Ingram, Newton atop Heisman Predictor
October, 4, 2010
By Chris Low
Talk about spicing up a rivalry.
In the latest Heisman Predictor standings, Alabama's Mark Ingram is No. 1 and Auburn's Cameron Newton No. 2.
That game on Nov. 26 is already shaping up to be a blockbuster matchup in terms of the Western Division race. But can you imagine if both Ingram and Newton are also going head-to-head in the Heisman race?
Newton has come out of nowhere like Ingram did a year ago. But as long as Newton keeps putting up the kind of numbers he has and Auburn keeps winning, he's going to be a major player in the Heisman race ... and should be.
-
You realize that changes every week. Mallett went from not listed to #1 in one week. Don't know where he is now.
I think this poll may be fan based. It sure fluctuates a lot. But, the race does also. Cam is a hot ticket right now.
-
The fisherman shouldn't even be mentioned as a candidate. His yardage came against Duke and the worst defense in the SEC. When he finally faced a decent defense (UF), he didn't get squat.

You are correct, this is a fan based poll but it says alot about what fans of CFB are seeing.

Jesse Palmer didn't have him in his top 5 today. Newton was.

Jesse Palmer is just pissed cuz bama beat the shit out of Florida.
-
While I agree that Ingram shouldn't be in the top 5, you can't hold the Florida game as a reason to not put him in it. For fuck's sake, he didn't touch the ball in the 3rd quarter against the #7 team in the nation. Newton was getting intercepted while throwing to the endzone in the 3rd against LAMO.
And it's pointless anyway. The writers are hell bent on giving it to a QB in the Big Ten. Michigan's qb is the next trophy winner. And he'll get it on a 3 loss team, just so they can say the Heisman didn't go to the best player on the best team.

The talking heads are mentioning him too. I'm proud of that, and happy for Cam. The next 4 weeks will go a long way towards getting him in among the real candidates, or not.

We took 15 offensive snaps in the entire second half.

12 Rushes/47 Yards/3.9 YPC. SQUAT!
-
I'm just glad Newton isn't letting go to his head. His main concern is winning football games, and it should be. And, the man absolutely loves Auburn Fans.
-
He getting paid well enough so he..... wait I mean he likes all the women.

You forgot 2 TD and 3 receptions for 19 yards. I agree with Token that the guy shouldn't be in the top 5 at this point, but to point out the Florida game as the reason why? Not the greatest example. No running back even touched the ball in the 3rd quarter until Richardson got a carry to run out the quarter. Aside from the final few minutes in the game (when we had 2nd teamers in), we ran it 3 times in the 4th quarter.

I chortled.
Don't know if anyone caught it Saturday but after one series where AU settled for a field goal, the first thing Cam did when he hit the sidelines was grabbed a ball and told the coaches he wasn't happy with his footwork and delivery. No telling how successful or otherwise he'll be the rest of the year but whatever happens, you can never say he doesn't put in the work.
-
He got a second chance and he is not going to waste it. I hope he continues what he is doing. How can you not like him? He is saying the right things and he is playing like a first rounder.

Yeah, he def has his head screwed on straight. I'm just glad we have a good QB at last.

This. In 04', I finally had complete confidence in Jason Campbell and went into every single game knowing he had the game to beat anyone. He was accurate, composed and seemed to take off and run at exactly the right spot every time. Regardless of having Caddy and Ronnie, he was the guy that made it all go to me. That one year has literally been the last time in fo-evah that I felt real good about our QB situation. Cam is definitely still a work in progress and his passing will still bring on some face-palm moments, but he's only going to get better.

Campbell was the last QB of this magnitude that I had in mind as well. You know, before him I think I have to go all the way back to Craig. Cam is getting better, we can all see it each and every game. This excites me. Excuse me, I need to go clean up.

I was having this conversation with one of my buddies about Cam and comparing him to Craig. The big difference? I'll take Mike Dyer over The Lizard any day.

Holy cow, Markeith Cooper, right? That was hard on the brain this early in the morning to call that out of the past.
I do agree though, Dyer is still to come into his own but we can all see the light turning on right before our eyes. Although I'm loving some Cam, he still needs some touch up to be better at passing than Craig. I see it coming though, Cam Newtons name at the top of all the accolades.

Even after he came out of the game in the second half, he was running around, keeping the team fired up, yelling at both the O and D, yelling at the crowd, with that beautiful smile on his face.
He didn't NEED to do that - we had a huge lead.
He didn't HAVE to do that - we had a huge lead.
HE DID THAT ANYWAY.
That is HIS team - those guys would do anything he asked. He is the leader that has been sorely lacking for some time. It is great to have a DL or an OL as a team leader - who was gonna argue with them?? - but the best of all possible scenarios is to have your QB be Da Man, both on and off the field. Manning and Brees immediately come to mind when you think of a QB who is the undisputed leader of his team.
i am kinda giddy right now...

Must be Chizik's doings, Gus is all missionary about things like this.

I still say SD was idiotic at best for letting Brees go.

Would Saban still be at Miami if Miami had signed Brees instead of Daunte Culpepper?

I say no because he couldn't control the players like he can in college.

SEC Heisman update
By Chris Low
As we approach the midway point of the season, the two most realistic Heisman Trophy candidates in this conference just happen to play their football in the state of Alabama.
If this keeps up, the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26 could really have some serious stakes.
Here’s the way I would rank the SEC’s Heisman candidates heading into Week 6:
1. Alabama running back Mark Ingram: He didn’t have a big game numbers-wise, but was still instrumental in Alabama taking control in the first half and thumping Florida 31-6. Ingram scored two more touchdowns and has six in three games and is still leading the SEC in rushing at 118.3 yards per game. The Crimson Tide take on South Carolina this weekend, and it was the Gamecocks Ingram lit up for a Bryant-Denny Stadium-record 246 yards last season to really set his Heisman campaign into motion.
2. Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton: He took it easy on the running last week against Louisiana-Monroe, but threw three touchdown passes in the Tigers’ 52-3 rout to raise his SEC-leading total to 12. Counting his five rushing touchdowns, Newton has accounted for 17 in five games. He’s on track to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards this season. Not even Tim Tebow did that at Florida.
3. LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson: It was a pretty quiet game for Peterson against Tennessee. He did return a punt 26 yards, and there remains talk about him playing some on offense. The Tigers could sure use the help. Big games are upcoming against Florida and Auburn. If Peterson finds the end zone in those games either by returning a kick or interception or doing it on offense, then he’s right back in the race. He’s too explosive of an athlete to count out and the best cornerback in the country.
4. Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett: The three interceptions against Alabama two weeks ago will linger in the voters’ minds, but not nearly as much if Mallett comes back strong and leads the Hogs to a 10-win season or better. He’ll get some good national exposure this week against Texas A&M and still has outstanding overall numbers with 1,438 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in four games. He probably needs a signature win (maybe against Auburn) where he lights it up and the Hogs win if he’s going to climb back into the top tier of candidates.

The overall leader at this point in the season should be Robinson of Meeechegan, hands down.
Passing: 67/96 1008 yards 7 TD's and 1 Int. 179.97 Rating
Rushing: 98 att. 930 yards 8 TD's 181 yards per game
Not that I think he'll do it, but he's on track for 2000 passing and 2000 rushing yards and 30+ TD's. This would fall into the category of SICK numbers.

You can quote me on this. Robinson will be injured if Rich Rod keeps running him at the pace he currently is.

That's why I just don't think he'll keep that pace up. He's not big enough to take that kind of pounding and he's already gotten nicked up once. But, he's been pretty damn impressive so far.

And this is why I am going to modify picks for this week. I'm gonna say the Spartans get it done because Shoelace gets hurt.

South Carolina and Alshon Jeffrey just threw Ingram into the mud and stepped on his face with a Hobnail Boot.
Maybe Ingram should grow out his hair and tie it up in Pigtails like Julio (I didn't think a Cave Man could look like a woman, but Julio amazingly pulled it off)...maybe that'll get him back in the race.

No wonder Cam isn't fairing so hot on the online poll.
From that link, in the upper right corner, you can mouse over the list to vote on a candidate. Cam is missing from that list, while everyone else is present.

We have to get this fixed. Didn't last year they start counting the fan poll as a part of the voting? I'm thinking it was only a small percentage but it was counted.
