Now, with his episode of jumping the gun and screaming racism, he lost the support of our men in blue.
Most firemen aren't for him either. I get to see both sides since I am our town's Assistant Fire Chief and I work at a police department. The government recently opened up a grant opportunity for fire departments to build new fire stations. Its part of the whole improving infrastructure thing. The guidance on the program is over 80 pages. The requirements for these new stations basically mirror his whole "green" concept. A certain percentage of the building has to be lit by natural sunlight during the day, a certain percentage of the hot water heating has to be done by solar energy, you have a system in place to reclaim a certain percentage of water used by sprinklers for irrigation, the sprinklers can't use more than X amount of water per hour, certain bulbs have to be used, you are required to have exhaust scrubbers in place to hookup to the trucks (so when you do your daily checks and run the truck in the station with the doors wide open the exhaust doesn't pollute), etc. Lots of other crazy shit that will drive cost way up.
In the guidance they admit that they will only grant about 100 requests and that those will go to the largest populations. It then says that priority will also be assigned to those projects that are "shovel ready" and already have engineering, etc done. Now, how many fire departments do you think have new station plans engineered to all of those green standards? Not many at ll. The government is in the process of changing emergency services grants into a format that awards for population, instead of based on need as it is now. Alot of us feel that the government is now dictating how things will be ran with emergency services instead of them consulting with agencies like NFPA, IAAA, etc as they have in the past. There is also a real possibility of the government using bean counters to award these grants as well, instead of actual fire service people. Bean counters don't know shit about the fire service.
A pretty good majority of fire, police, and EMS folks are not cool with alot of things the government has done in the past 6 months.
