Projected NFL draft possibilies
« on: February 16, 2010, 06:11:58 PM »
Every year before the draft, ESPN lists all draft possibilities from each program.  There are always many more listed than will ever be drafted, but it gives you an idea of the number that are at least in the discussion for signing as a free agent.  They also rank the top 100 players for each draft, which is also indicated in the list of players.

SEC programs: number listed - number ranked in the top 100 players
Alabama - 16 - 4
LSU - 16 - 2
Florida - 15 - 8
Ole Miss - 13 - 3
Georgia - 13 - 1
Tennessee - 10 - 3
Kentucky - 8 - 0
Vanderbilt - 6 - 0
Auburn - 5 - 0
Arkansas - 4 - 0
Miss St - 4 - 0
S. Carolina - 4 - 0

Other notable programs: Programs of interest (Northwestern, Boise, etc) or any with at least 8 listed.
USC - 14 - 6
Texas - 13 - 5
Oklahoma - 13 - 5
Notre Dame - 12 - 2
Miami - 12 - 1
Michigan - 11 - 2
Virginia Tech - 11 - 1
Oklahoma St - 10 - 3
Illinois - 10 - 2
Kansas St - 10 - 0
Penn State - 9 - 3
California - 9 - 2
Cincinnati - 9 - 2
Clemson - 9 - 2
Pitt - 9 - 1
Troy - 9 - 1
Ohio St - 9 - 1
Stanford - 9 - 0
Virginia - 9 - 0
E Carolina - 9 - 0
Iowa - 8 - 2
UConn - 8 - 0
Texas Tech - 8 - 0
Indiana - 8 - 0
NC State - 8 - 0
Purdue 8 - 1
UCLA - 8 - 1
Florida State - 8 - 1
Fresno State - 8 - 1
Maryland - 8 - 1
Utah - 8
Rutgers - 8 - 2
Nebraska - 7- 2
Northwestern - 6 - 1
Georgia Tech - 6 - 3
W Virginia - 6 - 0
Wisconsin - 6 - 0
Oregon - 5 - 1
BYU - 5 - 1
TCU - 5 - 2
Iowa St - 5 - 0
Texas A&M - 3 - 0
Boise St - 2 - 1

Of course, the numbers depend on a lot of things....how many seniors you happen to have this year...how many NFL quality juniors you have, etc.

What will be interesting to see are which teams can reload after taking big hits.  Like Ole Miss...I'm guessing they don't have a pipeline of similar talent just filling in the holes.  Alabama very well may.  Florida does on paper, but notice that 8 of their 15 guys are in the Top 100 on the draft board....that's amazing.

Then there are teams like Nebraska and Ohio State that are currently strong teams, but are losing less than 10 guys worthy of being listed.

Very telling...

We'll have two for sure get drafted our, DE/OLB hybrids Brandon Lang and Cameron Sheffield, and our QB, Brown, might go in the later rounds. Other than that the rest will be FAs, I think.

I was seriously thinking Tate would get a little more love than what he is getting.

They have him as the #9 running back.  A lot of people (Kiper Jr maybe?) have in the top 5 for senior backs, but there are some juniors in front of him overall.

Here are the top 10 backs in the draft according to ESPN.
1. CJ Spiller - Clemson - SR
2. Jahvid Best - Cal - JR
3. Ryan Matthews Fresno St - JR
4. Jonathan Dwyer - Ga Tech - JR
5. Dexter McCluster - Ole Miss - SR
6. Montario Hardesty - Tennessee - SR
7. Joe McNight - USC - JR
8. Toby Gerhart - Stanford - JR
9. Ben Tate - Auburn - SR
10. Charles Scott - LSU - SR

CBS Sportsline has them like this:
1. CJ Spiller - Clemson - SR
2. Jonathan Dwyer - Ga Tech - JR
3. Jahvid Best - Cal - JR
4. Ryan Matthews Fresno St - JR
5. Anthony Dixon - Miss St - SR
6. Toby Gerhart - Stanford - JR
7. Joe McNight - USC - JR
8. Montario Hardesty - Tennessee - SR
9. Ben Tate - Auburn - SR
10. Joique Bell - Wayne State - SR

I'm just not enamored with McCluster.  Punt returner maybe.  Can't see him as an every down kind of guy or really somebody a team would want to waste an early pick on.

I would put Tate in front of several of those guys for many reasons but one of the main reasons is because of his body frame. Tate is much more of a NFL build than many of the others.

Felix Jones, Chris Johnson, Devin Hester, Deshawn Jackson, Percy Harvin.

Would all kick Dexter McCluster's ass and mail him back to his mother in four separate Fed Ex packages.

What's your point?

They are all small, quick RB/hybrid players that have made it in the NFL.  Just making a point that it could work for McCluster.

Jones is 6' and 218lbs.

I'd leave him out of this comparison.

He is small compared to the majority of starting RB's in the league.
