What do you think will be Fannin's role in this offense from here forward? I read some quotes from The Chin this morning about how Fannin will still contribute in a lot of ways....blah blah...corchspeak....blah blah...more corchspeak. Bottom line is if this staff thinks you're a liability, you will sit. However, when you look at his stats from 2009, you see the guy put up decent numbers from that position.
42 receptions for 413 yards and 3 TD's.
Fannin is capable and a freak of an athlete. It's obvious the whole #1 running back thing didn't work out and I doubt seriously they have any confidence in him at that position any more. However, keep in mind that we're an injury away from him being just that. Question for you gurus. Who has been handling his old position this year? Is it Smith or is Litzunkrotchen running from there? Because of the lack of spreading the ball around this year until Saturday night, it's hard to tell.
For me, with his production last year, I think the guy has proven he can be a valuable asset from that H-back position and I would think they need to get him back there asap. He's too good an athlete not to be on the field. Has anyone just lost confidence in his ability to hold on to the ball and say we just move on? What say you?

I think his roll will be a Sister Shubert's. Can't beat those little nuggets of deliciousness.
Are you sure you passed 9th Grade English?

A roll is a roll...and a toll is a toll. If you don't pay the toll, we can't eat any rolls.
I did pass 9th grade Engrish, thank you very much. Stoll the final exam a week before the test.

Changing your fuckup after it's caught is week sauce.

Your talking about a guy who when he was in 9th grade, they still used slate boards and played basketball through a fruit basket. 9th grade was actually a Senior in those days, and school was a privilege to get out of farm work.

Leeving it up there looks bad for the X. Yes, I admit it. I modified

Well, I certainly think Fannin is a weapon for the offense he just drops his rifle in the mud too much. I am all for him to stay at H-Back. He can tear it up in the passing game. I think both Smith and Lutz are being used for the H-Back position currently.
-
I like him in the role of David Palmer to Cam Newton's Jack bauer.

I know they were running true freshman Shaun Kitchens there in camp (This guy will be a big time beast, IMO) but I think it's safe to say that if we haven't seen any of these freshmen on the field to this point, they will redshirt.
-
I like Mario, but Lutz seems to be finally getting the position down to a science. His blocking is better and he has GREAT hands. I think I would rather have the sure 10 - 15 yard reception, rather than take the chance. I'm sure MF will have some good touches, but he just seems like a stallion that can run like hell but can't be ridden.
I don't know if it was coaching that failed him, or he just could not make the move to ball carrier. And I'm sure the always banged up shoulder does not help. So maybe getting him the ball in space through the air is what he is most comfortable with.

I agree, there is a lot of talent at Freshman which will probably be saved for another year of eligibility. What is the rule of redshirting. A player could play in the first 3 games but if not played after that, he can be considered a redshirt?

If you play one down you cannot redshirt.

I guess there will be no redshirting Trovon Reed then.

Unless it becomes a "medical" redshirt. But that would have to be submitted to the NCAA for approval. The beloved Daniel Cobb was allowed to lead us into battle for an extra year due to that.

Seems like we have this discussion every year, where the fuck did that rumor start. You think it is people confusing it with the medical redshirt?

I know this sounds harsh, but personally, it wouldn't bother me to see Mario not get another carry. I just don't think he is one of Auburn's better play makers with the ball in his hands. We should have a lot more talent to get the ball to than him. IMO.
I like the kid, but it is what it is.

No question the guy is capable. His stats from last year prove it and he didn't have issues with teh butterfingers. It looks like RB is just a mental block for him. No way he can't be thinking about securing the ball on his carries but apparently....

^^THIS^^
I lost it for him last year in the UGA game. He just hasn't and I don't believe will live up to the hype that he came in with. I like the kid and wish him the best, but it wouldn't bother me either to see him not get another carry.
This is just rumor and message board fodder, but I have read that his shoulder is shot to hell and back and it has been for a couple of years now.

Mario's role from here......
should be keeping the gatorade fresh. Sorry, but the sumbeech is gonna cost us a game eventually with the fumble-itis.
-
Dax??? You sir, are dead to me.
It didn't seem fair to mention Cobb and not Dax.......
Each gets the same ugly response...
Dax Dallenbach (2*LS) - one of the recipents of the famous Tubberville longsnaper scholarships, no longer with the team and never played for Auburn, it was never confirmed but it appeared he was dismissed from the team for a series of off field events last summer along with Savage, Thompson, and Jemison.

Seriously guys? I find this a little bit ridiculous. Yes, I agree he should not be handed the ball as a RB, but he is definitely a play-maker we need on the field.
I honestly think he will win a game for us this year and a lot of you guys will be eating crow.

His fumbling is not limited to the point of hand off. He seems to do it at any given time.

However, it won't change the fact that I will be producing diamonds of my own every time he touches the ball. He needs to be in the slot a minimum of 15 plays a game.

So we should all send you a little piece of coal before each game?

While I would normally say Touche.
Mine was actually tongue in cheek, I still like Mario and I hope we continue to play him as an H-back. I do not like him at RB though. I did pull his shirt down, but that is because, I think it is jinxing him. Hell I own one of the shirts myself.

Yes, probably. I'm just trying to keep a streak intact.

Yes...just in case Mario lines up at the RB spot.

Mario Fannin is no Clifford Franklin
-
Well, I hate to tell you guys but I can almost guarantee you that Mario will get his game time. The guy is a nice weapon to have catching the ball on wheel routes and out in the flats.
-
From the outside looking in, keep him off the field. It should be the Dyer and Newton show from here on out.
-
I'd be willing to bet Fannin, Dyer and Smith will all three be toting the football around all week this week because all three fumbled.
-

Great point. Non conference foe you should handle with relative ease...I know that's a big assumption..but...
If we do have the game in hand, that's exactly what should happen. Pound Fannin and Smith all day and let them get some confidence. I'm not a big fan of Mario at RB any more but you can't overlook the fact that we aren't exactly rolling 5 deep at that position...unlike some teams. There may come a time, sooner than you think, that Fannin is forced back into the #1 ROLE. O-Mac is not an every down back, unless you want him broken in half by halftime.

Since Mario did not get another touch Saturday night, you have to wonder if CGC has had enough. I decided to look up Mario's stats since he has been playing back in 2007, noting all his touches, not just rushes, because he has been a good RB at catching passes:
2007 4 fumbles (led team), 84 rushes 5 TDs, 18 Rec. 2 TD, 19 KR 0 TD
2008 1 fumble, 54 rushes 1 TD, 20 rec. 2 TD, 11 KR 0 TD
2009 3 fumbles (tied for third…Ben Tate was second with 4 fumbles on 263 rushes and 20 rec) 34 rushes 0 TD, 42 rec. 3 TD, 14 KR 0 TD, 1 PR 0 TD
2010 2 fumbles (leading team), 9 rushes 0 TD, 6 rec. 0 TD
So, Mario has led the team in fumbles in a year that he was not even the starter, but was also the year of his most carries. He was one fumble less than Ben Tate in 2009, though Ben carried the ball nearly 8 times more than Mario did (Todd led the team with 8 fumbles that year). This year he is already leading the team though he has significant less carries than Newton, Dye, and McCalebb. It is interesting to see his number of carries have decreased quite a bit each year since his first year. I honestly thought he had more fumbles than that, and to hear many other AU fans talk, I would venture to say that most of his fumbles have probably happened at critical times (like Saturday night), which makes it more memorable to fans and coaches. Even then, compared to the other RBs, for the most part the stats do support the popular notion that he has had a problem hanging on to the ball with the exception of 2009 when he was #4 in number of carries behind Tate, Lester, and Burns.
It sucks, because Mario is one of those guys that can create big plays, especially when he swings out in the flat. Though I remember his fumbles, I also remember him making up for them sometimes by taking a short pass and turning it into a huge gain. Yet, three of his four years, his fumble to carry ratio is not exactly something the will get him on the good side of the pro scouts and apparently not sitting well with CGC. I don't know what an acceptable ration would be, but with the weapons we have now, is it too late for him even if he was to improve that aspect of his game?
-
According to Ranger's stats, Mario has 10 fumbles from approx 180 carries. A fumble every 18 carries @ 230 lbs. Good grief........thats not good. Dyer has 1 fumble from 62 carries. Dyer's fumble was almost unavoidable considering he was thrown into the air for a 180. It seems that if an opposing player stomps their foot at Fannin, the ball hits the ground instantaneously....just saying.
Also, as Ranger eluded to, Fannin's fumbles seem to happen at critical times.
-
MF did not get any touches because Cam kept the ball. MF was in there, but the DE was attacking the RB, so Cam kept it. Probably a good thing, but the coaches did not keep the ball from him.

No, but after the fumble Cam may have been thinking the same thing. Something is wrong with Fannins shoulder and if you guys watch the replay, you can see he had the ball in his left arm and was hit in the left shoulder. So I guess if Cam can throw the ball to Fannin on the left side of the field we should be ok. :)
-
I don't care if he has fumblitis.
I don't care if he has a bum shoulder.
I don't care if he has nubs for fingers.
He shouldn't be touching the ball very often anymore. Maybe a few pass plays. He also should be taught to run in a straight line and then just fall down.
Whatever the reason, the guy has trouble holding onto the football and staying healthy. Sorry, Mario. Maybe you should have trained for track and field.
-
Just an FYI...I got those stats straight from the AU Athletics site. They don't put the fumble stats front and center, so I had to dig around a little for them. For some reason they did not have the individual fumble totals for the 2008 season or at least I did not find them, so I had to look at the game by game stats to get the individual totals for that year.
I would agree that a fumble for every 18 carries does not sound like a ratio that any coach would be happy with. Coach Chizik referred to Fannin's ball protection problems a couple of times last year, so it would not surprise me that CGC finally had enough after the fumble Saturday night and decided that he three guys in the backfield that is getting good yardage and protecting the ball for the most part. I only recall seeing Mario in the game one more time after that, on a fake reverse, but he might have been in more than that.
If his shoulder is bothering him enough that he can't hold on to the ball, then he does not need to be in the game period. He is a RB for crying out loud, so I would think CGC would not let him touch the ball, especially since he has problems when he is healthy, if he was not 100%.
-

At a certain point, they'll deem him not worth the risks based on the other talent they have...his playing days are numbered, if not already passed.

Well, if I was a coach, I would be thinking about the same. I would limit his touches if I have someone to put in place but I highly doubt we will see the end of Mario. The game this Saturday could tell us a lot I would think by who is played and played early.
