Saw Merle about 12 years ago in a honkey tonk in Columbus. Merle was: Drunk. As. A. Skunk. He barely got through the concert. His handler kept having to wake him up. Son of a gun kept passing out on his stool right in the middle of "Mama Tried". Awesome.

Fun factoid: His first big gig was with the Pure Prairie League. Mark Knopfler once invited Gill to join Dire Straits.

I was talking to a friend of mine in Nashville that is making his living by playing, writing and working for one of the studios and we were talking about musicians that were underrated and Gill was the first out of his mouth and said that he is the guy everyone in Nashville wants to have work on their album.
