UPDATE: Auburn blog takes issue with Meyer, calls recruits "straight from the streets of Miami"

It seems Auburn is willing to do anything to jump start its recruiting in Mobile, Ala. According to the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register, Auburn assistants permitted to make recruiting visits last week jumped into a white stretch limo, stuck Auburn decals on the side and headed down to Mobile.

Auburn went to several high schools to look at student-athletes. The goal was to generate interest in Auburn, where people would stop, turn and wonder why are there Auburn decals on that limo? (Shown right, from ESPN.com)

Do white stretch limos still have the same appeal to high school recruits today? Maybe they should have piled in to a stretch Hummer.

Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer took notice and was not pleased with the recruiting ploy. He told Pat Dooley of The Gainesville Sun the NCAA should look into what Auburn did. Meyer said, "I think it should," when asked if the NCAA will get involved. "We're trying to sell graduation rates and academics and trying the sing and dance routine.

"The Florida coaching staff will not be riding around in limos or ripping off our shirts." (A reference to a report that Tennessee coaches took off their shirts in the presence of recruits).

Now an Auburn sports blog has taken issue with Meyer's comments, ripping the coach for calling on the NCAA to look into the limos. Track Em Tigers says: "I talked to a recruit who attended the Florida-South Carolina game last year and he said he actually put his wallet in his front pocket because of the recruits who were there visiting. He said they were cast straight from the streets of Miami. The only thing Urban Meyer is trying to do is win football games. Don't give us this crap about graduation rates and academics."

Straight from the streets of Miami? That comment couldn't be any more racist or insulting. Whatever issue you have with Meyer, it is completely ridiculous to start calling their recruits "straight from the streets of Miami."

Gator fans, let's hear from you.

So many issues here....

One, the Gainsville Sun article that spawned all of this read:
Quote
STRETCHING RULES: You may have read where Auburn used stretch limos to parade recruits around the state of Alabama. The idea was that the limos would not only appeal to the kids but get Auburn plenty of attention because of the decals on the limos
Parade the recruits around? This is obviously false, or at best misinformation.

Secondly, the author of the Trackem Tigers article is right. He said it best:
Quote
There's no question that Meyer is one of the top coaches in America. There's little doubt his program is among the top five nationally. But to say, "We're trying to sell graduation rates and academics" is like Nick Saban saying he can't find Gadsden on a map. It just doesn't fly.

And third...racist? It's racist to say someone is a thug because they're from Miami? What race? The U, for example, is full of thugs from every shade of the rainbow. Are we going to pretend that Miami is not the crime-ridden city that was the subject of Scarface because that's being racially insensitive somehow?

Ridiculous...

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

So long as the ball players don't ride around in the limo, what's the big deal?

Urban just doesn't want to compete with anyone for 5 stars.

Isn't Urban the one that was so sensitive about Kiffin calling him out on something incorrect?  Maybe HE should go and read about the correct info before spouting off.  Douche.

Resident hispanic (and bammer to boot): Do you think referring to recruits as "straight out of Miami" is a racial slur?

I think the Prowl did push the envelope a bit on its tactics.
The part of student/recruits being called from class to meet the coaches raises the ante on the bumping into deal.
The fact that this was widely publicized negates anything being done on the sly, though.
Its all in the semantics, but you can expect some adversaries to cry foul. If anything comes from this it should be a mere slap on the wrist. The positive publicity will outweigh this. I think yall did good.
I'm telling yall in the next few year its gonna be us and yall toting the big stick. Fuck Bama and LSU. They are on their way down.

Now I wonder if ESPN will report how Urban's "jabs at Auburn" were incorrect, since they reported the "jabs" in the first place.  I'm thinking no.  :eyeroll:

So who's inbox should we flood?

In all seriousness, you'd think this would be a bigger story considering how much he lambasted Kiffin for doing basically the same thing: Running off at the mouth without knowing what the fuck he's talking about...

This really pisses me off.

"War Eagle fans have corrected me with dozens of e-mails. My bad. Now calm down."

Do as I say, not as I do, Auburn. He wouldn't have accepted a "My bad. Now calm down," from Kiffin. He bitched about his misinformation to whoever would listen. And rightfully so. This is the exact same fucking thing.

And that elitist jab about how they're just concerned with graduation rates...Really? You mean the guys that run up dead girls credit cards? Or the ones that beat and strangled women (Link)?

Hypocrisy, thy name is Urban Meyer. This really should be getting more press, just for the sheer hypocrisy of the whole situation, and Lord knows it was everywhere when Kiffin did the same fuckin thing to Florida...

This should be getting further under my skin as well but it's just not doing it.  Don't know why but outside of a small jab to one of the dillholes who commented under the article Wes posted I just haven't had the inclination to do so.

At least one journalist gets it...
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_bianchi/2009/05/where-is-university-of-florida-football-coach-urban-meyers-apology-to-auburn---in-case-you-havent-heard-meyer-based-onwro.html

Urban Meyer needs to apologize to Auburn
posted by Mike Bianchi on May 6, 2009 8:35:28 AM

Where is University of Florida football coach Urban Meyer's apology to Auburn?

In case you haven't heard, Meyer, based on wrong information provided by Gainesville Sun sports columnist Pat Dooley, said the NCAA should investigate Auburn for potential violations regarding coaches traveling with recruits in limos (Dooley later acknowledged his error in print thusly: "When you make a mistake, you're going to hear it. Last week I had an item about Auburn coaches parading recruits around in limos. I obviously misread the story because it was Auburn coaches in the limos going from school to school.")

But it was Dooley's original question that got Meyer in trouble.

When asked by Dooley if Auburn coaches traveling with recruits in limos should be investigated, Meyer replied: "I think it should. We're trying to sell graduation rates and academics and trying the sing and dance routine. ... The Florida coaching staff will not be riding around in limos or ripping off our shirts."

The shirt comment was in response to Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin's assistant coaches ripping of their shirts in a show of motivational machismo during a recent on-campus visit with football recruits.

But the point is this. Meyer's information was incorrect just as Kiffin's information was incorrect several weeks ago when he accused Meyer of NCAA violations. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley demanded a public apology from Kiffin and Kiffin was reprimanded by the SEC.

Granted, Kiffin seemed to drum up his misinformation about Meyer's recruiting tactics out of thin air while Meyer got his misinformation from a newspaper columnist.

  Still, wrong is wrong.

What's good enough for the goose is good enough for the Gator.

Kiffin had to issue an apology and so should Meyer.
The comments from all the jorts below are hilariously egomaniacal and hypocritical.
