Meyer: Tebow hit late vs. Georgia
Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer believes Southeastern Conference officials missed a late hit on Tim Tebow in Saturday's game against Georgia.

Meyer said Wednesday the crew calling the game should have flagged Bulldogs linebacker Nick Williams for knocking his quarterback to the ground well after he had gotten rid of the football.

Meyer sent video of the play to Rogers Redding, the league's coordinator of officials. Meyer declined to reveal what the SEC told him, saying he didn't "want to step out of line."

Last week the SEC changed its discipline policy about coaches publicly criticizing officials, making the punishment either a fine or a suspensions and doing away with the reprimands.

Meyer told reporters on the weekly SEC conference call the play was directly in front of the referee and should have penalized. Tebow handed off to running back Jeff Demps, took a few steps to his right and wasn't looking when Williams came unblocked off the right edge and slammed into his chest.

"That should have been a penalty, in my opinion," Meyer said. "Obviously, it should have been. You've got to protect quarterbacks. That's the whole purpose. It's right in front of the referee. I'm not sure how they're going to handle that, but ... that was one of the plays we did send in."

Meyer didn't mention the play until asked about it Wednesday, possibly trying to avoid drawing punishment from the league. He also prefaced his comments by saying he has "great respect" for SEC officials and the way the league handles complaints.

The SEC decided to stop handing out reprimands for ripping officials after three coaches in less than a week were reprimanded last month.

Commissioner Mike Slive was given full discretion by the league's athletic directors and presidents to hand out the punishment. He will determine the amount of fines and lengths of suspensions on a case-by-case basis.

The SEC's officiating, and public complaints by Tennessee's Lane Kiffin and Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, has drawn plenty of unwanted attention for the league.

An officiating crew was suspended last month after it called penalties the league said were not supported by video evidence in the LSU-Georgia game Oct. 3 and the Arkansas-Florida game Oct. 17. The SEC publicly announced the suspensions, an unprecedented move by the conference.

Listen for the inciteful comments from Vern "would that be an incomplete pass?" Lundquist....he says two very very inciteful things.

BTW, that should've been an unsportsmanlike conduct, late hit on a defenseless player, 15 yarder.

I like it.  The "hm" is well played.

Hard to believe that happened in front of an official and no one did anything. Although it's hard NOT to take every opportunity to lay out Tebow. LOL

Seems as though XOS Digital (the company that makes the content for secdigitalnetwork.com) has found out about that video and have had it yanked from YouTube. In any event though, I think we all know it was sort of a cheap shot, but I don't think it was an illegal hit. It was a running play, and the play hadn't been whistled dead yet. Now, if Nick Williams hit him after the whistle, then by all means. But it was a run play and Tebow was still moving after handing the pass off. How is it any different than a WR blocking a DB on a run and knocking him down 15 yards downfield?

I thought Slive was gonna start suspending coaches who publicly commented about the officiating. Let's see what happens here when it involves the chosen ones.

This.
I don't care how much Filipino foreskin he ingests, he still has pads on.
Furthermore, is this not the same premise that a play action pass is based on? Granted, this was obviously a running play and the LB knew it when he hit Tebow, but if you start flagging shit like this, its going to open a bigass can of worms. Meyer knows damn good and well you take a shot at the QB anytime you can within the rules. You don't let up. You hit that fucker as much as you can, whenever you can. I guarantee you that he teaches his defense the same thing, because everybody teaches that. Get him on his ass as much as possible. Like you said, he still has pads on. Other players are actually allowed to hit the allmighty Tebow.

I wonder if Gary will be going on talk radio apologizing because he didn't understand the rule like he did after the UA/UT game.

Sort of a cheap shot.....Are you fuckin' serious????  Tebow handed off to the runningback, Dive Run.  Nick Williams actually looks at the RB, then he looks back at Tebow.  Tebow doesn't know that Williams is standing there, and Williams sees that Tebow doesn't know that he's there.  Tebow takes one step towards Williams, and Williams, not only lays him out, but he hit him high with his helmet and forarms.  It wasn't like Tebow was running at him, faking that he had the ball, he was just standing there, because it was a dive play.  So, yeah, it was an illegal hit on a defenseless player....if they're going to call hitting a receiver after the ball goes over his head, as a 15 yard illegal hit...then the hit on Tebow would've definitely been the same.   I guess when Etoro knocks out Mc El Roy, after he's handed off to Ingram and Ingram is making a big run or whatever, and a flag isn't called, then we should all expect you to come on here and say that it wasn't an illegal hit....Oh wait, what am I saying, there will be a flag, flags will probably fly from every ref on the field, plus from the replay officials.  They'll probably just go ahead and reward SPuat with 7 points and make Auburn kickoff again.

Actually I believe the inbred is correct.  It was a live situation, anyone on the field is live and can be hit/blocked.  Much like a guy standing around on a punt return or int, not paying attention, will get leveled.

Still a cheap shot though.

Agreed.

In pee wee football this season, we played a team with a fast quarterback.  After scouting them the week before we played, we noticed they faked a naked bootleg on every hand-off.  Every 4 or 5 plays, the qb would keep and get huge chunks of yardage, as nobody paid him any attention.  Smart coaching on their part.

When we played them, we had a linebacker hit him on the first three plays.  After the second hit, their coaching staff complained.  The ref told them it wasn't a penalty  After the third hit, they didn't try it anymore.  They tried to run the naked boot twice later on, and both times was a tackle for a loss.

Cheap shot, you say?  I call it victory.

Rule 9-1-3 (FR-120) (Replaces 9-1-2-l, m, n)

Initiating Contact/Targeting an Opponent
a. No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

b. No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. When in question, it is a foul. (Refer to Points of Emphasis for a description of “Defenseless Player.”)

PENALTY (a-b)Personal Foul. 15 yards basic spot, or 15 yards from the succeeding spot for dead-ball fouls. Also, automatic first down for fouls by Team B if not in conflict with other rules.
(Exception: Penalties for offensive team personal fouls behind the neutral zone are enforced from the previous spot. Safety if the foul occurs behind Team A’s goal line) [S7, S24, S34, S38, S39, S40, S41, S45 or S46]. Flagrant offenders shall be disqualified [S47].

For Team A foul during free or scrimmage kick plays: Enforcement may be at the previous spot or the spot where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team B (field goal plays exempted) (Rules 6-1-8, 6-3-13).

So, still not an illegal hit?

On a run play, please explain to me what players are considered "defenseless". On a run play, or kickoff, etc, all players are fair game. Supposedly you played football. This should be easy for you to understand. Now, if it had been after the whistle, he would have been considered defenseless, for the simple fact that players do not expect to be hit after the whistle. If he got hit like 3 seconds after releasing a pass, he would be considered defenseless. If he were a punter or kicker and somebody clocked his ass as he was coming down from his follow through, he would be considered defenseless. No matter how you slice it, you're not going to see a flag on a play such as the Tebow hit. And you shouldn't, either.
