We have a new linebacker

It's getting pretty bad when you have to do this.  I understand looking throught he student body to find a kicker to get the ball in the endzone, but now we need student LBers as well.  Is it not kind of weird to be holding a walk on tryout 2 weeks prior to the first game?

Shaffer earns spot on AU football roster
Published Friday, August 21, 2009

Former Benjamin Russell standout linebacker Blake Shaffer got a rare chance to live out his dream, and he seized the opportunity.

Shaffer has wanted to play big-time college football his entire life, and earlier this week, he tried out with a group of 25 players for a spot on the Auburn Tiger roster. A day later, he got a phone call from AU director of football relations Wayne Bolt, who delivered the best news that Shaffer could hear.

“Coach Bolt called me and told me I made the team, and I was shocked,” Shaffer said. “Playing college football is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. I wanted it really bad. I worked out hard all summer, ran and lifted weights, and it paid off. My parents (Linda and Blake Sr.) were a big support. They helped me get the opportunity to try out, and I was able to impress the coaches.”

Shaffer was an All-Outlook selection last year, recording 62 tackles and anchoring the middle of the Wildcat defense. His addition to the Tiger roster continues the BRHS pipeline to Auburn. Fellow BRHS graduates Eltoro Freeman and Michael Goggans are currently defenders for AU.

The try-out was a one-day workout in the indoor practice facility with 25 total hopefuls. The players were split into groups and went through drills and agility work in front of their respective coach. Shaffer, who was evaluated by defensive coordinator Ted Roof, said though he was still unsure about whether he would make the team after the workout, he felt good about his performance.

“I was happy with my workout,” Shaffer said. “I focused a lot this summer on getting stronger in my chest and legs and on improving my foot speed. I figured I had just a good a chance as anybody else there. Coach Roof didn’t say much, but he knew a lot about linebacking and I enjoyed working with him. I’m just excited that I made it and am grateful for the chance to play.”

Shaffer said Freeman was a big help to him during the process.

“Eltoro kind of talked me through it,” Shaffer said. “He encouraged me to work hard and go for it. He asked me how I did afterwards. I told him I thought I did pretty well, and he was happy He was a great motivator for me.”

Though Shaffer is just thrilled to be playing football, playing for Auburn makes it a bit sweeter for him.

“Auburn has been one of the top schools in the SEC for as long as I can remember,” Shaffer said. “I love the people here and the atmosphere. I got to tour the athletic department and some of the other facilities, and they were spotless. It’s amazing.”

Shaffer’s goal for the upcoming season is simply to do what’s best for Auburn.

“I’m not expecting to play; I just want to help the Auburn football team any way I can,” Shaffer said. “I’ll do anything possible to do that, whether it’s playing a different position or whatever. I want to help them get closer to a national championship.”

Shaffer said he will get his equipment soon, and, pending a physical, he will begin practicing with the Tigers, who start the year Sept. 5 against Louisiana Tech.

Wow...

Well, at least the kid has moxie.

And at least it's not a "skill" position.

In fact, I'd feel better throwing any big ass dude on the line than I would holding a tryout for the kicker...

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that last kicker tryout worked pretty well.  I can't remember the dudes name, but he was the last kicker we had that could actually hit the endzone

Has it really come this far? Holy shit...this is embarrassing.

Say what you want about TT and/or Chizik...but this should be a direct reflection on the last coaching staff. How in the flying fuck do you have to have an open try out for line backer?

I'm no TT basher...but jesus h christ this depth chart is the suck!

Welcome to our.....former world. We had like 4 scholarship LBs in '07, and one of them was a converted DB. Linebacker is a tough position to play and stay healthy at.

I don't understand why this is embarrassing. This is routine every year.

You can only practice with a certain amount of guys during fall camp until the first day of school. Once the first day of school hits, you can add a certain amount of walk-on's. We held our normal walk-on tryout that happens every year at this time, and added the guys we wanted.

Now if they are forced into playing time, then yeah, we've got a problem. But this is just a local newspaper feel good story about a kid that gets to practice with the team and dress out for a couple home games.

Fair enough. I didn't know that. Maybe the dude can play special teams or something and see the field. God knows what I would have done to wear the orange and blue and get a chance to run out of the tunnel...

Thanks, I too did not know that you had to wait for school to start to have walk on try outs

I think the tryouts were probably last month or something. It is usually the goal to have your walk-ons join the team the day school starts. Thats the first day you can expand your roster to 105, if I remember correctly.

During fall camp you can have 105 players there.  Which includes returning players, incoming scholarship players, and invited walk-ons.  The first day that classes start you can add an unlimited number of players to the squad that were not in the 105 during fall camp.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Actually, he was both.

Does that mean he will one day be able to sue himself for medical malpractice, therefore being able to collect from his own insurance policy?

No, that would be a conflict of interest.  I will represent him and have him testify against himself...for a nominal fee, of course.
