Oink, Oink...da Flu, da Flu

Oink, Oink...da Flu, da Flu
« on: August 28, 2009, 08:16:15 PM »
I was one of those that laughed about all the panic about the swine flu this past Spring. What a joke that was, right?

Well, my wife loves to tell me "I told you so", especially when it does not happen very often. When all of that was going on this past Spring, based on her medical field knowledge and experience, she said that it was this upcoming flu season that we will need to worry about the piggy virus coming back much harder. Looks like she was right. Of course other medical folks was saying the same thing, so it is not like she was some great prophet.

Two weeks ago, in the office she works at, they had their first patient of the season that tested positive for the flu. A few days later it was being reporting in the Huntsville school system, where her office is located. Today, I get a call from my son's school system, Morgan County, telling us that they have now confirmed swine flu cases in 16 schools out of a 20 school system. Yep, 16 out of 20 schools already have this virus, and my son's school is one of them. Porky Pig's virus is getting an early start this year.

And just think, starting in 6 days there will be stadiums FILLED with, on average of, around 60,000 people.  All it takes is one person to have the porky flu when there's around 60,000 sitting in close quarters.

That was exactly what I was telling my wife. Also, high school football started last night and most youth league programs start tomorrow. I have to do 6 days of field observation in the schools this semester and try not to catch that crap.

From what I gather from people who are NOT the sensationalist media outlets:

This strain of flu is NO MORE virulent than any other.  If you are an infant, decrepit senior citizen or other person with an awful immune system, then you should worry.  Everyone else is perfectly OK...this is just another flu.

Relax, people.  Goddamn.

Just got back from the Walgreens getting my Rx filled.  Today has sucked.  Tomorrow is not looking a whole lot better right now.  But...Nyquil should be my friend in about 30-40 more minutes.

My wife teaches 4th grade.  To top it all off, she is four months preggers, I worry about her catching this shit.  Of course the school system has said they are are not going to tolerate sickness this year.  If your kid is sick, they will be calling you to some get them.  We shall see.

Holy shit! Watching the news on 48 WAFF and a Jackson County student has died.  They believe it was from the swine flu.

Yeah, it was a kid in Scottsboro. They are suspecting it was the swine flu, but not saying anything until they are sure.

Like I said, I am one of those that usually thinks most people panic and overreact, especially this past spring when this thing first hit. However, even the doctors at my wife's office are sort of amazed how quickly this thing seems to be spreading since its "comeback". Their concern, as other health officials have expressed, is that this thing getting such an early start on the flu season could be a bad thing because the vaccine for this particular strain is not available much in the United States yet and not predicted to be available until October or November. Before then, the strain may mutate and make the vaccine less effective if not obsolete.

The elderly and kids are really the ones that need to get the vaccine first because they are the population that this thing seems to really do a number on. My wife said it is not the swine flu virus that can kill, but the complications that are developed from it, such as pneumonia most of the time. So, though I am not worried about me, I will be making sure my son gets treated at the first signs of anything, especially since there are already many cases confirmed at his school.

Most of you probably remember GoAU (Joe) over at AUN. The daughter of a good friend of his got real sick and they had to take her to the ER. The girl had pneumonia from what turned out to be the swine flu. She was transferred to Vanderbilt where they had to do surgery and put a tube in her chest. While that was going on, he was watching the family's son for them and the son became sick and was diagnosed with the swine flu. Joe's two sons also became ill for several day, but fortunately for him they did not become as sick as his friend's kids and have already gotten better. Yet, Joe's four daughters have not showed any signs of illness.
