Tubbs to the Big 12?????
« on: December 11, 2009, 12:29:36 PM »
Someone sent me this link to their Scout Forum.  Looks like the fans would like to have him, plus Kansas is in the Central Flyway so he could still duck hunt.

In his first news conference as AUBURN'S head coach in 1981, Pat Dye was asked this question:  "How long will it take you to beat Alabama"?  To which he responded, "Oh, about 60 minutes".

They are all under the impression that he would be a great get for them.  Also, Tubs sounds a little desperate in his quotes.  Said he could "move overnight."  I guess Nall could set up the truck in a moment's notice...

If Tubbs dipped and went West, I'd have to unfriend him on facebook.

Heres a couple quotes from some of the fans concerning AU and Tubbs...

"MikeStinkey wrote: 6-3 in Bowls. Why was he fired again? 1 down year?

They have a lunatic alum with money running their AD.  He is the one that was flying to interview Petrino at Louisville while Auburn was winning 10 games a year.  He was also forced to change to the spread offense which resulted in the 5-7 year."

"MikeStinkey wrote: Why was he fired again? 1 down year?

No, apparently he 'poked' a player and has some anger issues. Also something about going off on a parking attendant.  Anyways..."

Yeah, I don't get this.  If Lew hasn't contacted him by now, can't we assume Lew isn't that interested?  It's not as if Lew has never heard of him.

I have a hard time believing there hasn't been some sort of contact, frankly. And to those saying he sounds desperate, he has maintained all year he wants to get back into coaching, and we have easily the most attractive BCS job available IMO.

I'd love this hire, if we did it.

Not to mention the fact that the KU job would definitely fall into the "project" category.  Tuberville says he wants to build a program, and not only that, he thinks that it is possible to WIN here.

No offense to the other candidates, but if a coach of Tuberville's quality is making this kind of appeal, it's hard to NOT look at him.  But as others have mentioned, I'm sure that Lew has had an eye on Tuberville since day one, at least to just see what he might be doing."

"AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville's job was not in jeopardy when he decided to step down and he declined several requests from his bosses to reconsider, athletic director Jay Jacobs said Thursday. Jacobs said Tuberville's departure after 10 mostly successful seasons was “completely his decision” and that the coach would be leading the Tigers next season if he had not chosen to leave.

Sounds like he fired himself for a disappointing season."

Theres eight pages of comments on the subject on their forum. Seems like Tubbs, Harbaugh, Gill, and Holtz are their choices with Harbaugh first and Tubbs second.

A couple more quotes...

"I prefer Tuberville > Harbaugh

He has shown he can win consistently in the SEC.  How will Harbaugh do without Gerhart?

Tuberville might finish his career at KU.  Harbaugh will be gone as soon as a major program opens, if he does well.

Tuberville knows the Big 12 and Texas.  Tuberville stresses defense.

I just have the impression he would be better at sharing the spotlight with Bill Self.

But it would be a nice problem to have."

This one make me chortle...

"Having worked in Alabama most of the year, I can tell you that - especially from the Auburn perspective - losing to Alabama in the Iron Bowl is like a condensed eight-game losing streak."

I think that Tuberville would say what he needed to say to get back working again, but would take a Texas based job at the drop of a ten gallon hat if one ever opened up...

I wouldn't like to see him there I don't think.  Mangino is 50-48 due mostly to one great year of 12-1.  Before him, the last guy to coach there with a winning record was 1948 to 1953.  It's not Iowa State, but it's not an easy place to win, certainly not consistently.

Mangino won more than 8 games one time.  That 12-1 record was due to two things....1. Todd Reesing the QB, and 2. extremely weak conference schedule (and weaker non-conference).

That year they beat Kansas State (5-7), Colorado (6-7), Baylor (3-9), Texas A&M (7-6), Nebraska (5-7), Oklahoma State (7-6), Iowa State (3-9), and Missouri (12-2).

So they played one team with more than 7 wins and they lost to them.  They didn't play Texas, Oklahoma, or Texas Tech.   Their team in 2008 was just as good as the 2007 team, but they were 8-5...why?  Because they played South Florida (lost), Oklahoma (lost), Texas Tech (lost), and Texas (lost).

I think the best Tuberville could do there is to consistently win 7 games with the occasional strong senior class and weak schedule to win 9 or 10 games.  I like him and don't care to watch him toil in obscurity in the middle of nowhere.
