Title: Gene Chizik and Undefeated Seasons...
Post by: JR4AU on January 14, 2011, 03:21:02 PM
We've all heard that an undefeated season in college football is more rare than a NC.  We all know that Auburn has 3 in the last 18 years which puts us in rare company.  But what about coaches?  In the last 6 years, Gene Chizik has played a significant role in 3 Unbeaten/Untied seasons.  Granted "only 1" as a HC, but I think you still have to wonder what he's learned about it, and how to make it happen.  I don't have the time to find out how many these coaches were a part of as Asst. Coaches, but I think their HC records should shed some light on the accomplishment.

Joe Paterno: 5 (158 seasons)

Bear Bryant: 3

Nick Saban: 1

Mack Brown: 1

Pete Carroll: 1

Bob Stoops: 1

Urban Meyer: 1 (at Utah)

Chris Petersen: 2 (5 seasons as Boise)

Bobby Bowden: 1 (in his 34th season)

Bo Schembechler: The vaunted Mich coach never had either a NC or an unbeaten/untied season in 21 as a head coach.

Woody Hayes: 4 (2 in 26 seasons at OSU, and 2 at Denison Univ. in '47 and '48)

Darrell Royal: 2 (20 season at TX)

Barry Switzer: 1 (16 seasons at OU)

Vince Dooley: 1 (25 seasons at UGA)

Shug Jordan: 1

Pat Dye: 0

Phil Fulmer: 1

Steve Spurrier: 0

Robert Neyland: 1 (had 6 unbeaten seasons each with 1 tie between '26 and '32)

Frank Broyles: 1

Jim Tressel: 1

Gary Patterson: 1

If I remember correctly Florida has never had an undefeated season, which is odd considering their success of late.
