches start mewling about "national tragedies" and "many people died." No shit. Everybody knows that. But the comparative symbolic relevance (key word symbolic) gets buried in the hyper sensitive drama of those who don't comprehend complexity. It's even happened here among our own -- who, frankly, should know better and disappoint with their responses.
That said, we need some relevant comparisons that wont cause the panty-wearers to immediately start shitting their thongs.
What about these?
Howard's Rock. The poisoning of the trees is akin to some rabid SC fan taking a pick axe and breaking Howard's Rock up into dust. It's just a rock, what's the big deal?
Traveler or Bevo. The poisoning of the trees is similar to somebody turning the USC horse or the Texas Longhorn into hamburger. It's just a horse. It's just a cow. Do you know how many horses and cows die every day? They can get another one.
The Grove. What if some Mississippi State poured radioactive waste on the Grove in Ole Miss, rendering it unfit for human habitation? It's just some grass. Hell, that'll grow back in 130 years when it quits glowing.
When you really consider it, there aren't a lot of traditions that have the staying power, the meaning or the history of the oaks at Toomers. And now I'm pissed off all over again.
It would be sort of like a vietnamese man taking a sledgehammer and destroying the wall in DC. Maybe that's a better analogy that will cause less pissing and consternation from the Chamberlains and Carters.

Leave my rocks out of this.

As opposed to the other side with the saber rattling and bullying of the McCarthy's and Hoover's. And my point was valid before, which you repeated. You can argue whatever point you want, but you throw in Pearl Harbor/9-11 in a conversation talking about a college tradition and you are going to lose everyone because they are going to dismiss you as a wacko. Which in your case might just fit.

You're saying that just to save face. The majority of AU fans agree with Kaos' comparison and opinions on the matter.

We (Kaos and I) agree on one thing, don't need input from a Bammer on family matters.

I think they would be better comparisons if we bombed Tuscaloosa.
Make it so.

The pc bullshit whining aside, you can draw parallels just as you can call both a Pinto and a Metcedes a car. Failing to recognize that because you've adopted the stance thar one should NEVER use Pearl Harbor or 911 as a comparison for anything doesn't change the fact that you can draw the parallels and still be rational.

I didn't say that Pearl Harbor and 9-11 cannot be used as comparisons. For example...
The attack of 9-11 was the greatest American tragedy since Pearl Harbor.
All I am saying is that mentioning 9-11 and Pearl Harbor in reference to something that doesn't lead to loss of life automatically brands you as someone who has priorities out of whack and will be ignored.

So you agree with Saban's comments on losing to ULM was comparable to 9-11?
-
So you agree with Saban's comments on losing to ULM was comparable to 9-11?
In relation to what the mouth breathers felt about it I would bet it was worse than 9-11
-
So you agree with Saban's comments on losing to ULM was comparable to 9-11?
I thought the people making a big deal iut of the, clearly taking them out of context as you are here, were being petty and rediculous. NOBODY HAS CLAIMED THEY ARE EQUAL IN STATURE, HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, OR TRAGEDY, BUT THEY ARE COMPARABLE IN THAT THEY ARE STRIKES BY THE ENEMY AT A SYMBOL MEANT FO DESTROY A SYMBOL OF AUBURN. IF YOU CANT OR REFUSE TO GRASP THAT, AND INSTEAD WANT TO CONTINUE ACTING LIKE YOU DONT GET THE PARALLEL SIMPLY BECAUSE NOBODY DIED, THEN I CANT HELP YOU.
-
So you agree with Saban's comments on losing to ULM was comparable to 9-11?
No because the symbolic comparison doesn't fit.
SYMBOLIC.
The 911 attacks and the attack on Pearl Harbor were designed to cripple the American spirit. Hmmm. What was the tree poisoning objective?
The 911 attacks and the attack on Pearl Harbor were carried out by fanatics who gave no thought to their own personal liberty or welfare. No, that doesn't apply to Updyke at all.
The 911 attacks and the attack on Pearl Harbor were strategically planned to attack symbols of American strength. The US Navy was strong and Pearl Harbor was a shining symbol of that strength. American capitalism dominates the world and no monument more accurately reflected that than the towers. Surely you can't draw any comparisons at all between an Alabama fan killing trees that symbolize the winning spirit of Auburn and are used to commemorate wins and those two attacks.
You can be a PC pantywaist all you want, but the comparisons are perfect in their symbolism. If you look at the Auburn family as a society in and of itself, the attacks on the trees is no different.

Actually, 911 and Pearl Harbor differ greatly too. PH was a military strike be a clearly definable enemy with military and political objectives.
The twin towers had no military significance, and the attack was purely symbolic, not wit clear political or military goals.
91r is the more realistic event from which to draw a parallel. If Saban walked in to the athletic complex at AU and stole our blocking sleds, ripped up the turf at JH, and tried to kill Chizik...that would be more like PH.

Fine, whatever, if you can't see how people might be upset with comparing someone acting on their own to destroy a landmark to acts of war or mass terrorism then we'll just agree to disagree.
-
Here are some:
1. Someone cutting the head off of Touchdown Jesus.
2. Someone killing Uga.
3. Someone poisoning Mike the Tiger.
4. Someone breaking the leg of Bevo forcing Texas to be the ones to put him down.
5. Someone burning Georgia's hedges.

1. Which Touchdown Jesus, the mural or the statue?
2. A different Uga dies like every other year.
3. I think that Bengal Tigers might be on the endangered species list so this one would probably be worse.
4. Didn't Texas and Texas A&M eat Bevo I?
5. They have already replaced the original hedges with new ones in 1996
-
1. Which Touchdown Jesus, the mural or the statue? either
2. A different Uga dies like every other year. Yep, but Florida fans didn't kill him
3. I think that Bengal Tigers might be on the endangered species list so this one would probably be worse. If LSU had a rival and that rival had a fan and that fan killed him...
4. Didn't Texas and Texas A&M eat Bevo I? Yep, but the Aggies didn't kill him
5. They have already replaced the original hedges with new ones in 1996 Yep, but they weren't killed by GA Tech fans
It's not that the trees will die. They're living things, they'd eventually die and have to be replaced anyway.
You're going to die, too. But if somebody kills you I'm not going to accept it. If they kill you because an entire culture bred them to hold a hate that strong? I'm going to blame the culture.
