Title: Ladarious Phillips
Post by: AuburnChopper 3.0 on December 22, 2010, 10:42:48 AM
is working out at Defensive Tackle.  Tracy Rocker says the move IS NOT permanent, but I think they're letting him get a taste of it.  I think they're hoping he likes it.  With his athleticism at that size and a little Yox work, LP could be HUGELY dangerous on the D Line.

Thoughts?

Do bowl games not count against a redshirt? I assumed that when I read the article, but it didn't flat out say.

Cause otherwise, it sounds like we're planning on burning a redshirt for one game the last game of the year?

Educate me.

Yes, they do, as I understand it...but bowl practice is valuable practice time...it's like getting an extra spring practice...just practicing him doesn't mean they're going to play him in the bowl.  It's a chance to get him some work, and maybe get him involved next season.  All the talk about him as a "load in the backfield" was fun...but facts are he doesn't fit in to the offense in a big way...at most in goal line...I suspect they'd like to find a way to let him contribute more.   As a pass rushing DT might be just the ticket.  Who knows?

They do count and if he plays it would burn his redshirt.

I have read nothing that leads me to think that he will play in this game.

Simply put, no he's NOT playing in the game.

He's taking advantage of the extra practice, as all of the other redshirts (that are physically able) are.

One of the great things about getting a bowl, let alone one that's almost an extra month outside your normal schedule.

Rocker seems to be suggesting further in the Rivals report that LP could play both ways.  Said he's a good player on either side of the ball.

IMO, if Phillips has a future beyond Auburn, it is in the interior line on defense. His dimensions dictate it. He has great feet with overall agility and  a burst of quickness, far more than most individuals his size to come through Auburn.

Fairley was not a great force last season and what seemed to click with him might also work for Phillips with some work. I suppose it depends on his mentality and work ethic. But something happened with Nick, and it wasn't just learning a few moves that made him the Lombardi winner. Phillips can always be a short yardage specialist when needed.
