Jailbroken iPhone
« on: December 07, 2009, 03:05:15 PM »
I am king nerd. I jailbroke my iPhone and now I don't feel so bad about not having a Droid.

Tons of awesome apps, and now I can record video on my 3G (not S); I can tether so I can use my iPhone as a modem; I have an NES emulator with every game imaginable stored natively; I have a program that can download MP3's, movies, and torrents; I have Google Voice to skimp on my minutes if need be; I have several completely fucking awesome Auburn themes to choose from (including custom lock & battery screens).

And I thought it'd be difficult or challenging to jailbreak a phone.

It's not.

Look up blackra1n. It's retard simple.

I'm too much of a wuss to try and mess with my iPhone because I am scared I will jack something up or if when I download something, I will give away every bank account number and password that I know somehow...but...I did research a little on-line and I ran across this. You may want to do this because it sounds like your device me be open to being hacked.

Yeah, already did that.

It defaults to "alpine", but I changed mine.

Oh, and also, there's no real danger in messing anything up.

Run a backup before you do it, and worst case scenario, you can restore factory settings and back up to your old phone.

Jailbreak will be gone.

No problems.

Can you still back up your data with iTunes or whatever?

Yup. Actually, with every backup you're not backing up any of the Cydia (jailbroken) applications. It backs up as if none of that stuff were installed.

By the way, when you install blackra1n, you have three "app stores" to choose from. Get Cydia only. Rock takes a paid subscription, and Icy will disconnect you from AT&T (only use this if you want to move wireless providers).

It takes a little bit of effort (not much) to do some of the cooler things like get any paid iTunes app for free, but I figured it out and my phone is the fucking shit right now.

I'm about to junk mine anyway so I will probably break it before I do.

The thing was absolutely WORTHLESS when I was in NY.  Dropped call after dropped call.  Kicked me off the network repeatedly.  Could get on the internet maybe once out of six or eight tries.  And you know what that does to battery life when it's churning to try to get connected.

Stupid bitch of a thing was dead by mid afternoon most days.

Meanwhile my wife's blackberry cruised happily along.  No dropped calls. No trouble connecting.  Only charged it once in five days.

The battery life sucks, I have to charge it everywhere I go.

That looks like it would solve some of the issues, At 2.66 oz it shouldn't be to bulky.I have a car charger, and a extra wall charger in my briefcase for constant charging.

I was gonna suggest that.

I have one. Less bulky than my girlfriend's Otterbox (a phone cover, not a slang term for her vagina). It adds some weight and a little depth, but it's negligible considering its benefit.

I love it. Especially now that I'm playing on it nonstop with the new functionality.

I got the $99 TomTom app (free).

It's badass. I'm throwing away my Magellan standalone GPS. Or I guess I could try to sell it...

Only problem is it's heavy as fuck. Took about 5GB of space up.

I'm gonna look into going into the app's folder and cleaning some stuff out (like most of the foreign language voices).

Although, after briefly looking into TomTom voices, it is obvious that I have to get Mr. T and the pornstar added as well.

The apple fanboys will scare you into thinking it will ruin your phone, but there's no real danger there.

Worst case scenario, you can restore you phone to factory settings, and if you backed it up, restore from there.

I guess it could be a pain in the ass when Apple releases an OS update, but that happens so rarely, and frankly I can't imagine them coming out with anything must have that I can't get already on my jailbroken phone.

Even if they did, after a couple of weeks they'd have the jailbroken apps updated.

I do it all the time. It synches the stuff it knows you have. Doesn't mess with the others.

Ive had both. Loved the blackberry. Just didnt like the weekly reboot you have to do (or it crashes/freezes). I think Apple is going to take a long hard look at Verizon. AT&T sucks ass. They even tried to sue Verizon over the maps on the TV commercials and the judge just threw out the case last week. Apple is getting frustrated with them and their shotty coverage.
