This may have been discussed elsewhere. If so....I don't care because my take is much more interesting anyway.

When you are up 30-7 with 4th and long in your own territory against a team that you have now taken total control against and rolling towards a 50 point win.....why do you call a fake punt? (Which got McCalebb hurt by the way)

Nothing about the circumstances warranted a fake and to me, it looked pretty damn bush league to do that against an outmanned opponent you're starting to beat down badly.

We were all VERY curious about that playcall as well. It just wasn't necessary for any reason. Certainly not for scoring purposes, and certainly not for energy purposes at that time.

Very much agree. Bush league. It is one of the only bad decisions that Chizik has made.

I wanted to hang 70 last night, but I want to do it running our offense, not "trying" to do it by faking punts. That is ridiculous...

Unless he makes the tough call at the end of the season, Boulware is going to be the demise of Chizik's Auburn coaching career.
This was the first game I haven't made in person this season, and I was shocked watching him every time they showed Jay on the sidelines. He just looked completely clueless...which confirms my suspicions.

A FUNNY approach I've seen from some of the other forums this morning that I've glossed over is that maybe we felt we needed to run the fake to keep our D off the field. Maybe we were scoring too quickly...

It was an awful call. I almost thought it was unintended.

When I was in high school, we had a red/green option on punts. "Red, Red" meant punt. "Green, green" meant fun the fake. One time against Hoover, our upback accidentally made the call "green, green" when we were on the ten yard line. He immediately said "shit red! red fuck!" but the ball was already snapped to him and he got creamed by about five Hoover defenders.

That's what I'm hoping happened.

Unfortunately I was unable to watch the game due to moving and no cable switch over the weekend, but I did listen to it. Stan White was just as confuse as the rest of us. It was intentional call, thats what makes even worse. Even if the coaches were "trying" some new wrinkles before the SEC play, it wasnt something that has sat to well with the fans. I seriously dont see that happening again unless it is necessary.

Questionable call at best, but if you are only doing it when necessary then it will not work.

I think it speaks volumes as to where we are right now. I'm not sure Chizik has confidence enough to be able to call that in a game where it is needed. So he tries it here and confirms what he's thinking, "If we REALLY need a fake punt, we're screwed."

Now what he does with this info will be telling. Right now we are horrible on special teams. Special ed like horrible. We used to bitch about how Gran was overworked and our special teams sometimes struggled, but the truth is, we had damn good special teams from a part timer. Now we have a guy who is supposed to be a special teams coach and we suck?

Jay may need to spend a few hours in the wordperfect lab and get his resume updated.

I agree the call was stupid, but think about it this way, and what I think Saniflush was getting at as well.

Yeah it didn't work, but so what. The opposing coaches now have to gameplan for it, does it mean we will ever use it again, who knows. However, its out there and maybe... one game when we need it....maybe it gives our guys a few seconds to get to the punt returner faster... maybe. Just sayin.
