Just saw it on another site. He's #1 going into the fall. They say that Caudle and Trotter will continue to battle Newton throughout the summer and into fall, but after evaluating spring film, they decided they were comfortable naming him the man to beat.

This is not making sense to me.

Why wait weeks after spring training is over when there is allegedly nothing going on?

The timing seems really awkward. Confused.

Not really. Forcing real competition makes them better.

Not the norm I'll admit, but could have come down to Malzahn breaking down practice film after the fact. While not the norm, not really all that far fetched either. I certainly wouldn't read much in to it. It's not like this wasn't known by every swingin' dick anyway.

So you're telling me it took them two weeks AFTER practice was over to see something that they didn't see during the entire spring?

No, I'm telling you that they knew he was going to be the starter, but held back on naming him so to create great competition between the QB's.

Competition = improvement.

Fact is, since practices were closed, we don't really know who, if any of the QBs, got most of the 1st team reps. Could be that this "naming" him is purely academic, and that he took the lion's share of the starter's reps in spring anyway. Could be as you said, they did it knowing he was the starter, but pushed him by not letting him know that. Could be he wasn't nearly what they thought he was, and really struggled to name a starter. Could be pink butterflies and unicorns will fly out of my ass too. At any rate, Cam is named the starter...whehter now, August, 2 weeks in to spring, or 2 weeks in to fall...he's the #1 guy...for now!

Kaos, if you want to call it weird...then so be it.

He went undrafted, and to my knowledge hasn't been picked up on a free agent contract either.

I think, and I don't know why, but I think they announced it this way to divert attention from it. Tiger Prowl is the hot Auburn story. Football is in the beginning of a big dead period. The critics aren't going to be too loud, and the sunshine pumpers are too busy at the beach.
