Title: The Roof...The Roof...
Post by: Snaggletiger on January 11, 2011, 08:11:59 AM
The Roof is on fire. Kudos to this man.  I am the first to say that I have never been a fan of this guy since the day he was hired.  I dogged him last year and much of this season as well.  I now take a huge bite of crow and choke it down.  Outstanding job in shutting down the most potent offense in the country in the biggest game in Auburn history.

If anyone cares to remember, I have been saying for a while that this D will start coming together midway through season #2.  If Roof can find someone...anyone to replace Torched at CB next season, this can be a very, very good unit in 2011.

Total truth. That guy has single-handedly given our opponents more TDs and big plays than anyone else on the team. I am so glad that Kelly was too stubborn to just throw the ball toward Torched every play.

Roof played a lot of guys last night too. Freshman Jake Holland got in the game and almost made a sack on the first play. He had these guys dialed up.

In the words of Nick Flairly...Wooooooooooooo.....Woooooooooooo!

Did y'all see the camera shot of Roof fist pumping after we stuffed the Ducks on the goalline?  He actually showed some passion - Muschamp-esque, if you will.  First time all year I have seen that.  He looks like a librarian but he was a fucking monster DC last night.  Wow.  I do wonder if Chiz had any hand in the defensive scheming and planning and preparation though.  Still, credit where it is due.

Roof rocked.

I'm actually stoked to see what he can do with next years defense and all the young talent. We're gonna miss the seniors, but I see a lot of stars in the making on the D.

I agree.  I haven't been a big Roof guy, but we seemed to get better as the year went on.  The way our defense played in our last two ballgames has made me buy into Coach Roof.  WDE!

Listening to several of those videos, I notice one big theme. The team is giving the Auburn fans what they deserve. How many times do you hear a player talk very positive about the fans and know they mean it from the heart. The other big theme is like it has always been, FAMILY. Chizik has instilled in these young men what it is all about. The selfish ME will not win. TEAM. TEAM. TEAM. FAMILY. It is truly great to be an Auburn Tiger.

The difference in this defense's good play, and bad play, was primarily how aggressively they played.  Why they played so soft early, and clamped down late is beyond me, but what is not beyond me is that it was good enough to win a NC.  Last night, we played aggressively from start to finish, special teams included.  Clearly, scheme wasn't the issue here, though I never thought it was.  Fariley headed up an otherwise no-name defense, but they played huge when it counted.

The kick coverage teams were outstanding.  I had heard Oregon was going to torch us for about three TDs on punt returns.  Never happened.

Never listen to Brent Mushberger.
