New polling shows Tim James leading Alabama GOP field

Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim James has surged ahead of the field in the GOP primary, with rivals Roy Moore and Bradley Byrne in a virtual tie for second place, according to recent polling conducted by the James campaign and obtained by the Press-Register.

The statewide poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday by Alexandria, Va.-based Ayres McHenry & Associates Inc., showed James leading with 26 percent of the vote, compared to 21 percent for Moore and 20 percent for Byrne. Robert Bentley held 7 percent while 24 percent were undecided.

The primary election is June 1. A spokesman for the James campaign said full results of the poll would be released later today.

Pollster Whit Ayres said James made significant improvement since January, when a previous round of polling showed James in third place with 14 percent of the primary vote. The January poll showed Moore leading with 27 percent and Byrne in second place with 18 percent.

"With just under a month to go in the contest, Tim James is well positioned to make a runoff and win the primary," said Ayers.

Ayers, a top Republican strategist named as "one of the best in the nation" by Roll Call magazine, said the poll surveyed 600 likely voters in the Republican primary and that it had a margin of error of 4 percent.

He told the Press-Register in an interview that the results were supported by polling data showing James with a stronger favorability rating than either Moore or Byrne.

The poll showed James with a 50 to 12 percent favorable to unfavorable rating with 84 percent name recognition, up from a 31 to 13 percent ratio with 63 percent name recognition in January.

Ayres said Byrne, a former state legislator and head of the state's two-year college system, held a 35 to 13 percent favorable to unfavorable rating with 71 percent name recognition. Byrne's unfavorables, he said, have increased as fast as his favorables since January.

"That's not the kind of movement you want to see," Ayres said. "It's hard to make a move up the ballot when your unfavorables are rising like that."

Ayres said Moore's ratings are virtually unchanged since January, with double the unfavorable rating seen for James or Byrne. Moore's favorable to unfavorable score was 49 to 23 percent, compared to the 51 to 25 percent rating he held in January.

"Moore is still in second place by a nose, but the trajectory for him is down. Unless he changes something, the trend will likely continue that way," Ayers said.

James said the poll numbers "confirm what we've been feeling at the grassroots level all across Alabama. People are hungry for common sense leadership and that's why we have all the momentum on our side and are leading this race."
