Title: The quandry for opposing coaches....
Post by: JR4AU on November 27, 2010, 12:11:20 AM
The last 2 games we've spotted opponents 3 TD leads.  The logical thing to do with such a lead, is to go a little more conservative in play calling, run the ball, and run the clock.  Granted, if it's still in the first half, you got to run your offense, but no matter how hard you try to avoid it, you're going to err on the side of conservative play calling.  That's the rub...you can't run the ball on Auburn, and before you know it...you're in 3rd and long, and predictable situations.  So fucking what we give up yards and points through the air?   No coach in this league has the guts to keep slinging the ball up by 21 or more, and it's not really the recommended way to go.  But, our offense is 3 possessions, and just a few minutes of clock from catching your ass if you don't move the chains.  But now when you were getting chunks throwing on first down, you're now running on first, and second, and the aforementioned 3rd and long happens, once, punt, Auburn scores, and again, and it's now a ball game.   And, IF you decide to keep the hammer down, and throw a couple of picks that lets us back in the game?  My oh my, you'll be roasted by the know it all fans.   Then, just when you realize you're in some fucking trouble with a once comfortable lead...our defense starts pinning their ears back and making things happen.  In this game, it just so happened that they were making a few plays that kept the lead from getting insurmountable, and then just got better.

If I was Spurrier, I'd throw the ball 60 times next week, and 45 of them t Jefferies, and I would do it if I was up by 3 scores or down by 3 scores.  My plan would be to win by 30, at the risk of losing by 30.  Does he think he can impose his will on us with Lattimore?

Our offense?  Not a one man show, but we got one man that is damn good.  We also have an OC that came in to the IB with a very conservative game plan.  After all, we've dominated in the trenches...lets push bammer around too.  When you're a front runner...you stick to what you do.  You don't assume it won't work, you assume it will.  The "genius" is in being able to do something else when what you do isn't working.  Well bammer had a good game plan, and played hard.  Well timed and well conceived blitzes, and good discipline in rush lanes and gap control.  A blueprint for stopping the most prolific offenses in SEC history.  But we keep on keeping on, AND Malzahn makes some nice adjustments.  First half was all powers and sweeps...bammer had it sniffed out...we went to Counters and Zone Cutbacks...and the TD to Lutz was a bit of something different too.  Malzahn did a great job...the Gimmicky HS coach went head to head with the best defense and best Def. coach in the SEC and he out foxed him, and did it in the master's house.  It wasn't always pretty,it rarely is against good defenses, but it was enough.  Malzahn never panicked either, nor did the team.

This comeback, on the road, against a very good bammer team, with the NC on the line?  Well it was monumental, and I can't recall a moment in Auburn football history like it in my lifetime.

If it weren't for the "issues"...Cam, I believe, would win the Heisman with a margin greater than any in the history of the award.

We have another important game next week.  Like I mentioned, as a front runner...you have to do what you do, so I believe a the losing team coming in to a rematch has an advantage in knowing what you'll do, while having the freedom to completely revamp their approach to their first game plan.   This team will be emotionally and physically spent after this one...they need to get their head back on straight, and win one more game this next Sat. in Atl.

War Damn Eagle.  It's great to be an Auburn Tiger.

Excellent post.

I can't figure out why teams get cute against our defense.  Just throw slants, curls, hitches, posts, flags, and gos to Julio.  He should have finished with 300+ yards receiving and laughed his way into the record books.

I do worry about South Carolina's receivers.  Our guys can't cover the tall ones.  That's been proven.  USCe has three or four guys over 6'3.

Our best bet is to force Garcia into stupid mistakes, which he is very capable of committing.

As for our offense, we won't see another team with that much NFL talent on defense.  LSU's was close, but they didn't have a blitz guru like Saban calling the plays.  South Carolina won't be able to match what Alabama did, and if they try, they'll find themselves giving up big touchdowns to Cam Newton.

THS, that is my hope for next week - that just like he always does, Stephen garcia will remember that he is Stephen Garcia.

And that is the KOD for Sakerlina.

Nice post JR. The single best adjustment I saw was the swing pass to McCaleb. We haven't done that all year. A lot of the time, people would focus on Cam when faking the ball to McCaleb. In the second half, we continued to fake the ball to McCaleb, however, then Cam would stop and throw it to him in the flats and he was WIDE ASS OPEN every time. We hadn't done that all year! That was beautiful...

Right WE. and the sell job to the right on the comebacker to Lutz was an added wrinkle.  But I still can't get over the adjustments after halftime our DC makes. I'm proud of Ted Roof. Yes we get beat ugly in the secondary but he can bring the heat when it counts the most. Did you see Fairley at LB? That was certainly different.

Yes, I believe you're right on that too.   They wanted Cam keeping the ball, and that was an adjustment to make them over commit to stopping him after the fake.

Actually, bammer had a novel game plan against us.  They actually wanted Cam keeping the ball as they believed they could bottle him up inside...and they did for the most part.  They forced keep reads, and never let Cam get a hole or a head of steam.   I want to go back and watch it again now that I'm not as emotional about it....both sides of the ball made some very nice adjustments.

Dyer was just getting a started in the first game.We had two key fumbles that cost us points that night. Auburn bottled up Lattimore pretty well and I don't understand why they do not throw to him a half dozen times a game. Not sure if So.Carolina can defend Cam like Bama. But I think our defense has improved since then and perhaps we won't have to wait an entire half to make the necessary adjustments. Load the box, try to limit Jeffrey to half of Julio's production and smack Garcia around plenty. Atlanta should be happy hunting ground for the offense.

I take issue with this. This is an old wives tale.

SC has an advantage in knowing what we will do ? Whaaa ? I think we will know just as much about what they do. With the exception that we know what to do to beat them. They don't know what to do to beat us.

We have just as much freedom to revamp our game plan. Should we want to. But we don't. We are a different team that SC faced at the begging of the year. The Old Ball coach will have his work cut out for him trying to gameplan for this one.

What happened the last time we played a good  SEC East team for a rematch ?

Each team has film on the other...they each know what the other does.  I just think the team that loses the first one has a bit of a leg up IN THAT DEPT.   Not saying it's a sure win for them....just something to think about.

Overall, I agree.  We're the fave...we will do what we do, and it will be up to SC to stop us.   I think we may throw the ball a good bit.

SC just wrapped up a thumping of Clemson.  They played pretty well.  They have A. Jefferies.  They'll score some points.

Blake made Gilmore look bad a few times too. I like my chances with Gus the second time around.

This.  Every fucking bit of it.

Other than punking an Alabama team that has had some troubles staying on track this year what the fuck has Spurrier done?  Not saying they will not come to play but people are acting like they are the only ones who get prep time.

I think a good thing (for AU) that this squad is putting in opponents heads is: "What do we have to do to beat these guys?" Not saying Alabama is the best team ever, but we certainly have a shitload of talent. A little short on maturity and discipline, but a ton of talent, and great coaches. I understand that USCe beat us, but I'm going to say it anyway. If Alabama beat AU down like we did in the first half and held a 24 point lead at halftime, and we still lost, no fucking way the cocks are going to beat you guys. Spurrier had to have seen some of that game by now and asked himself just what they have to do to beat you guys.  I hate to say it, but I just don't see anybody that can beat AU.

good read.........but your suggestion on what Spurrier should do assumes something very dangerous.......that any ones O-line can keep a QB upright against our D for 60 (or a large number of) pass attempts .....this simply has not happened all year.

This AU D, somehow some way has beat & battered into a pulp just about every single QB we have faced.

To beat AU, a team simply has to play a very very good game.......dare say a perfect game.

Turn the ball over or punt more than 4 times in a game against AU and you are toast.

Didn't assume that, just stating that's the best chance they got.  Auburn has a way to beat you in every phase of the game.
