True, but really, TT has had it in for Leach ever since they went through that big contract dispute.  It's kind of the same situation Tuberville had, but they got him in a few months, not years.

Damn he built that program?

You're right, he is their best coach, but they have a decent history.  Spike Dykes was another well known coach, and they were pretty good in the 70s, winning 55 games from 1972 to 1978 (including 11 wins in 73 and 10 wins in 76).

They've only been playing 85 years, so they only have 510 wins, but they're 510-393, which isn't bad.

They've never finished in the Top 10, although they've finished with two or fewer losses 11 times.

But Leach is definitely the best they've had.  TT has won 8 games 16 times since 1950, 8 of which have come under Leach.  He's won at least 8 games eight straight years, which is pretty damn good.  It's like someone doing that at Ole Miss.

TT screwed up here. Especially since there is NOTHING proven that the man did anything wrong. This was just the crease they were looking for to fire him.

As I said before: Auburnitis.

Except here there was no performance issues or internal issues on the staff/team. This was pure innuendo on one players part who used daddy's bully pulpit to get heads rolling. While they may seem similar, these are 2 very different situations. The TTU Ath Dept actually made ours not look like the worst in D1.

It is different overall, but it's the same in that the TT administration can't stand Leach and has been looking for a reason to fire him.  Just like the powers that be at Auburn had been waiting since 2003 to fire Tuberville, the Texas Tech jokers were looking for any reason to fire Leach.

Personally I don't think the James factor had much to do with it.  His daughter also goes there....he likes the school.  In fact, the kid is a walk-on...he chose to go play for Leach and could have left at any time (without losing a scholarship or anything like that).

What I mean is, because the administration there already hated Leach, James never had to pull any strings or throw around any ESPN weight to get Leach fired or anything like that.

They signed him to that deal last year while cussing his name.  Not to mention, they now avoid paying him an employment bonus of $800,000 due tomorrow.  Ultimately, they hated him and finally got their way out of him.

Right....but wasn't that avenue to unemployment paved with much greater ease when ESPN is telling the world that you abuse your players?

Would that story have been newsworthy without James's relationship to the broadcasting giant?

Actually, he is a scholarship player. He had no offers from a D1 team and he played on TT's baseball team. Bottom line, he was given a scholarship as a favor to his father. Leach and the WR coach at the time watched a highlight tape put together by James' father. The WR coach did not want him, but Leach overruled him and offered a scholarship.

I think so.  You might be right, maybe it wouldn't be quite a big of a story.

But to me, Tech suspended their coach from the team's bowl game....that was the lead in the story when it broke.  In fact, the first time I heard about it was on the radio and the person reading the story said "...player Adam Jones".  I know it's an added part of the story, but a team suspending their coach, then the coach announcing he and his lawyers expect him to get fired (because they already knew the admins wanted to do it), then actually firing him...to me, all of that is the story, far more than the fact that the kid was James' son.

It makes it more interesting, and is another note in the story....but to me the story is Leach getting canned.  He's a bit of a coaching icon (not to be confused with legend).  I think the fact that his team was #2 in the country at one point last year makes this a bigger deal too, because the program has been at a peak of national recognition the last 18 months or so.

He's won 70 games in the last 8 years, never less than 8 in a year.  He hasn't lost to Oklahoma in Lubbock since 2003.  I know you don't need to know all this, or already do know it, I'm just saying it's why, to me, him being fired is all the reason for the story being as big as it is.

I think it would have in a period shortly after the Mangino / Kansas situation.   Kind of like when a shark attack happens in the gulf.  Once a year, you probably don't hear much, a couple a month and ever nibble is making national news.
