Title: Do we need to recruit more Newtons?
Post by: Thrilla on November 20, 2010, 12:14:23 PM
In honor of Iron Bowl week, I ask you this important question:  should Auburn recruit more Newtons?  And, it's interesting that the roles were somewhat reversed 38 years ago.

1972.... Punt, Bama, Punt

Quote
In 1972,

The decade of the 1970s was colored in crimson as far as the Iron Bowl is concerned but the Auburn Tigers were not without their moments of emotion and glory. Alabama installed the wishbone offense and won three more national championships before the decade ended but perhaps one of the greatest upsets in the history of the storied series occurred in 1972 in what has become known as the "Punt, Bama, Punt" game.

Alabama came into the game undefeated, ranked number two in the nation. Auburn came into the game as heavy underdogs despite a 9-1 record. The Crimson Tide was completely in control of this game for three quarters and had a 16-0 lead with only 10 minutes left in the game. An Auburn drive stalled and Coach Shug Jordan was booed as he ordered his team to try a long field goal. It was good and the margin was 16-3.

Then, Alabama got the ball and could not move it. Auburn's Bill Newton blocked an Alabama punt and it bounced into the hands of teammate David Langner who ran 25 yards for a Tiger touchdown and that narrowed the gap to 16-10.

Again, the Auburn defense was tough and Bama's Greg Gantt was sent in to punt again. The ball was snapped and Newton broke through and blocked the punt and Langner again scooped it up for a 20-yard gallop to paydirt. The extra point was good and Tide fans were stunned as the scoreboard revealed a 17-16 Tiger win.

Bill Newton blocked three (3) kicks that day.  That is why uat had 16 instead of 17 points.

Dual purpose or pro-style ?

I'm praying for defensive tackles- mean, hate-filled, elligible sonzabitches.

I'm really looking for any long-snapper prospects by the last name of Newton.

How about a punter named Bliss or Colbert?

What is this long snapper? Every snapper I have encountered has been a deep snapper after our co-mingling. I give uterus massages.

Without Newton 5-6 with Newton 11-0. I would say allbarn needs Newtons every year.

Seeing as how we were 8-5 last year without him with more depth this year, I'd say you are dead wrong.

Its not easy to speak to the deaf and show the blind. The bammers are both. Hellen Keller comes to mind; sorry Keller, no offense.

This year Miss State is a loss, Clemson is a loss, So Car is a loss, Kentucky....Kentucky is a loss, Arkansas is a loss, and LSU is a loss. Take off the orange tinted glasses and really look at those games. Would allbarn had those games without Newton? The answer is no. But allbarn has him, allbarn won those games and your football team has a chance to win it all. If allbarn can find a way to get past the Tide the BCSNT will be yours.

Listen bammer, I think we all understand your point but do you actually know this to be fact? No. Do you own a Delorean? Very seriously doubt it. So, how can you predict all of this. Does it justify something for the bammer nation? Sure Cameron Newton has taken this Auburn team from good to great but can you without a doubt make such as statement with full knowledge? If so, we all need to talk because we could make serious fucking money.

Oh, and by the way, Auburn will win and it will be because we have Cam Newton regardless of how bama tries to stop him.

My Delorean is in the shop. And if you saw my Tigersx FFT you would know it has been in the shop for a while now. Cam is an awesome football player not just an awesome QB. Alabama will try to stop Cam and if they do then I feel like Alabama will win the IB. If not, the results will be the same as they have been all year. Another W for the tiggers.

This.

Like most games if the QB can be made to be one dimensional then the other team has a damn good chance.

When the Delorean gets out of the shop, we need to talk.

Gus is gonna put up points with whoever he wants at qb....we set offensive records last year with Chris Todd for Petes sake. Id also say the cam that is playing now is not the cam that played against sc, clemson and msu. Clemson and msu wouldn't come close now. Do you really think we get held to 17 now?

This would be a fact.  As I said in another thread, The Chin has admitted they really didn't realize how much to turn Cam loose until they saw what he could do in games like UK. Malzahn's offenses have put up record numbers wherever he's been and like 2001 said, he did the same using a limp arm QB with the mobility of a pregnant sloth last year.  Do I think AU would be 11-0 if Barrett Trotter was our QB?  Nope, couldn't even try and joke about that with a straight face.  Could we be looking at two 9-2 teams right now playing in the Iron Bowl.  I think that would be very possible.

Miss State - Maybe
Clemson - Considering that Cam threw 2 interceptions because he wasn't a really polished passer at that point, and only ran for 68 I would have to say he wasn't the biggest contributing factor to us winning that night.
South Carolina - Maybe
Kentucky-Don't think so, we ran all over them Dyer had 7 ypc and McCalebb had 6ypc.  Cam also threw an interception
LSU-definitely would have won.  Consider that we ran on them with Cam true, but Dyer had 100 yards, McCalebb had 84.

Auburn's offense is not as much of a one man show as ESPN leads people to believe.
