If my wife were making a bunch and I didn't want her to stay home with the kids, maybe it's not about the money.

But when you're working 15 or 16 hours a day -- and when you coach you can forget about that "summers off" bullpoop.  We were there for morning workouts at 5:30 a.m. so the punk ass kids could have their summer jobs.  Worked all day on either cleaning stuff up, equipment repair, game planning or whatever and then we'd do a noon workout and one at 6 at night.  So they could have their free time and still get the workouts in.  I did at least one clinic in every sport I coached.  Those lasted three days  to a week.  Football clinic in Auburn. Basketball clinic in South Carolina. Softball clinic at LSU.  Plus the ones we did locally.

If you looked at it on an hourly basis?  I was probably making less than minimum wage.

No doubt.  I love how people think that teachers, come home at 3 everyday and make the comments about having 3 months off in the summer.  People don't realize the workshops you have to go to during the summer for continuing education credits.  There is a lot more hours that people realize.

I still find myself having to help my wife do things for her class.  I also ask her at the start of every year how much it is going to cost us so she can get materials and supplies for her room.  That was another kicker, instructional supply money never came close to taking care of all that was needed.

Yeah no thanks on all that coaching stuff.   I was going to get $800/year to work double time each week.

I lucked out, though.  I thought my career was over because I was in my first few months of being a teacher, and my principal is big on males participating in a sport.  I got to stay on, and I took over the character education program, and I'm in charge of inventory/technology at a school of 1800 kids.

Just one more year til tenure....

Good luck with that. I hope it works out the best way it can for you. You definitely have a full plate.

I'd rather be shoveling poop for $15/hour and talking poop eight hours a day with my brothers.

Do you really? No - serious. I actually did this for about year back about 9-10 years ago. I worked for a city govt at the waste water plant. In the summer, we would literally shovel poop into the front bucket of a John Deere and dump it in a Waste Mgt dumpster. Am I proud of it? Hell no. But it was good for me. I needed a break and just took this job to get a breather from the busy world. I only made 9 bucks an hour but I was happier at that time than anytime before that. Yep, I had a college degree from AU, was making about 9/hr shoveling poop and was happy. Learned some lessons, learned to do without a lot of money and manage it better and also got more motivated to do what I really wanted to do in life out of college - own my own business. Like Kaos, I now own my own business. Things have a real weird way of working out some times.

Hey now. I have worked waste water treatment plants before, but they have a solids screening porcess. Once it goes through that, and you wouldn't believe the shit people flush, then it's on to the aeration. I never had to shovel shit, but I would have. I was an electrician installing process controls, instrumentation and power.

yep, I have heard that since my days doing that, the technology of sorting a city's poop has advanced. Back then they would basically pour the solids from the digesters into "drying beds". After a month or so, they would dry and cake up like brownies (looked just like em) and thats when we would scoop it up and dispose of it. The nastiest part was the solid screener in the front of the process where the wastewater comes into the plant. Good gosh....corn, condoms, 10.00 bills, shoestrings - everything. And absolutely disgusting.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
