These are obesity statistics.  Overweight people aren't included.

It's like being fat is the new normal.

They base this off of BMI which is a crap scale.  I'm 6' tall and admittedly weight more than I should.  But according to the CDC I'm obese at 235lbs.

I also play pickup basketball 4 days a week with guys ranging from 21 to 50 (I'm 32) and can still crank out consistent 6.5 minute miles.  My blood pressure is usually around 125/70 and according to my doctor pretty healthy.  According to the CDC I should weigh between 136 and 184.  I haven't weighed 184 pounds since I was in 11th grade when my shirts still looked like they were hanging on coat hangers when I was wearing them.

http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/index.html#Interpreted

But I will admit, there are an awful lot of wheezing fatties in Alabama.

Yeah, in that case I am hosed.  6'1" and 240.

Yeah, the BMI scale is pure crap.  During my physical last year, the doctor said I was overweight and also said he was concerned about my heart rate being slower than what it should be for a man my age. He sends me over to the hospital and they run me through all kinds of electromyocardiopulmonariotechnograms and shit. Older doc.  He looks at the results with that puzzled look that makes you think, My Gawd, I have teh goat aids or a fractured colon or something.  He looks up and says, "Do you exercise a lot?"

Just 6 days a week and I did do a sprint triathlon last weekend.

Hmmm....that could explain it.  You may have teh goat aids but I think more likely the exercise.

Whats funny is the docs that usually tell you this shit are the ones that are 5'8 but should be 7'1 like Buzz according the BMI. Hell, my wife had a seriously seriously obese nurse tell her my 1 yr old was overweight. That dumb bitch.

Our doctor told us our 5 year old daughter was in the 75th percentile for her weight.  We asked if we should be concerned.  He said no, she's 95th percentile for her height.  I'm hoping that the WNBA starts paying better by 2026.

Speaking of docs, I worked a summer job at a hospital in Montgomery.  They had an Internist there named Dr. Ackenhead.  There's a proctologist down here named Dr. Tarwater.

In my profession, lawyerin', there's an attorney here named Bobbie Crook.  Some people ought to rethink career choices or get a name change.

How do they actually quantify these statistics? Do they call the house and ask you your weight and height?

Is this a percentage of people who actually go to the doctor? What about all the skinny folks who never get sick?

Lower heart rate the better. Means the ticker ain't having to work as hard. Consider yourself efficient snaggle.

And yes, the bmi is useless.

I will say this:

When I went to San Francisco for a week last summer, it was noticeable how thin the people were out there.  Joggers, bikers, and walkers (not baby walkers) were everywhere.  Fast food chain restaurants were sparse.

Getting on the plane in Phoenix that was heading to B'ham, it was more noticeable the amount of obese people.  Not only was half of the plane obese, but there was also a fat black lady who had a crying/screaming two year old.  Overweight two year old.  She said to her toddler, "Shut yo fuckin' mouth before I pop you in it.  Shit."

The B'ham airport was littered with morbidly obese people.  And if you look around the city of B'ham, you'll see even more obese people.

And yes, I think obesity can be judged by an eye test.  If you have a bay window hanging over where your groin should be, you might need to refrain from eating for a few days.
Title: Re: Fatty McFatterson

I would actually agree with that.  An eye test is better than the anonymous BMI numbers which really confer nothing with regard to frame size, muscle mass, or even gender.

Um... me?    I have truly come to prefer the taste of Diet Dr. Pepper - it's not as sweet.  Not to mention that a large regular Dr. Pepepr from Sonic has 350 calories, and ditching 350 completely useless sugar calories I would otherwise ingest is not a bad thing.  I don't think like some folks that the diet drink "cancels out" the bacon double cheeseburger, but 350 calories is still a significant number.  No sense piling on, right?

That is the only diet drink I will touch tho - Diet Coke is NASTY.  Diet 7-Up is okay in a pinch, like in an adult beverage.  Diet Mountain Dew will give you the trots.

Thiggidy this.

I hear wild stories of "If you just start drinking them, you'll prefer them".

Bullshit.

Un-possible.

If I want a flavored drink, I want a flavored drink. A sweet flavored drink. Sacharin tastes like arificial synthetic asshole.

I'm the kind that will never complain that the tea is too sweet. Ever.

Yeah, I have got to the point where the regular drinks are too sweet. I can thank my wife for that. I use to slam a Mountain Dew every morning, caffeine primarily. Now, well its Diet Dew. As for the fast burgers, well, I have got to the point where those tear the shit out of my stomach, literally. I usually I need a reminder why I can't eat like that anymore though.

I do it all the time.  I was creeping up on the 250 range and the dr said my blood sugar was getting too high.  Switched off the sugar sodas, sweet tea, and fruit juice and dropped 10lbs and didn't have to go on meds for my sugar.  And yes, I would rather drink water, diet cokes, and unsweet tea than take pills the rest of my life.

Incidentally, a coke has 27g sugar per 8oz, OJ has around 22g per 8oz, apple juice has close to 28g per 8oz.  Check out the labels before you drink something you think is healthy.  Milk also has a lot of sugar.

Sort of right. Not all sugar is equal. The sugar in your soda? Not sugar at all as we know it. Try corn syrup. The further away sugar is from its pure form the worse it is for you. Corn syrup is used in almost everything now because its cheaper and subsidized. Hence the ethanol craze out of the Midwest. Milk and fruit juice have natural, simple sugars, which won't stick to your belly as easily. Listen when you hear the terms "processed food" and  "refined sugar". They actually mean something.

Yea, I was kind of in the same boat.  Creeping up to 250 and the saw bones wanted me to go on cholesterol medicine.  Told him to hug a root.  I was not getting married to a medication if I could help it. Take omega 3 everyday and run three miles 3 - 4 time a week.  Back down to 220. When it warms back up I'm gonna drop another 10 and call it good.

The corn syrup that everyone has fits over is "high fructose corn syrup" which has had its glucose converted to fructose, the same sugar that is in fruit juice naturally.  Fructose is fructose whether it has been processed from glucose or naturally occurring from the fruit.  Chemically it is identical.

http://www.hookedonjuice.com/

Now milk sugar is lactose, which some people can't process at all (lactose intolerant).  But it is only about half the amount of carbohydrates per 8oz serving as juice or soda.  But still, who only drinks out of 8 oz glasses.

Glucose, fructose, lactose, and maltose are all sugars and all affect your body similarly in the short term.  Fructose based beverages have been shown to negatively affect your liver and response to insulin more than the other forms.  Those include the fruit juice drinks as well.  Fructose is used more than the other forms of sugar because it is cheaper than sucrose (table sugar) and glucose, maltose, and lactose just don't taste very sweet.

Actually no its not the same.

For one, its processed. While it may LOOK the same on paper, your body knows the difference and digests it differently.

Evidence in trends since the 70s also proves otherwise. There's a distinct parallel between obesity and diabetes AND the advent of hfcs.

It also doesn't illicit an insulin response from your body which tells us to stop eating or drinking that beverage full of sugar. This is huge. People overindulge not even knowing.

FYI...although its not my job, I'm actually a nutritionist. I don't eat perfect and I like treats in moderation, but generally try to eat healthy stuff.....Like beer.

Well that's what I said in my post.

Quote
Fructose based beverages have been shown to negatively affect your liver and response to insulin more than the other forms.

We switched to HFCS sodas (I guess like you said in the '70's) from sucrose sweetened beverages causing a rise in type 2 diabetes (like you said in your post), aka resistance to insulin (like I said in my post).  But I still believe that the fact of the increase in type 2 was due to an overall increase in fructose consumption, not the fact that the fructose we are consuming was glucose at one point.

But speaking of beer and sugar, one of my favorite beer styles is Sweet Stout (aka Milk Stout).  It is a stout that was brewed with the addition of lactose (milk sugar that is unfermentable) to the brew making a rich, sweet dark beer.  My favorite was discontinued a couple of years ago.
