Good for Tubbs and congrats to him.  I think he would have been a better fit at USF, but glad he's landed a job.

Agreed, but I suppose he showed his hand too quickly and made some promises in Lubbock.

He would have dominated the Big East.

Texas Tech?  Not so much of chance recruiting against Texas and Oklahoma.  Nebraska's on the rise too.

I once said that if Tuberville went to a major program he'd win a NC.

This is not that program.

How do you think he'll do in recruiting sandwiched between Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M (let alone Baylor or Oklahoma St.)?

At first, I was in this boat.

Now, I'm not so sure.  The Big 12 hates defense for the most part.  The two teams in the Big 12 championship this year both had great defensive coaches.  I think Tuberville's coaching alone will push TT's defense into the top 5 in the league.  If he can pull off a win or two that he shouldn't, I can see the NC game a possibility.

If he has a chance though, it will be earlier in his career there rather than later.

Texas is a BIG state.  The man coaches up mid level talent better than most people in the game.  He'll do fine.

I've always said, once Texas Tech gets a strong defense, they'll be unstoppable.  But I figured that they'd keep their same offense.

I agree guys, no one ever said the guy couldn't be a force, especially coaching up talent. But I always felt we were always Ms. Congeniality in the SEC, especially the way we showed against Georgia, LSU and Arkansas. Letting Alabama getting the upper hand was the final straw. If Jetgate was a symptom, Saban is a tumor.

Tubs inheriting an existing staff in Lubbock?  That means those boys will be teaching him about brisket and force him to eschew the pork!

I'm on my phone so I'm not looking it up, but I think the TT defense has been pretty good the last couple years.  I think they led the Big 12 in sacks last year.  I think it turned around when he fired his old DC and named Ruffin McNeal DC.  Good thing on offense is that the current staff are all young guys (been the 2-3 yrs), so they're likely to be there for at least a couple years.

Another coaching change that may be taking place is Kirby Smart to UGA as DC.

Rivals Skreets is saying Kirby to UGA for 800,000+ a year.  Nothing official yet, just waiting on the text messages to confirm.

Yup, that's what I've been hearing too.

Quote
Smart played defensive back for Georgia from 1995-98, making All-SEC as a senior,  and began his coaching career as an administrative assistant at Georgia in 1999. He also coached running backs at UGA in 2005.

For most of his coaching career, Smart has worked under Nick Saban -– at LSU (2004), the Miami Dolphins (2006) and Alabama (since 2007).  He has been the Tide’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

Saban seemed to be sending a pointed message to Smart on Friday when he said at a news conference that assistant coaches should not make lateral career moves.

“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank,” Saban said. “You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make and really aren’t in your best interests for a career standpoint.”
