What is the coolest or lamest high school job you had?
« on: June 09, 2009, 07:06:34 PM »
Coolest HS job I had was as a pool cleaner.  My junior and senior year i worked for a pool company cleaning pools in Buckehead.  Had my own company truck and a route of about 8-10 pools a day.  On many occasion i had the opportunity to see the local ladies in nothing more than their birthday suits (I guess they forgot it was cleaning day).

Made $8.00/hr back in 1984-85 so it was pretty good money as well

Best Job:

I worked at Alvin's Island in Destin from '93-95.  I was the only male on the top floor (clothing) and my boss thought I hung the moon.

Here was my typical day:  show up (hungover, natch, I was 16-17); watch hot little tourists try on bikinis until noon;  boss tells me that I need to run to Tropical Smoothie and get everyone something to snack on;  I'm gone for about two hours, show up with a rack of smooothies and an extra $15 in my pocket; get called back to the ladies' dressing room to offer my "expert opinion" on the latest bikini style; sit at the dressing room for two hours and then head out to begin my evening (calling all the girls that came in to shop that day).

I've served food and booze and nothing has compared to the goodwill that the customers show you after selling them a bikini that they feel "hot" while wearing.  More ass out of that job than tending bar at the Sandestin Hilton...truly.

Best Job -

Working on a farm out past Wilsonville one summer.  I helped an 80 year old begin fencing in his 1000 acre property.  I also cut a shitload of grass with a big tractor.  I was 16.  I learned a lot about hard work that summer.  Also, I was getting to work at 5am and being at the high school for football workouts at 4pm.  Not an easy job, but I cherish those memories.

Worst Job -

Working at Kohl's one Christmas.  Awful, awful experience.  I worked housewares if that tells you anything.

Honorable Mentions -

Best: Maxus Construction/Snow Cone Stand Attendant

Worst:  Landscaping

It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Coolest:  Right out of HS, I worked the summer for a company that sets up all of those grocery store demos.  I packed up cups, spoons and coupons to ship out to the ladies doing the demonstrations Monday through Thursday, and Fridays I traveled all around the area in the bosses car checking up on them.  Many were just old women, but there were a few cougars out there, so you know who got the most attention.

Lamest:  Drug store stock clerk.  Nothing but sickos coming in all day coughing all over everybody.

About the same here.  I pretty much spent my summers, hauling hay, working cattle, horses and chicken houses, fencing, tearing down old barns and building new ones, cleaning stables...etc..etc..etc...

The funny thing is I hated that shit and swore I would never do it again, but I honestly miss it.  I try to go out and help my dad as often as possible and I still help my in-laws with their hay and horses.  Good memories and bad memories were made, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I did have a job for a couple of summers landscaping. It paid shitty and it was hard work, then I usually had to come home from it and work my ass off around the house.

All I have to do is spend one day doing actual farm work before I realize why I got the hell off of it.

HS?  I don't think I've had a cool job my whole life.  I grew up working for my dad's back yard steel company.  I was of course the lowest guy on the totem pole, so I got to spend my days cleaning all the mill scale and grease off the steel when it came in, or getting it ready to paint after the cutting and welding were done.  Probably the 2 worst jobs in those strings of summers and weekends:
1.Painting the inside of steel tanks - 1st of all you can't breathe, 2nd of all, you've basically got to wear a body condom to keep the paint off of you, and 3rd, no matter how early in the morning you start, once the sun hits the steel, it's about 150 degrees inside the tank before you can get finished.
     2. We built several docks for the Corps of Engineers.  They were basically two big pontoons with a holding tank in the middle for houseboats to empty their sewer.  The steel sat in water all the time, and the paint that coated it was the nastiest, stickiest, foul smelling concoction you've ever seen in your life.  Kind of like that stuff on Superman 3.  Painting and cleaning up that shit sucked.

Cool summer jobs?  Not really.

My first job was pretty fun as a bagger and general schlep at Big Bear Grocery Store in Montgomery.  It was fun because there were about 7-8 of us working there and we were all good friends from the same school so we kept it going pretty good all the time.  The rest of the summers were just straight, boring labor with Upchurch Construction in Monkey Town.  Wear a hard hat and bust your ass all day.  Good times.

Oh, I just put in an on-line application for a weekend gig at Alvin's Island in the women's apparel department.

Best - Lifeguarding at the Officer's Club Pool on base.  Wives of soldiers would spend each day of the week there, tanning in their bikinis as the kids (if they had any) swam and their husbands worked.  I was paid to watch them.  Also worked with a female lifeguard who was my age that had a GGG cup size (or so it seemed) paired with a 28 inch waist.  I still wonder to this day if she has back problems.

Worst - working at a kennel at the local vet clinic.  Cleaned up dog/cat shit, walked dogs all day, got scratched and bitten by psycho cats daily.  The occasional bright spot with this job was when I got to help out with appointments, or better yet, surgeries, unless it was a neuter, which was never, ever, cool to watch.

Best: Stocker at Food World. We'd (6 of us) come in at 9pm, squirrel away a couple of 6 packs in the milk cooler, stock the shelves until midnight or so, then raid the deli sammich counter (grab a couple of beers) and head back to the loading dock.

Worst: Helping the old man at the saw mill. Fucking hated it! This kind of work is why God invented high school drop outs and meth heads. It gave me the incentive to bust my ass to make something better of myself.
