My picks for SEC Week 8
« on: October 23, 2009, 08:07:50 AM »
Please add your thoughts in the reply. Thanks.

LSU 17, Auburn 10
Auburn’s offense has gone in the tank the last two weeks and put a thin defense in bad position leading to two straight losses in the conference. LSU’s defense is good, but the offense is a huge disappointment, especially the running game. Conventional wisdom says LSU, at home, will blow Auburn out as the Tigers have snoozed through the last two games. However, the games in this series have been close for many years and I expect nothing less this week. In the end, Auburn can’t stop any team, even a bad offense and LSU can stop teams, especially struggling offenses.

Florida 44, Mississippi State 10
Tim Tebow and the Gators take on former OC Dan Mullen and his rebuild project in Mississippi State. MSU’s defense has progressively played better as the offense has started to come around some. Florida has played it close to the vest for several weeks (for varied reasons). I look at this game similar to the Gators matchup with Kentucky – Florida has way better athletes at every position (with the exception being RB). Coupled with their speed on defense and familiarity with the scheme, the Gators will roll here.

Ole Miss 27, Arkansas 24
Arkansas continues to improve at a much faster rate than their talent allows for. After blowing out Auburn and fighting Florida before succumbing in the end, the Razorbacks are due a let down in a game. Ole Miss’s offense has been less than spectacular, but the defense is solid and good against the pass. Turnovers will be the key to this game and I think Ole Miss will make enough plays to get by an up and coming Arkansas team.

Alabama 31, Tennessee 6
The third Saturday in October can best be understood as a game of hate. Just ask this guy - . Tennessee had an off week after blasting Georgia (finally finding some offense to go with a decent defense) and the Vols nation would love nothing more than to play spoiler here. Alabama’s defense is top notch in every way. The running game is excellent while the passing game needs more consistency. Alabama won’t need to throw to beat Tennessee as the Vols won’t be able to handle Mark Ingram and the very good Tide offensive line. It’ll be close early, but get out of hand late.

South Carolina 27, Vanderbilt 7
South Carolina is the second best team in the SEC East so far. The defense is good and the offense works well enough especially against lesser defenses. Vanderbilt is not really good at offense or defense. The Gamecocks strut in this one.

Kentucky 26, La. Monroe 20
Without looking, which team has the better record? That’s right – the Warhawks of La. Monroe. Of course, they didn’t play three ranked teams in a row – all losses – like the Wildcats did. Kentucky comes off an emotional (if surprising) win against Auburn and returns home to take on this common (to the SEC) foe from the Sun Belt. La. Monroe is no pushover and will test Kentucky, but the ‘Cats run game should be enough to get the win here and move them above .500. In the end, Kentucky still has better players on the team than La. Monroe and that’s difference enough to matter.

Nice breakdown.  I agree that UF will kick the puppies hard and reestablish themselves as the team to beat.  For my Crown picks sake, I hope the Piggies punk the Rebels.  I think Arky may be on a little better roll than peole think.  Even though A&M sux, Arky slapped them around bad just before Auburn.

Nothing personal, but I disagree with almost every one of your picks.

I think LSU gets it together on offense this week and beats Auburn 38-10.

I also think Arkansas shows us who the better team really was at the Swamp and puts Ole Sis away before the end of the 3rd quarter.  Arky wins it going away, 44-17.

Mississippi State has been close in a few games thus far and has the offense to stay on the field with most SEC teams.  Florida has lived on the proverbial edge for several weeks now, and the Bullies are primed to play the role of pusher.  Miss. State wins in a very close one 38-34.

After Spurrier recovers from the initial penalty he gets for having the field crew tape the yard markers rather than paint them, his team rolls.  BIG.  Cackalacky wins big, 31-3.

Kentucky will struggle a little with LaMo, but should still win with their defense.  KY wins it 21-10.

And finally...
The third Saturday in Gumptober will bring together the two largest redneck fanbases in the universe to see a resurgent offensive showing from Hardesty, Crompton and company...especially after having an extra week to prepare for this big rivalry. (Tennessee is Alabama's biggest rival if you haven't heard)
Jabba Cody and company will eventually figure out the new wrinkles and stop the Vols, but it will be too late.  Tennessee's defense will put the clamps on Ingram and little Kenny McStarrbarkernamath will struggle mightily again as Eric Berry's Heisman run gets a full head of steam, as he gets at least 3 picks.
Tennessee wins this one in close fashion, 17-13.

I thought you weren't posting here anymore, welcome back.  I figure one more loss by Auburn and we'll have to listen (read) Greasybammer's rants as well.

At the start of the year I thought Ole Miss was going to be better than Arkansas, but I've changed my mind and think Ark wins this game now, and probably won't lose again this year.

For all you betting people. (I'm not)  I heard a stat yesterday that LSU has failed to cover against the last 12 SEC opponents in a row that they have played at Dump Valley.  Doesn't mean Auburn will win.  In fact, it doesn't mean a damn thing.  But, if you're a betting man.....

If you followed my picks last week, I won you lots of money.  Recap:  I said Oklahoma would win outright, they did not my the spread I saw was 3.5 which meant Texas lost.  I also said take the Gamecocks and Arky with the points.

This week I would take Tennessee and the points and Arkansas.  I would stay the hell away from UF and Miss State, I think that one might get ugly.

Both of UT's lines are undersized compared to what they will be facing from Alabama. I think their starting DL lineup is even smaller than SC's, and SC's were relatively small. We see how the running game went there.

Their OL is small as well. Their starting center is I think 6'1 260 lbs? Giving up 100 lbs and 4-5 inches to the opposing NT is tough. Especially against Alabama's DL.

UT may try to stack the box and keep Berry close to the line for run support against our run, but Alabama should have 200 yards of rushing at least. I think this game will go much like last year's game.

If your criminal running back doesn't knock Eric Berry 15 feet through the air, he is a pussy.
