Any Questions Boys?
« on: May 10, 2010, 12:26:08 PM »

Now see here! We are gonna employ the forward pass this season but we are gonna be less gimicky while moving at a faster pace see. We're gonna have more giddy-up than the other club. We're gonna hit 'em hard where it counts and then we're gonna do it again. If the other chaps are clutching their privates we hit 'em with the ol forward pass. That should catch 'em off guard and allow us to out score 'em see. And when the clock expires you will be saluted by family, friends and even your best girl. It's win win win. Now get there and give it your best.

OK, this is your basic Statue of Liberty play with one little twist: you throw the ball to me.

Knute Rockne called it the forward pass.

You can keep a wooden stake in your trunk
On the off-chance that the fairy tales ain't bunk
And Imma keep a bottle of that funk
To get motel parking lot, balcony crunk.

And youth football is evolving into a no huddle, spread, zone read type of game which will have a trickle effect on how the game is taught, played and understood.

Agreed, but it's all cyclical.  Our B team last year was the first to run a traditional I formation offense in the last 5 years.  They only had one game all year where the opposing team was within 2 touchdowns at halftime, and they still won by 28 points.  We are 2 months away from sign-ups and we already have 7 out of 10 coaches saying they are going back to the basic power I offense and dropping the spread.

Must haves:

Pretty fair talent
in great shape
and commited to it

Larger programs with numbers will run it moreso and yes I agree it is cyclical. But I do not see it being phased out or becoming obsolete as others have said because it is a multiple scheme designed to "spread" the opponent thin while wearing them down and I believe it can be stopped in parts but not totally defended. Ball control is not a concern of no huddle proponents as much as it is with run formation offenses. You will get no argument from me about great defense winning championships, I simply think the "spread" stops itself more than it is actually stopped.

I happen to think that Malzahn ran more gimmicks to counter the lack of foot speed overall along with the less than dazzling receiver corps which has made dramatic improvement but still without a definite deep threat(s) he desires. I think a guy who can run some reverses and an A-one possession receiver were our best chances aside from Ben Tate and Auburn is still far from reaching Malzahn's expectations of what he envisions as a polished product.

Buddy of mine coaches at Vestavia Hills HS, where he and I went.  Coach Anderson has never gotten away from the I formation.  Only now, it's something other teams only see once or twice a year, and it's "novel" to the defenses which are designed to stop the spread teams.  What goes around, comes around.

I ran the veer in high school. Yes, the veer. Our high school here in Woodstock, GA has been running it for about 4 years now ans has made the playoffs every year. Not a lot of people see it any more and it is different to defend, but I feel it it is going to reach the next level, we have to have another offense to go with it. So as high schools get a little more complicated, I think each will have to have two separate offensive formations in order to be successful. OR they can get lucky and get an abundance of talent. My old HS (Prattville) moved to the spread and have been very successful with it. But I have to say that most of their success has come from excellent defense.

Whatever you run, you need to have the personnel to do it. A fancy offense is only as good as the talent.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Apple has a new football game machine out call the "I-Spread". It was first mistaken as a video porn game, however Apple is working on a porn game to be release in August. They have yet to come up with an "I-" name for it.
