Birmingham's official Cam Newton prediction

He won't be successful.  Not that he won't be okay but that he won't live up to the expectations being built for him.  I actually feel sorry for the kid.  He would have had a better chance had he gone to a place with a little less "gimmicky" offense.

Okay, serious response.  Chris Todd set several passing records in this "gimmicky" offense.  The fact is that Todd was one of the less talented QB's to play that position at Auburn and he still thrived at times.  Even after the rehab, he didn't have that strong of an arm.  He certainly wasn't fast and he had a real nasty habit of going full retard when under duress.  Even with his limitations, he stepped into a brand new offense and had the success that he did.

One thing that was missing from this offense last year was the ability to run from the QB position.  The offense is designed to require the QB to take off from time to time for it to really click.  Todd tried with some success late in the year but teams just didn't have to respect that because he just wasn't very fast.  Newton is a totally different story.  Much stronger arm.  Much faster and far stronger than any QB we've had.  The players talk about it and the coaches are now raving about his arm strength and more importantly, his placement.  I have no idea if Cam Newton will light up the college world but I have to think that if Chris Todd could do what he did with his limitations, Newton can't help but do some great things.

I'm going to file away the "gimmicky" comment in the "typical bammer douche" file and skip it.  Good try broke-back.

As for how successful Newton will be...well, living up to expectations or not depends on the expectations.  I'm trying to be realistic and cautious and not expect a Tim Tebow/Sam Bradford hybrid...I'm sure there are some Auburn fans that will expect that and probably be disappointed.

By the end of the year I'm expecting him to do at least as well as Chris Todd did.  He may start off slower, since Todd had a fair amount of SEC football behind him going in to last year.  But by the end of the year, I would expect that Newton's numbers are equal or better than Todd's and that he was key in several wins.

If he progresses like that next year, then I would expect that his comfort and talent allow for something more impressive his senior year.  Of course his senior year will take place behind several new starters on the o-line, so those kinds of things have to be considered too.

Malzahn is probably the biggest reassurance I have that Newton will be at least as adequate as Todd.

To this point, Malzhan has had three first-year QB's to run his offense (they didn't run his offense at Arkansas):
2007 - Paul Smith - #5 QB rating of 159.8 - 5,000+ yds , 47 TDs , 19 INTs.
2008 - David Johnson - #2 QB rating of 178.7 - 4,000+ yds, 46 TDs, 18 INTs.
2009 - Chris Todd - #20 QB rating of 145.7 - 2,600+ yds, 22 TDs, only 6 INTs.

I think Malzahn can land Newton somewhere among the numbers listed above.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say whatever quarterback we have this year beats Todd's TD numbers from last year.  Be it Caudle, Trotter, Newton or Mosley

There's a good chance.  Like the Birdman said, Todd did go full-on retard for three whole games last year.  I think for those three games, his QB rating was something like a 78.

Arkansas - 15/28 - 133 yards - 0 TD / 0 INT
Kentucky - 10/24 - 80 yards (!) - 0 TD / 1 INT
LSU - 8/14 - 47 yards (!) - 0 TD / 1 INT

There.  That's your full-on retard mode Chris Todd.

The game before those three?
Tennessee - 19/32 - 218 yards - 1 TD / 0 INT

The game after those three?
Ole Miss - 12/22 - 212 yards - 1 TD / 0 INT

Those aren't stellar stats either, but 31 of 54 (57%), 430 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs in those two games is Joe Montana-like compared to 33 of 66 (50%), 260 yards, 0 TDs and 2 INTs.

If Newton can avoid those games, he'll re-write all of Todd's records.

It's crazy looking back to see how close we were to being 10-3 instead of 8-5.  Kentucky?  Georgia?  Alabama?  Damn.
