Thoughts - Week 2

Thoughts - Week 2
« on: September 13, 2009, 09:13:59 AM »
Auburn...

- Not sold on the QB.  Todd threw a lot of ducks and was lucky they weren't picked off.  During the game last night, I can remember three occasions where my friend and I looked at each other and said, "LSU would have picked that off."

- Running game has vastly improved.  Even if we're slowed down, we're still going to run the ball efficiently enough to win the ball game.

- Defense needs to work on fundamentals.  Why was the tackling so piss poor?  This was evident on kickoff coverage as well.

- This offense is exciting.  From long passes down the field to Lee Ziemba waving his arms like a 8 year old girl in a backyard football game, Gus Malzahn is going to be a blast for the next two years.

USC...

- It's been a while since USC won a close game.  They usually blow a team out or lose to a lesser team by a few points.

- Barkley is the real deal.  Give him a few more weeks to get used to the speed of the game, and he'll be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.  I said this before the season - in three years, Barkley will be the #1 pick in the draft as long as the first pick needs a QB.

Ohio St...

- Their defense was impressive, but their offense was lackluster.  The defense lost all kinds of talent last year, but they're playing sound football.  Terrell Pryor and Co. were very underwhelming especially when you consider that USC replaced 7 guys from last year's squad.  If there was ever a chance for Ohio St to get back on the respect map, it was this game.  Whaddoya know, they blew it.

- Jim Tressel will be the most difficult coach to fire/force to resign.  They might not want him gone, though.  I think Ohio St fans believe winning the Big 10+1 is a respectable feat.

Michigan...

- Much like last week's situation with Miami, one team proved to be back and it wasn't Notre Dame.  Michigan, although playing in the Big House, proved they can win a big game under Rich Rod.  Kudos to him as well.  That was a serious low blow last week with the allegations of NCAA violations.

Alabama, Texas, LSU...

- If rankings truly rank teams based on how good they look THIS season, these three teams should drop.  Alabama was down 14-13 to Florida International late in the 2nd quarter.  Texas was down 10-6 to Wyoming right before the half.  LSU struggled with Vanderbilt.

- I'm not saying these teams can't climb their way back up, but top 12 teams should be blowing these opponents out of the water.  Of course, they won't move anywhere.  Texas might switch places with USC.  On the other hand, they probably won't.  Voters will only see the final score.

- Rece Davis accurately portrayed the bullshit of preseason polls and preseason hype yesterday.  When Texas was beating Wyoming 13-10, he said, "Texas will easily take care of business in the 2nd half."  How did he know that?  Does he have McFly's book of sports scores from the future?

- He didn't know anything except that Texas was ranked #2 in the preseason, Wyoming usually isn't any good, and Texas is Texas.  It's an easy guess to make when you say Texas will blow out a team like Wyoming, but they weren't doing shit at the time.  Texas looked mediocre, unprepared, subpar.  They lacked focus.  They looked nothing like a top team should.  Yet, they get a free pass because they're Texas.  Ask BYU if they think that's fair after they defeated Oklahoma and then blew out their mediocre opponent, Tulane.

Georgia...

- Do you really celebrate a win over South Carolina?  South Carolina could only score 1 TD against NC State.  Then, Georgia almost embarassingly loses to Oklahoma St.  Then Oklahoma St loses to Houston.  So, honestly, UGA fans, aren't you a little scared about this season?

West Virginia...

- Struggled with Liberty.  Struggled with East Carolina.  Struggled on defense.  I'm excited about this week.

Final thought...

- Look at the rest of our schedule.  Be very excited, folks.  Think about this: West Virginia looks average; Tennessee still struggles with turnovers; Arkansas still hasn't proven much; LSU's defense is very suspect; Ole Miss looked terrible in the 1st half against Memphis (who was blown out by Middle Tennessee St yesterday); and Georgia has definite weak spots including a defense that gave up 37 points to South Carolina.  Alabama is the only certified powerhouse team we'll have to face as of right now.  If we can get by without significant injuries, we very well could be looking at an 8-9 win season or better if you're a supreme optimist.

Consider me a supreme optimist.

I think we'll be playing Florida again this year. This Iron Bowl will be the best in decades.

Shit man, I'm an optimist, but I still think we win 7 or 8 games max this year.  Playing 11 in a row with our current depth situation will eventually take its toll.

That said, I hope to hell you're right.

The crash hurts a lot more when you're going too fast.

I think we're going to have a great year, but we do need a little luck.  It's going to be tough to beat LSU in Baton Rouge.  It's going to be tough to beat Alabama at home.  It's going to be tough to beat Tennessee in Knoxville.

You're confident we're going to win all four of those games?  3/4?  2/4?

We pull out a win in Red Stick and I will be shocked.  I am not as worried comparitively over beating Tenn in Neyland as I am LSU in Tiger Stadium.  Crompton looked like the inbred hillbilly that he is yesterday and two weeks is not enough time to put the training wheels back on.  LSU will have things locked down a little tighter by the end of October, plus it is in BR.  Not that I buy into all that home field advantage bullshit, which statistics disprove, but there is for sure some kind of weird kinetic energy from 90K+ drunken screaming coonasses...

bammer in Jordan Hare?  Reserving judgment on that one...  we have our own unique kinetic energy at JHS... plus bammer sucks, remember? We'll just see about that one as the season plays out.

LSU's record in BR at night is no better than average.  The 90,000 drunk coonasses just can't remember what happened so they think they won.

Not sure you can ascertain that quite yet.  Question marks seem to abound.  The next couple of weeks should make everything REAL interesting.

Somebody has to be up.

The Big 10 is terrible.

The Pac1 really has only one decent team and its not that great.

The ACC quit playing football several years ago.  Miami and FSU are back because they played a close game against each other?  Jacksonville State disagrees.

The Big Least doesn't have a single decent team.

The Big 12 has never been as good as its hype.

In the SEC, Georgia and LSU don't appear to be as good as expected.

Is Boise State really the best team in the country?

I thought this before the season, and I haven't seen anything yet to change my mind...Auburn will win in Knoxville.

I am also a little more optimistic about the chances at home against Ole Miss and Alabama...mainly because the offense has found that they can score when they need to.

I'm still expecting losses at Red Stick and in the NWA though.

I think after about the sixth game Buzz, it'll be a matter of if we can outscore our opponents or not.  Depth will show up eventually.  We shall see.

A great coach once said "if you score more points than your opponent, at least 90% of the time you will win the game"

Haha...yeah... I mean, unfortunately, our games might turn into shootouts....  I hope not, but I see us scoring lots of points maybe, but our D is going to give up lots of points down the road I'm afraid..

-Arkansas worries me more than UT after watching the UCLA game.

-Regarding your comment about Todd, we hashed this in the other thread and I agree. One thing I will say though is it appears that we atleast have a kid that can get it down the field to our receivers who seem to finally be playmakers.  That = much success for the running game!!!!!!

I'm not afraid of LSU the way they've been playing this year.

Not afraid of Georgia. Not afraid of Ole Miss. Not afraid of Kentucky. Not afraid of Tennessee.

I think we can play a tight ballgame and possibly come out on top against Arkansas & uat.
