Malzahn's Auburn

Malzahn's Auburn
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:17:31 AM »
This is a discussion topic -

What happens to Auburn if Gus Malzahn leaves after this year?  What happens to Auburn if Malzahn stays for three but then leaves for a bigger coaching gig?

Deeper question - How much of Chizik's and Auburn's success is attributed to Gus Malzahn's offense?

Some notes to think about:

1.  The defense is the worst in the SEC.  Chizik and Roof tag team the defense.
2.  The offense is one of the best in the SEC.
3.  When the offense hasn't clicked, we've been blown out.
4.  We're receiving commitments and interest from offensive recruits that we've haven's sniffed since 2002.

If Malzahn were to leave after this year, Chizik would have to go out and hire another successful, big-time OC.  That's all there is to it.  I would worry if he tried to promote from within.  Although Trooper aspires to be an OC one day, I just don't think he's ready for the job at a big-time SEC school.

If Malzahn leaves this year we are fucked. He is the main reason we have these big recruits coming in. If he leaves in 3 or 4 years? Who knows...

I seriously think it would be devistating though to lose him after this year...

Defense and offense have to work together, but the only way this defense would have been worth a shit is if they never saw the field.  I'm not sure about Roof yet, but I think we know Chiz knows defense.  The primary problem is talent and depth of talent.  IMO, we don't have a single DT that would start for any team like FL, Bammer, LSU, UGA, or UT.  It all starts in the middle.  Our LBs are talented but very very thin.  Secondary is VERY thin.

Offense.  Malzahn is pretty good.  He leaves me with some questions about play calling at times, but with talent, the offense will be just fine.  Mainly need a QB that can run the show.  If Malzahn leaves, there's others.  Can't fret about all that.  What happens happens...IF he leaves this year, some school is really stupid (UNLESS it's a lower level school...which I think we could beat out their HC money bid to keep him)...he has too little experience at this level to turn a program over to him to run.  Making an offensive game plan, calling plays, and running a program are very different things...many decision makers, however, don't know this and hire guys based on what their offense did most recently.  They're stupid.  That is not to say it always turns out bad, but Malzhan needs more experience at this level.  If he goes, there's others that know his system, or something similar...rememer he doesn't run anything scheme wise that others don't do, and the tempo thing is sprining up all over football.  More often than not, when your offense can't score you'll get beat. Simple as that.  I like Malzahn, but my hope is we get 3-5 years out of him to the point he gets a very good gig.  If that happens, that means Auburn will have been pretty successful over that time.  As for Chiz...he has to be good enough to roll with such changes and make the transitions as seemless as possible.  If he can't then he's not the man for the job.

I wouldn't say we're completely fucked if Turbo Gus leaves us at the end of the year, but it would be quite a large step backwards.

It takes a while to tune something this massive.  You may be able to build a race car in a day, but you don't win the Indy 500 without a of R&D behind it.  I think Gus will stick around.

I've been to the Indy 500, he's not lying.

I believe Gus intends to stick around....but as soon as SE Memphis State or whoever offers him $1.5 million....he's gone, race car parts and R&D files along with him.

If he's gonna leave, it'll be before the bowl game.  Whoever is looking at him will want him to recruit players in this class.

I think when he watches his team put up 600 yards with players that he didn't even recruit, then looks at the fact that he's at a program now that can really swing a big dick in the recruiting field..... he'll stick around for a year or two and see what happens.

But, we'll see.

Are you aware just how badly your post reflects on both Auburn and Chizik?

You are making the same arguments against Malzahn being ready that I made (and was blasted for) in reference to Chizik's readiness?

Chizik knows defense? Not as a HC he doesn't. ISU was horrific. AU is merely abysmal. How many godawful defenses does he have to preside over as HC before we can safely remove the "defensive genius" label?

We are at three and counting. How many "great" defEnses did he run as DC? two?

Unbelivable.

Defense and offense have to work together, but the only way this defense would have been worth a poop is if they never saw the field.

Okay, I've said this many times before but it bears repeating.  A corch's performance as a coordinator has little or nothing to do with the probability of success as a Head Corch.  Tim Brando was interviewing Oregon's Corch a couple of weeks ago and asked him what was the biggest eye opener about handling the head corch's position.  The answer was the unbelievable amount of non-footbal related stuff you have to handle.  He said it has NOTHING to do with sitting in a room watching film and the single mindedness of preparing your unit for the upcoming game.

It's mostly administrative.  It's dealing with the public, the trustees, the AD, the radio shows, the TV shows, commercials, speaking engagements, hiring, firing and on and on and on.  Gene Chizik solely in charge of a defense may be an awesome thing.  Gus Malzahn solely in charge of an offense has been incredible more often than not.  Will Muschump is doing a bag up job and has Texas' D as one of the best in the nation.  But, what about when the whole Texas program is dumped in his lap.  Will he be able to survive on BOOM MUTHA FUCKA???

You kind of side stepped the question.  Your last two sentences touch on what I was looking for.  Is Chizik good enough to roll with the punches?  Can he handle making splash hires like Malzahn every time a coordinator and/or assistant coach leaves?

I'm really curious what this board thinks.

I think Chizik has done a great job getting these assistants, and they're doing a hell of a job in recruiting.  With that said, I don't know if Chizik can survive without Malzahn.  I'm not sure we would have won more than 4 games without him.

If Malzahn leaves this season, and it is a possibility, then we may be in trouble.  I'm not so sure Chizik will have another splash hire left to keep the train rolling.

Chizik was smart enough to hire Gus in the first place as his first choice.  I'm sure his "wish list" of OCs had a few more names on it.  There are other good OCs out there.  I like Gus, have since he was at Arky, but he is not irreplaceable.

That said, I hope Gus sticks around for 2-3 years.

I think Chizik blew his wad as far as assistants go. Really, its just hard to tell due to how fluid assistant coaching jobs are, though. I mean, who the fuck would have guessed James Willis would end up at Alabama? I still remember one of Chizik's interviews explaining why he chose Malzahn. It was because he saw Tulsa putting up a shitload of points, and he wanted that at AU. While I'm sure he researched a little into it, I'm not so sure I would want our coach making a statement like that. When Major Applewhite left UA, I had no idea who the fuck Jim McElwain was. An OC for Fresno State? WTF? But it turned out OK. You just never know. Its not always about hiring the hottest name out there.
