Can someone post the article today on Josh Bynes and tackling. Read it in our local paper but I can't find it on line. Best article I've read all year and echos what I've been pissed with Roof about since he got here. Tackling....what a novel idea.

This it?

Better tackling a must for Auburn defense
Josh Bynes’ eyes lit up, his voice raised to a level it hadn’t reached yet and he started talking a mile a minute in the interview room after Auburn’s practice Sunday night.
The senior linebacker feels like the Tigers aren’t tackling well enough.
He’d like to see that change.
“You’ve got to hit them,†Bynes said. “I’m not a low-hitting type-person and I think that’s what we’ve got to eliminate from the secondary on down ... eliminate those low chopping hits. I hate them anyway. I’ve never chopped anybody.
“You’ve got to hit them straight in the mouth. You’ve got to hit them dead in the legs. You’ve got wrap them up. Do something.â€
For all the well-deserved plaudits Auburn’s front four is receiving for its performance this year, the back seven has still left a little something to be desired.
Even in lopsided wins like the one the Tigers enjoyed against ULM on Saturday, there were enough whiffs to keep defensive coordinator Ted Roof on edge.
One in particular stood out, a third down play in which linebacker Daren Bates met Warhawks receiver Rodney Lovett before the first-down marker, but Lovett was easily able to peel off Bates’ hit and get the first down.
“Sometimes it’s the angle you’re entering in. It could be the running back’s pad level. It could be your body position,†Roof said. “There are several factors it could be, but the bottom line is it can’t be.â€
That last statement rings especially true this week against Kentucky and its two playmakers, Derrick Locke and Randall Cobb.
Locke and Cobb have combined for 340.2 all-purpose yards per game this season and have even been decent in the Wildcats’ two losses, with Cobb catching six passes for 108 yards and a score in the Ole Miss loss last week and Locke rushing for 103 yards in Florida’s blowout win two weeks ago.
Those two have the speed to turn a 4-yard pass route into a 40- or 50-yard gain. The Tigers found that out first-hand watching the two run for a combined 235 yards in the Wildcats’ upset win last year.
“With that head ducking and all that other stuff, you’ve just got to hit them,†Bynes said. “That’s why you see us miss a lot of tackles because we do some dumb tackles, which is very stupid. I think we need to go ahead and lean into them, wrap up and make the tackles.â€
Linebacker Craig Stevens echoed Bates’ statements from last week, saying Auburn defenders have to stop going for so many “kill shots†and focus more on fundamentals.
“Especially when you feel like you have a guy perfectly set up, he’s not looking or anything, it’s one of those where you can go in and feel like you’ll kill him,†Stevens said. “It doesn’t work every time. Sometimes they bounce off the tackle and keep going.â€
The Tigers defense is, on the whole, improved from last season.
They’re posting better marks in total defense (334.6 to 344.2 yards per game), rush defense (92.8 to 153.4) and scoring defense (18.8 to 23.8) than they were at this point last year and have only given up 31 points in the second half this season.
But Roof is aware some of Auburn’s upcoming opponents won’t be quite so forgiving of some bad habits.
“We have the tendency to focus on what needs to be fixed a lot more than what we did well,†Roof said. “That’s because if you don’t get it fixed it will keep biting you and cost you a football game. And that’s a message to our defense: We’ve got to get this corrected, or this corrected, because if we don’t, it will come back and cost us dearly.â€

Hey sphincter boy, I checked it out first before posting the thread. Thanks for showing up late to my party. There's no more liquor.

I wish Stevens could get that point across to all of them. Surprising coming from Bates, I have seen him go for more kill shots and miss or have someone bounce off than I care to remember. Don't get me wrong, I love to see the kill shot, but if we didn't get one kill shot and shut another team down then I would be a happy man on Saturday.

Just a thought here...these players aren't making it up on their own to "go for low kill shots". I'm not at practice, so I can't say for sure, but there's a trend these days in teaching tackling like we've seen from our DBs and I don't fucking like it. The fact that Bynes and Stevens recognize it as poor technique is a positive, but I don't hear them saying "that's not the way we've been coached" either. Both Stallings and Dye commented on this a week ago...it's not just an Auburn thing, it's pervasive in college football this "flinging bodies at folks instead of coming under control to make a solid form tackle...good tackling teams are a rare commodity these days.

I would say that a lot of the players do make it up on their own to go for the kill shot. Especially when they think they can get away with it. That is what every kid that plays D wants, the kill shot. It makes them a YouTube sensation overnight. Not saying they get this this way in college, but more than likely starts out in HS ball.
I don't know what the coaches are teaching either. In the big picture it doesn't matter. I would rather stop a team and shut the down w/o any Sports Center Highlights than I would have a film full of highlights and still lose the game b/c of two or three busted plays that could have been stopped by simply wrapping up and taking someone down.

Yes, players will do things they're they're not coached to do, or worse things they're coached not to do. I'm simply going on the body of work by our defense so far, and what I see is a team with poor tackling skills.

Agree 100%

What ever happened to the first guy hitting him, wrapping up, driving backwards, and letting the 2nd guy come in for the strip?
-
Can you not make the "kill shot" by driving your facemask through his chest wrapping up, exploding through the runner and putting him on his back?

I understand everyone's consternation.
Solid tackling/wrapping up is a good thing.
That said...I believe the "big hit" philosophy is paying dividends in the 2nd halves of games, as I've previously explained in some other thread.
Search, motherfucker, use it.

I'm thinking we can make this 4 games in a row the opposing starting QB will have to leave the game early because his vagina hurts.

This guy gets it.
Those receivers start hearing footsteps around mid-third quarter as well.
