So who takes over at Tennessee?
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:34:25 AM »
Do they go after ....Lil' Kiffin?

I wouldn't mind seeing Kiffin out of the SEC.

Since I thought USC would go after Kiffin, you're probably thinking I also know who will be the next Tennessee coach...well I don't...but the skreets are littered with rumors....

#1 on the list is apparently Muschamp, and they (ESPN) say Tennessee is willing to pay big money.

#2 could be John Gruden....I just read that he was an assistant there under Johnny Majors and that his wife was a Tennessee cheerleader, so you never know.

#3 could be David Cutcliffe.  Personally I think he would be a good hire.

Beyond those guys, it's the usual list...Gary Patterson, Houston Nutt (yeah right), Troy Calhoun, Randy Edsal, etc.

I hadn't thought about Cutcliffe until your post.  That would be a home run hire for them, especially in this situation.

Cutcliffe would be a strikeout.  A whiff.  It would be the failiest of fails.

He's a favorite son there, and really has done a bang up job at Duke.  If he hired a decent DC, he could end up with a better overall record at UT than Fulmer had.

Don't disagree that he could work out okay.  He did a good job at Ole Miss, too.

But in perception terms?

They hired boy wonder and put him on a pedestal. Gave him a cape and a mask. They stood solidly behind him when he made mistakes and justified his every gaffe. Well he took his super suit and left their little city.

If Kiffin is Aquaman or Green Arrow or Nightwing or one of the minor super heroes, Cutcliffe is droopy schloopy Underdog.  He's Perry the platypus.

Would it be a good move?  Probably.  Peyton would likely endorse it.  But I just wonder if they'd be willing to take the short-term PR hit that hiring a pedestrian guy like Cutcliffe instead of a flashy splash (which might not work out nearly as well) like Gruden or Muschamp would inevitably bring.

** He was also fired at Ole Miss and replaced by Orgeron who just told Tennessee to fuck off and tried to steal their recruits.  So there's that history, too.

It's a fail from a perception standpoint.

Gotcha.  Instead of the towering 550 ft moon shot over the center field stands, he would appear more like the 305 squeaker that barely made it over the right field ivy.

Or maybe a ground ball that gets legged out to an inside the parker...

Can't imagine anybody who would look at a Cutcliffe hire on day one and think, DAMN that ball's headed outta here!  Five years later, though...?

IMO:  Cutcliffe would be a good hire in long run.  Agree with Koas, not the splash hire.  I don't think Gruden will take the job, he has been rumored for anything from the Skins, ND, USC, L'Ville....etc....etc...etc and has not expressed a real interest in any of them.  I think we see him in the booth again next year.  Muschamp? I don't know if he is ready yet.   Mike Leach?  I don't know if they would take him and he does come with baggage. No matter how innocent I think he is and how much of a pussy I think James and his son are.

It's a fail from a perception standpoint.

This is a good point, but I also wonder if droopy schloopy Underdog is exactly what they'd want after Aquadouche?

Maybe the "young brazen loud mouth" thing is making everyone want the mature, father-figure type to come in and calmly take over what the wild one left in shambles?

Maybe they had their time rolling in the hay with the girl from the other side of the tracks....maybe now they need someone with manners and class that they can proudly take home to their parents.

Who knows.

   Nutt                               Miles

I don't think Nutt is going anywhere.
Cutcliffe would have been a strong hire before he got ill. Not now.
I wonder about Muschamp's demeanor as a HC
And Fisher isn't interested?

How long before somebody says "nick saban"?

How long before somebody says "bobby petrino"

I will say this on record.  If they end up with Patterson from TCU?  I'm going to punch Jay Jacobs in the face.

I would ask that you wait at least one season to see how things go.  If he goes 10-2 or better, then punch Jacobs in the face....repeatedly.

Of course, if we also go 10-2, then Prowler gets to punch you in the face repeatedly.

No to Saban- lateral, actually longitudinal too much of a rival.
Petrino is like Tubs IMO. Where now? Exactly how far is that? Hmm!
Again, has Fisher been mentioned?

That makes two of us. Any fan of any SEC school, except the school he would potentially go to, should thank their lucky stars that CTT is staying out of the SEC.

According to ESPN, Phillip Fulmer has been contacted by Tennessee. Talk about having them by the balls. According to Texas' Rivals site, Muschamp turned Tennessee down rather quickly. I can't blame him. No halfway decent coach will go there, especially now that the program has been tainted by Kiffin. Same deal with USC. The NCAA is bearing down on both schools, and nobody with connected brain cells worth a damn would go to either school at this point. It certainly explains Kiffin to USC.

This shit is just flat out epic. Oh, and for your viewing pleasure.....

I heard that Fulmer rumor last night but woke up to nothing about it this morning and dismissed it.

He is only 59, which means he could go another 7-10 years realistically.  Maybe a year off rejuvenated him and he's ready to come back and start over.  I know that doesn't usually work out well (John Robinson with USC, Johnny Majors at Pitt....but both went back 10+ years later), but it's only been one year....maybe it could work.
