Kodi and the Wildcat
« on: October 01, 2009, 10:46:33 AM »
Seems like KB is going to play this weekend against UT. I think Kodi is a great team leader, so I definitely think he should be out there...but I kind of wanted to gauge some of the thoughts on the effectiveness of the wildcat so far.
I really can't be objective, I love that kid.

 So, thoughts?

A national championship is a wonderful thing, but if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it.

I think it was the best thing that Malzahn could have done in terms of keeping Kodi's pysche in check and making him a contributor to the offense.  He is athletic, and Malz is making the most of his athleticism and keeping everybody happy in this offense.

The Wildcat has been pretty effective so far in my view.  It's doing exactly what it's designed to do and Kodi is athletic and experienced enough to get the 4-5-6 yards they need just about every time.  I thought they used it a few plays too many in the first game though.

Oh, I have your number.

It's 4.  As in 4".  NTTAWWT

I think the reason Kodi is effective in the Wildcat is that he also has a legitimate ability to throw.  The fact that he was a QB makes him that much harder to defend (see the TD pass to Lutz against MS State).

It's a hard thing for me to get my head around (just as it was/is with Tebow in his first season).   You see Kodi in there and chances are 90% that he's going to tuck and dart over tackle.  And yet he keeps bursting through the line and picking up yards.

How can defenses not stop that?

If he were just a little better at throwing the ball, I think it could be devastating.  After the MSU game he very, very, very, very clearly indicated that his role with the team was a "this year" thing and he intends to go back to QB next season.   If the young man can work on his passing game, he could be seriously unstoppable.  Think Tebow, but quicker, more elusive and with a better arm...  I doubt Kodi will be circumcising Phillipinos, but you never know.

So in sum?  I like the possibilities it gives us.  He throws just ONE complete pass down the field -- really just one -- and it adds a dimension to the game that will cause DC's ulcers.

Agreed.

It works because D's know that any play could be the play where he actually DOES throw it downfield.

It is very successful and also very devastating.  Hence, why a lot of NFL teams now have a wildcat package.
