Like I said, God I'm awesome, Welcome to AWK Avenue...we don't need no stinkin' skreets.
Hey everyone.
We have just learned that two of the Tigers’ remaining positional quandaries have been settled.
Coach Gene Chizik said Barrett Trotter has earned the No. 2 quarterback job. The sophomore leapfrogged fifth-year senior Neil Caudle on the depth chart. Redshirt freshman Clint Moseley also was in the mix.
So what happens now with Caudle and Moseley?
“Both of those guys can go in there and do the job,†Chizik said. “(Caudle) is what this place is all about. We have a lot of trust in him. Clint Moseley is a young man who has shown a lot of strides. All four quarterbacks, our plan right now, is to take all four of them†on the road.
So what about right tackle? Glad you asked.
A.J. Greene, a junior, has been named starter at right tackle. He battled with John Sullen and Brandon Mosley for the job. He was one of the team’s more low-profile players during spring drills, but a summer of introspection prompted significant progress.
More to come.

The pornstache and dreads must have done the trick.

Worst coaching decision ever!!!!!!! Does Cizik even know what shape a football is? These clowns need to go. Caudle is clearly the better of the remaining QB's. AJ Greene...really.
Just in case you guys missed Kaos and Greasy:bar:

Sarcasm.
I am perfectly happy wit these desicions. just wanted some negativity for old times sake

I'll throw in negativity - I don't like the AJ Greene to right tackle move.
It just doesn't "feel" correct. Like something is off. Like, we recruited two four star junior college studs to compete for right tackle because we didn't have anyone to play that position. Like, those two studs couldn't get it done, so we threw in the scrub that at least knows the offense. Bad vibes, man.
And we need a :Kaos: emoticon.

I've been pushing to get this made into one since it made it's debut on the board.

AJ Green to Right Tackle was a move that should've been made....as was Barrett Trotter as the 2nd String QB.
Roz hasn't been 100% since he arrived.
Mosley is learning the position.
Sullen is also just learning the position and he got slightly injured in the last scrimmage.
Roz is now working at Left Tackle behind Z.
Mosley will continue learning the RT position behind Green.
Sullen, I'm guessing, will move back to Guard behind Isom and/or Berry.
Caudle is the new 4* placekick holder.
Trotter is a better QB than Caudle, he's more mobile and he doesn't aim at the defenders. I wouldn't have minded seeing Clint Mosley as the backup QB.
-
Damn. I thought Caudle looked sharper than Cam Newton in yalls A-Day game, for that matter. Not like my opinion counts much, but I was pretty impressed.

Trotter was as good or better than Caudle at A-Day. JMO... i think Cam is going to be in good shape as the starter. Shit, he's barely been allowed to run live yet.

Personally, I think Cam was already figured to be the starter before A-day...I think the reason you say the above was designed that way because they were looking for a number 2.
I thought Trotter looked the best of the 3. Cam hardly threw the ball.

I thought Caudle looked more poised and consistent. But I loved how Trotter goes for the throat. His first inclination is the go for the big play and then drop back down to the shorter routes. That is how you stick the knife in and twist it a little. However, I didn't think he would be as consistent as Caudle this year. Apparently the coaches like the kill shot too. Also, Caudle may just be cruising his last year knowing that he probably won't see the field after Cam won the job. Whatever the reason, I am not as terrified as years before about the QB position.

I think you're right about Cam. I figured they knew he would be starter when his signed. As for Trotter, I like this kid and I do think that if Cam wouldn't have come to Auburn, he would be the starter. This guy is a gamer and reminds me a lot of Tim Tebow in his leadership as a hard nosed field general. This kid has teh brains and the skillz.

That's certainly one way of looking at it, but what I see as significant is that we have these "two four star junior college studs" to add some much needed depth. Greene has apparently been improving dramatically from everything I've read over the last month. Now we have an experienced OL with some studs behind them to back them up. I see that as a good thing.
When you have a new QB, it's beneficial to have an experienced OL to back him up.

It still concerns me that we picked up 2 JC t'fers in Gayden and Mosely and neigher could win the job from a Jr. that's been at Auburn and has, to date, shown very little. I'm thrilled the light finally came on for Greene, but you don't bring in JCs if you don't expect them to be your starters.

Not sure I agree with that statement. I would contend that OL is one of the hardest position for a JC guy to come into and beat out someone who has been in the system longer.

Exactly. On top of that, OL is a much more fluid position than say, QB. It's not like those guys won't be seeing the field at all. Read: DEPTH.

Normally I would agree 100%. In this case; however, one of the two JC guys has been hurt since the spring game. Also, the other JC guy was TE that came in undersized for the Tackle position, and is still learning the position to boot. I somehow expect to see Gayden slowly brought along now at the other Tackle spot to be ready for next season, and Sullen and Mosely backing up the Tackle and Guard spots.
-
Last Saturday, Greene sure looked the part. He was getting after it in all the drills. He's beefed up finally above 290. I imagine he's just been the most consistent of the guys pushing for that spot.
-

Which takes me back to the premise that you don't bring in JC guys unless you feel it's your only option. You don't bring in JCs to compete, you bring them in with the idea they are the starter at the position you bring them in for...to fill an immediate need. You bring in Fr. to coach and cultivate for future needs, not JC Jr's.
Look, it's not a major worry, just one of those things that makes me wonder what's up. May be Greene just decided to get his ass in gear, don't know, but that's the word on da skreets.
OL in this system isn't rocket science. The RT is asked to do just a few things really. In the run game he usually double teams with the RG, or is blocking down on the 3 technique, or a LB, or zoning...all standard blocks. That's not so much a scheme learning curve as technique learning curve. Leave us not forget too, that these JCs were in for spring practice, and that Greene didn't get but one year under this system, and did so as a back up...so there's not that much of an experience advantage for Greene. And pass pro...I don't know exactly how Malzahn does his, but from what I've seen on film, the RT is usually one on one with the DE, but also often has help in the way of a back chipping with him. So, what it comes down to in my estimation, is a guy that was on campus that they originally didn't think should be the #1, has beat out 2 JCs that they brought in to take the job. Why? Like I said, don't know...and maybe not a big deal...but it's a concern in my eyes.

This...no soooo negative...but this.

Wrong....or hopefully wrong...not on the OL. You don't rotate in OL like you do DL to give them breathers. It's not fluid. If it's fluid, it means you're unsettled, and that's not good on OL. The OL has to have chemistry, and the QB has to trust them. If you have a settled OL, then the starters play 90%+ of the meaningful snaps. You may, for some odd reason or another (maybe you got a guy that's got a nagging little injury, or isn't grading out as well as he should) sub once in a while, but by and large, the OL remains fixed, and the starters play as long as the game is still at issue and your starting QB is in. Depth on the OL means little...when you have to start getting in to your depth chart on the OL, it generally means playing inexperienced guys due to injury, or like last year, due to player suspension.
-
The one thing I will say about Malzahns offense, he doesn't like doing too many subs, especially on any certain possession, except for the skill players if need be.
-

I get where you're at, but I think it's also a product of a young man growing up and getting his priorities in order. Sounds like he's had the physical talent, but maybe he just needed to get focused. Bringing in two JC's that will basically ensure your playing time demise, will do that. Could just be that he's maturing.

We can hope that's it. I do! I really really do, but I also look at the depth chart on the link below, and see his name listed nowhere in 15 OLs. 15...that's 3 deep as of some 3 weeks ago, and his name wasn't even in the mix...ANYWHERE! I'm not Kaos, or Greasyfuckstick...but I know something fishy when I see it. Chad "Muthafuckin WHO?" Slade was listed on the RT depth chart, but not Greene.

Again, Mosely is learning a new position just as Greene has switched positions in his career. They've been working Mosely behind Ziemba so they may feel he's more suited for that side. As many have said, Gayden has battled injuries since he got here. I hadn't heard that, but if that's the case, someone else winning the job makes sense. And it just may be that while he's a mountain of a man and all that in JC, he may not be all that and a bag of chips against SEC competition.
The thing is with Greene, whether he turns out to be a stud at the position or not, I don't think we're really taking into account how this guy has transformed himself. He was recruited as a DE and labored in that position for a while and suffering through injuries. He was redshirted in 07'and didn't play at all in 08'. They moved him to the offensive line, getting in 2 games in 09'; however, if memory serves me, he's never been above that 270-280 range. Now, the guy has used the off season to beef himself up and dedicate himself to winning the position from all accounts I've read. I don't know if Greene will do squat once the season starts but he's sure impressed the staff enough to name him the starter.

This. However, JR feel's somethin's fishy. We've all seen when someone knows, and by God, they just KNOW! ....eh hem.
Just messin' JR. Who's to say. Just from what I've seen though, Greene looks the part, and has definitely seemed to have earned it in practice. I'm cool with it, and it doesn't equate to issues with other players just because either.

LTs...if they're good, often "wait their turn" as RTs. Just sayin'. And it's not rocket science. Everybody knew Mosley was recruited as an OL, not a TE. McCain had come to AU as a TE. The duties of a blocking TE and RT are very similar.

Injuries are a legit issue. Sullen is injured now too. So that could be it. However, if they brought them in thinking they were "it" and are not, that means they missed on not one, but two JCs. That's not good.

Sometimes these "moves" are made not because the guy took the position, but because the others ahead of them lost it, or can't perform due to injury. Big difference.

Fishy might not be the best word. Not suggesting anything is being hidden or whatever...just that "it is what it is, ah'ight". It appears our coaching staff misjudged 2 JC's and now have roster spots being taken by guys who have limited time at AU to develope, shouldn't need the time to develople like a Fr., and could be being taken by younger guys with more time to contribute. Like I've said over and over, you don't bring in JC guys to develpe them, or to "compete for a job".

I think you're just reading too much into it. I don't think Greene winning the position has squat to do with the coaches missing on the two transfers. Just sayin.. Maybe you're just very thirsty for some debate on a slow Friday.
-

Um. No.
But I agree with every thing else you have said. Something is kind of fishy. Hopefully Green has just "matured" and it is not that he won because everyone else is not really that good...
-
I'm not getting the part about bringing JC guys in to compete for a job. I know that ideally, you want them to step in if they're good enough. But Auburn, along with virtually every D1 college re-signs players who had to go the JUCO route and they have to come in and prove it at this level like everyone else. Sometimes, it turns out they had no idea that a freshman recruit is as good as he is and he's ready to hit the field immediately. I promise that 2* Chad Slade (Whom I joined in the point and laugh-fest over) is anything but what I thought. Huge, aggressive kid who will break the rotation at some point in his career....IMO. Same with unrated Tunde Fariyike. 6'2" 330. He was running 2nd team center Saturday. 3* Shaun Kitchens was another that most people wondered why we offered. He WILL be in the rotation this year. Freakin' beast at the WR position.
I just don't see where it's a bad thing or even questionable that a guy literally transformed himself and made the decision to go out there and win a job...over an injured player.
-

Thanks.
I meant on the RT and TE...assuming they're playing in a system where the TE is playing close to the T (which they don't in Malzahn's)...but like in the I for instance...they either are often double teaming the same guy, or having to block LBs in space. I know they're not the same position, and I know that being the pin on a double team is different from being the post, but they do have to understand each other's job's in some offenses, and in some cases in offenses where they don't use the TE to catch the ball, they convert a small tackle to play there. Didn't mean to suggest they are the same postion with the exact same duties, but the transition isn't completely foriegn for a guy that's been a BLOCKING TE.
Oh, and other's that want to spin this up as a postivie...War Eagle has played the game at a high level. Think I'm just being argumentative now?
-
Think I'm just being argumentative now?
Maybe just a tad. It's your opinion, and you're certainly entitled to that. I just don't agree that has anything to do with being fishy. I just think the kid worked his tail off, and after maturing over the course of several years and several injuries, understood if he didn't make it happen this year, he wasn't going to.
I think the kid deserves cred. Not just an assumption that he only got it because the other to JC transfers might be flops, which doesn't say much for what you think about them either. Someone's going to win the position, and someone, or others are going to NOT get the postion. Not sure how that translates to an automatic assumtion of misses on the recruting front.
-

Re-signing a guy you recruited and bringing in Juco's from nowhere is different. Coaches and players will tell you that you don't bring in Juco's to compete with guys you already have on campus that have a legit shot at winning the job...you can destroy team chemistry when you bring a guy in off the street to compete against a guy that's been there paying his dues. Players know who can play and who can't and when you don't have a guy at a position...a guy with a legit shot to play except for the fact that there's nobody with any real SEC talent...then it's ok to bring in a guy to fill the NEED. If AJ Greene had really thought the RT job was his, and all his teammates had felt that way...then bringing in the Jucos might have messed things up...as it was, everybody under the sun knew we didn't have a RT on campus that was "entitled to the job" in the sense that he'd paid his dues, AND shown he had the talent. Sullen had a little...but he's been questionable from day one. It's just a thing. Jucos can help you when you need them, but you can destroy a program if you try to rely on them.
-

I'm going to stick with my suspicions, and take heart in the fact that a guy that's played the game understands what I'm getting at and shares my concerns.
-
That's been my thing all along. "Something's fishy" doesn't pass the smell test. A.J. Greene is not even close to the same player he was in years past. Is he all world? Probably not or there wouldn't even be competition for the job. But, he's damn sure impressed Gus Malzahn enough to trust him with the RT position in his offense.
Chris Todd thinks your "arguments" don't pass the smell test either.

Haha. Okay. Kind of weak, but I hear ya. I played. I think some others here have played too. This isn't a knock on WE!!!, but I'm not thinking of him in terms of playing at a high level and all might master of team chemistry and psycology. No offense to him.
If you want to cling to that though, then okay. I just think you're letting your imagination run a little wild here. Keep up the good fight, sir.

Hmmm, you think Chris Todd's arrival on campus doesn't bolster my "team chemistry" argument? Were you sleeping or drunk through the 2008 season?

....and were you drunk during 2009, when the decision to start Todd over Burns, and subsequent reactions from the same players became a positive?
There also might have been one or five hundred different things to blame team chemistry on that year (2008).
C'mon man.

It's just my opinion is all. It's strange. I played too....not in college. I coach too...not in college. WE played college ball. But regardless...I had my opinion on the matter before he chimed in, and I'll stay with it. It is just an opinion, not a fight to convince you or anyone else, even though you're wrong :), or at the very least simply looking for a postive spin on what appears to be a less than ideal situation. Here's hoping Greene is a monster at RT. ....and were you drunk during 2009, when the decision to start Todd over Burns, and subsequent reactions from the same players became a positive?

C'mon man.
That was after Burns had proved he wasn't the guy and had done so in games AFTER taking over for Todd, after a failed season, after a coaching change...after lots of changes...his initial arrival on campus wasn't welcome by the players because at the time they felt is was Kodi's job. And I suspect, no, I KNOW that, along with many other things factored in heavily to 2008. In 2009 the job was opened to all comers...Todd won it as opposed to being brought in to compete with a guy that everyone thought had waited his turn for it.
YOU come on if you think they're the same thing!

I think my positive spin, as you call it, might be simply based more on common sense, rather than creating a divide where there probably isn't one. That's where we differ. I don't understand where you create a chemistry issue out of a kid that worked his ass off to simply win a position on a football team. I don't think the JUCO or other deals have anything to do with any of this.
I think it became an issue because of losing, and coaches losing control. I think there was an overall lack of confidence, and that lead to the bad chemistry. Not simply because of Todd vs. Kodi Burns. I won't deny there was some tension, but at that point, neither one was doing a bang up job to earn the position, and the coaches leading up to literally even past the first introduction of the starting lineups before letting a starter run onto the field, was the worst part. Bad all around.
This current situation, that you're trying to manufacture, is NOTHING like what you're making it out to be. Certainly nothing like the 2008 debacle.

Hmmm, you think Chris Todd's arrival on campus doesn't bolster my "team chemistry" argument? Were you sleeping or drunk through the 2008 season?
Hmmm...does nothing for it at all. I would have to ask the same sleeping or drunk question of you if you think Chris Todd and team chemistry because of him had anything to do with 08'. 08' was about Tommy Tuberville going full on tard with his Franklin experiment. It was about Tony Franklin having all of our linemen drop weight and having guys like Lee Ziemba playing at 270 pounds. It was about Tuberville's marriage going south and him not having any interest in corching. It was about the BBQ boys. It was about firing your offensive coordinator in mid season. It was about recruiting a QB, Kodi Burns, who had no business, let alone the ability to play QB in this league.
Granted, the team chemistry theory could be a factor if the only issue on the ball club was handing the reigns to a JC transfer at a high profile position like QB or RB. However, I doubt there's one soul on the entire squad that gives a shit about a long time team mate beating out a JC transfer for a spot on the O-line.

I'm not saying there is a divide or chemistry issue. I'm saying that these Jucos were brought in for the right reasons (namely nobody that was qualified for the job), and suddenly AJ Greene pops up out of nowhere...as of 3 weeks ago not even on the depth chart...to winning the job. It's not a knock on Greene per se, it's a knock on the guys who were brought in for the job, and couldn't keep the job despite the fact they werr basically given the job. To the end that it might have made AJ Greene step up...I agree somewhat, but still think he "won it" by default. All the signs point to that from what I see.

I didn't suggest it caused the 2008 fiasco...it was part of it...and it was there. It completely validates my argument, despite the other issues, and despite what eventually transpired at the QB position. At the time, bringing Todd in caused problems on the team.

snaggle...chopper...
The Todd thing, the whole 2008 thing is irrelevant now. Sorry I argued it.
As for Greene, I hope for the best...it's simply a bit worrisome that these other guys who were brought in didn't manage to keep the job that was basically handed to them. Nothing sinister about it all...just concerning AT THIS POINT. Nothing more. Not going all Kaos on you...just some observations and concerns, that others share, and you don't. Hopefully not a big deal.

Again, I completely disagree. In my opinion, the TE has more of the same skill set block as a guard. Double teams and sealing off a LB in the runs. In most passing plays, the TE is going out on a route.
As for the OT, if it's a running play, depending on the defense, they are typically head up with the DE. And during a pass play, they 9 times out of 10 go directly 1-1 against a fast DE who is either trying to get around the end and rush the passer, bull rush the OT and rush the passer, or fake outside and rush the passer...either way, they are typically on their own unless the DE shades inside or takes an inside route.
Either way, these positions blocking techniques are no way the same.

So you're saying A.J. Greene will be a consensus All-SEC tackle? Sweeeet.

I think it's very possible that there is a 2a, 2b situation at both QB and RT behind Newton and Greene with Trotter/Caudle and Gayden/Mosely.
I recall #2's being passed over for the next guy during a game on many occaisions when someone gets nicked up, cramps etc. for whatever reason including at QB.
This staff is playing it's best and maybe Greene's familiarity with what is expected on every down gives Grimes a certain level of comfort, the other four starters as well.
I thought Chaz Ramsey and Tyronne Green did a nice job as a guard tandem during their time at AU even though Green got tossed around back and forth on defense before he found his place and actually did a very good job especially on sweeps and cut-backs. Hopefully that kind of indecision which leads to stunting a kid's progression is a thing of the past.

I think you may be on to something to something here jmar.

Ooorrr...maybe Greene is kicking everyone's ass in practice and scrimmages.
Just sayin'....

I'll defer to you then. At any rate, it's not a massively great transition. Andrew McCain did it nicely.

"Andrew McCain did it nicely." A TE/DE at Pell City High
Another guy that was brought in by Tubs that was seen more as defensive help, labored on that side of the ball one season at DT, was brought in on big packages at TE the following season and then finally settled at OT before opening game his last year. That's what I'm talking about. All of the shuffling!

Andrew McCain was a DE at Briarwood HS, he dabbled in playing TE...decent hands. Auburn recruited him as a TE, because he had decent hands and had good size, but he was third string TE behind my cousin and the Dial kid that went to SPuat. His first year on campus, he had no clue about what position he'd play....DE, DT (he would've had to grow into that), TE (good blocking TE). When he officially went over to the offensive side, I said that he'd be a better Tackle than a TE, just put some good weight on him.
