Finebum's Pathetic Attempt To Compliment Auburn

Paul Finebaum: From a perception standpoint, it appears Auburn has gotten the better of Saban
Posted by Paul Finebaum, Sports Columnist May 05, 2009 1:11 AM

Anyone can rent a limo. You can go cheap or spring for all the bling. But has anybody ever gotten more bang for their buck than Auburn did last week when the four-day Tiger Prowl rolled through Alabama?

And the most peculiar thing was seeing Nick Saban desperately searching for a way to explain a recruiting trick that he didn't think of first. Before an alumni function in Birmingham Thursday night, the first question from the media was about Tiger Prowl. Two days earlier in Memphis, Saban was asked the same question.

I really don't have any comment on what they do," Saban said. "... I really don't know that much about it."

He does now.

At least from a perception standpoint, it appears Auburn has gotten the better of Saban. Alert the media! Miracles can happen.

Will it matter? Will this be a one-hit wonder? Or can Gene Chizik and his staff start nipping at Saban's heels on a regular basis?

Most important, did the school do anything last week to bridge the gap between Alabama and Auburn, which seems about as wide as the Grand Canyon? Or, at the end of a long week, was it merely a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing?

Sure, the move by Chizik was a gimmick. But we're talking recruiting here. An old friend of mine, who was once a top recruiting coordinator at several schools, including Alabama, said: "Recruiting is like shaving. Unless you do it every day, you end up looking like a bum."

Auburn is way behind. Chizik has been slow to get traction in the early going. So the Auburn staff threw a Hail Mary -- and connected.

The Auburn coaches were not only photographed at every stop, but as accessible as a politician running in last place in a party primary. Assistant coaches did newspaper interviews, television shots and couldn't find enough radio hosts to yak with. On Thursday -- the same day the limo rolled into central Alabama -- an Auburn assistant appeared on all three major shows on the city's largest sports radio station.

You don't get that from Saban's staff since it is verboten for an assistant to be seen in public with his mouth moving.

There was another important aspect to Tiger Prowl as well -- stoking the home fires.

In politics, you garner votes by exciting your base. You toss them red meat and hear them roar. The Auburn fan base was spitting fire last week. However, I think the most important message of the week was that Auburn is going to make Alabama fight for every acre of real estate in the state.

When Tommy Tuberville was steamrolled early and often by Saban in recruiting, he made pathetic excuses, from casting stones to saying Auburn doesn't necessarily go after the top blue chips. It was a deceptive way of saying "we got whipped."

This point was driven home like a sledge hammer in Randy Kennedy's column Sunday when he pointed out that Auburn has not brought aboard a player in the past two years that ranked among the state's top 10 players.

Another key reason Auburn fans enjoyed the final week of April was because Alabama fans did not. Let's face it: Tiger Prowl got under the skin of Alabama fans.

Instead of shrugging their shoulders and laughing it off, Alabama fans struck back, belittling the approach, making fun and claiming it won't make any difference "as long as we have Nick Saban."

At times, Alabama fans sounded like they have the program that has won two of the last three BCS national titles instead of Florida.

In the end, it is anybody's guess what the Tiger Prowl will really mean. Still, after a long winter of discontent, people were saying nice things about the Auburn program. And Alabama fans were throwing stones and cracking wise.

In other words, it was a great week to be an Auburn Tiger.
This, of course, is the same guy that lead the parade of bammers last Monday challenging any Auburn fan to defend the Tiger Prowl, and then relentlessly mocked anyone who did.

Here he goes playing the neck nation like fiddles....

Gonna have to disagree.  Finebaum admitted that he giggled early on, but he had a change of heart.  He's maintained that since about late Wed of last week.  He's not the only one, as I originally thought it was a cheezy stunt.  He's said more than once that it got under the bammers skin.  Is he just playing them?  Maybe so, but he's using hard facts, and he's not going to waffle on it.  Like him or hate him, he's the voice of sports for most of the state, and he's admitted this was a good thing for Auburn.  Sincere or not, it's the line he's maintaining, and that's what counts.  This was all about PR for Auburn, and even the original detractors have come 180 degrees about.

All of the above.

As I said, Finescum can't just compliment Auburn outright. That would just cause the Earth to spin off of its axis. He tried. He really tried...

And JR, I have to completely disagree with you that his opinion is worth a lump of shit. I just posted because it's a slow news day...

I found this a little strange.

"Sure, the move by Chizik was a gimmick. But we're talking recruiting here. An old friend of mine, who was once a top recruiting coordinator at several schools, including Alabama, said: "Recruiting is like shaving. Unless you do it every day, you end up looking like a bum."

Didn't Trooper or Luper say this during the Tiger Prowl?

Trooper did use that quote to someone in the state media, but I have no idea where it originated.

I didn't say Finebaum wasn't Finebaum, but I've heard him on the radio.  He changed his tune.  Yeah, he makes most of his compliments backhanded ones, but he still did a 180 from last monday.  What's it worth in the end?  Not much really.

Finebum is such a fucking hack.  When Alabama is up, he sunshine pumps Bama to no end.  He also belittles Auburn and allows Bama callers to feel entitled.  When Auburn is up, he pokes fun at Bama and tries to make them feel bad that a school "like Auburn" could beat them at anything.
