The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was conducting a traffic stop along the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near milemarker 243. The highway was shut down in both directions for several hours and remained close at the start of morning rush-hour.
Authorities removed the officer's patrol car from the side of the highway around 6:20 a.m. Friday.

Hoover Police took two people into custody in connection with the shooting around 1:30 Friday morning. Authorities also found a suspect vehicle, a silver Acura TL, near 43rd Avenue North and Inglenook Street in Birmingham.
Pelham police say the white male taken into custody will be identified after formal charges have been fired. Right now the shooting is being investigated as a murder of a police officer.
Lifesaver helicopter had been dispatched to the shooting scene in Pelham moments after the gunfire, but the officer was taken by ambulance to UAB hospital with a police escort. Authorities confirmed shortly after 6:00 a.m. that the officer had died.
Right now, there is no word on the nature of the traffic stop that led to the shooting. The traffic stop took place in a stretch of highway that is undergoing major construction.

Name hasn't been released publicly, but he was a friend of a friend (who is also an officer.) Left behind a wife and 3 month old from what I understand.
Not much info besides it was a routine stop late at night in that construction zone on I65. I live in Pelham, and passed where it happened this morning on the way to work as there were still a few cars on the scene.
Token... be careful buddy. I have a lot of friends who are in law enforcement... it could have been any one of them, and honestly, I've had my max for funerals this year.
As my facebook status says.... there are not punishments in place today fitting for those that kill the ones who protect us.
