Title: CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Egypt
Post by: Tiger Wench on February 15, 2011, 10:05:03 PM
Y'all know that I am all about women being able to do any job a man can do if they are physically and mentally capable.  But an attractive blonde woman going out into a frenzied mob of men from a culture where women are treated as chattel is just stupid.  Unreal kinds of stupid.  My company tried to send me to Nigeria and Angola in 2002.  Angola was bad enough, but no way in hell was I going to go to Nigeria - conditions there were worse then than they are now.  Fortunately our corporate security officer agreed with me or there would have been an issue.  At some point, you have to take some personal responsibility for your own safety - and reporting from a balcony like Brian Williams did is an obviously better option.  She tried to prove herself in some way, I am guessing, and wound up gang raped and nearly worse.  Sometimes I think members of the media get this whole "I am untouchable since I am just reporting the news..." and then they wind up being the news.   My heart goes out to her.

Quote
NEW YORK (AP) - CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was recovering in a U.S. hospital Tuesday from a sexual attack and beating she suffered while reporting on the tumultuous events in Cairo.

Logan was in the city's Tahrir Square on Friday after Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down when she, her team and their security "were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the
celebration," CBS said in a statement Tuesday.

The network described a mob of more than 200 people "whipped into a frenzy."

Separated from her crew in the crush of the violent pack, she suffered what CBS called "a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating." She was saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers, the network said. The Associated Press does not name victims of a sexual assault unless the victim agrees to it.

She reconnected with the CBS team and returned to the U.S. on Saturday.

If she had climbed into the lion enclosure to report on the birth of cubs would your heart go out to her if she were mauled?  Nope.  Stupid whore would have earned it.

I don't see this as a media arrogance issue.  It's more indicative of the fundamental American inability to understand the mindset of other cultures.

Except when it comes to football we are a rational, reasonable, logical society.  When we have differences we discuss them and compromise toward common ground.  We divide, debate, decide and unify.

Our leadership today -- and in carter's day -- stupidly thinks you can deal with foreign cultures in the same manner.  Wrong.

They are animals. Many live in conditions that are on par with cavemen. You can't negotiate.  They want to kill us.  You can't, as this reporter stupidly did, expect the mob to follow the American standard for peaceful assembly and protest.

It's a major failure.  They want us dead and are willing to die themselves to achieve that goal. Talk, negotiation, debate are worthless.  So is limited war.  We dont understand that.

First, she is not American - she is South African.  Not sure how arrogant they are as individuals, so I am going to stick with the whole "the media mistakenly think they are a protected class everywhere they go..." supposition.

Second, it wasn't a terror attack for political reasons, so you really can't trot out the whole "they want to kill us and will die trying" thing.  Had she been kidnapped by Al Queda, then your argument would hold up.  The only impact of Islam on this whole thing is the whole "women are third class citizens" part.  Egypt is one of the more secular Arab countries, but there are other non-Arab places where the same thing could have happened - Africa, for instance.

My point remains that a hot blonde woman who places herself in the middle of a mostly male riot in a country where men think their donkeys are worth more than female human beings is stupid.

But yeah, I feel sorry for her.  Her illusions got shattered in the worst possible way.

Interesting that you should bring him up.

 :sarcasm:

I'm sure this is just an isolated incident.  I can't imagine these peaceful protesters taking advantage of a woman in this manner.

Not to drag a topic all of the board but I'd like to point out again that the Great Statesman, Jimmah, thinks that there's nothing to worry about there:

Quote
...
"I think the Muslim Brotherhood is not anything to be afraid of in the upcoming (Egyptian) political situation and the evolution I see as most likely," Carter said. "They will be subsumed in the overwhelming demonstration of desire for freedom and true democracy."
...

He was wrong in 1979 and he's wrong now.

They're animals.  That's pretty much the only part that matters.  You can't reason with or expect common decency from animals.

Walk in the lion's cage and the lion mauls you, my sympathy is limited.
