Headlinin': Raider QB shocked (shocked!) that Leach ignored the D
By Matt Hinton
Making the morning rounds.
• I dunno, "throw to the open receiver" seemed to be working pretty well. Texas Tech quarterback Steven Sheffield opened up on his former coach during last week's Big 12 media days, calling Mike Leach's exit "a blessing in disguise" after a few months with the Raiders' new staff under Tommy Tuberville. Longtime Leach watchers will be stunned to learn the celebrated spread passing whiz completely ignored the defense ("they were treated like the step-child"), misled players about permissible contact with agents, was "behind the curve" on conditioning, never mentioned winning the Big 12 as a goal ("Championships were not talked about in the Leach Era. It was win one game a week.") 'and even failed to drill his record-smashing quarterbacks in basic footwork and progression ("NFL scouts look at that stuff. They look at your first step being straight back and not false-stepping. That's stuff we were never coached up on."). Yes, now that the most successful coach in school history is finally out of the picture, things will really take off. [Omaha World Herald]

I have no doubt that TT fans are about to get better on defense but look for their offense to drop off as well.
-
If Tubs can keep his hands of the offense though, and leave it to the guy from Troy they should be ok. But, every Auburn fan knows that historically that has not happened with Tubs in charge. We'll see how much he has learned from experience. Another thing that I'm thinking is, you know it might just be an extra blessing in disguise for T.Tech. You see, since Leach ignored the D so much, Tubs will have to really get in the grind working with the D. This would leave the O more in the hands in the OC. Just a theory.
-
Interesting fact: Texas Tech currently has 4 RB's and 2 WR's committed.
Texas Tech fans are already getting worried about that.

Kinda my thoughts too. We'll see though.

Yep, that is a big IF. We at Auburn are very skeptical but seeing how he is defensive minded guy and the T.Tech D is non-existent, don't you think he has his hands full getting the D to where he wants it. Old Tubs must be a good salesman though, he got another guy out of Troy that runs a version of the spread.

He actually hired another Tony Franklin guy. Not a version of the spread, THE version he mangled so badly. However, in this case, it's the same system they've been running at TT under Leach, so at least there won't be any "he has to have time to reruit to the offense" excuses. It will be readily apparent about game 1 whether Tubs has changed his stripes or not.

Thats what I should of said; another T Franklin guy. Tubs could sell an empty glass to a thirsty man it seems. You are right about results, we/they should be able tell pretty quick if this thing is gonna gel.

I haven't been keeping up with them, but yeah, I bet they don't. If I were to see that as a fan, I would immediately think they are loading up for a ground attack.

This would be a culture shock for Tech fans. Maybe someone should go over to a Tech board and investigate what the Red Raiders have to say about it.

Overall most TT fans are pleased with Tubs as the choice for HC. As pleased as they can be without having played a game.

Well. Strictly from a defensive standpoint, You gotta have an offense that can slow the game down when you need to. If you get out there and pass up and down the field too quickly, your defense will be exhausted. So I think Tubs wants to keep the quick strike offense, but supplement it with some heavy hitting when he needs it.

And later you find out that the man did not qualify for the glass that year, tried it again next year.

Speakin' of qualifying....looks like there'll be 6 or 7 players from Texas Tech's recent class that isn't going to qualify....Mmmmm, that sounds like a great recipe for disaster. Just keep bringing in 18 player classes, there will never be a drop off in talent....I sure hope no one gets injured.

Sounds familiar.....glad we don't have that kind of attrition anymore. At least thus far. Its a nice change.
