Former coach Pat Dye addresses Tigers in stadium:

AUBURN - Former Auburn coach Pat Dye addressed the Tigers on the field that is named in his honor on Tuesday.

Auburn practiced in Jordan-Hare Stadium - on Pat Dye Field - after Dye spoke about some traditions. Running backs coach Curtis Luper was impressed.

"He's been around to the office a bunch," Luper said. "I'm locked into every single word he says because there's so much wisdom in his words. He's experienced a lot."

Tuesday, Dye told the players "what a great institution Auburn is," added Luper. "He mentioned how great the student body is. That's been the consistent at Auburn. There have been a lot of other changes, but the student body and the institution itself has been a constant, and it always will be. They're a part of that. They're blessed to be a part of that.

"Then he talked about the football program where it has been over the years. The undefeated seasons, 2004, and Coach (Terry) Bowden, in 1993. He talked about those years. He talked about a football team that stepped on the field and could be an intimidating team. It was 15 minutes. It was unbelievable."

Head coach Gene Chizik said "it was an eye-opener for them to have a legend like that come and talk to them."

Chizik said he took the team to the stadium because "they're tired and beat up, so we wanted to change the venue."

Part of the practice was devoted to scrimmage-like play-calling, but, in the end, Chizik said it was "basically a normal practice."

Chizik said the offense "made strides running the football." But Chizik said he'd like to see "more energy" on defense. "They got a little worn out."

Chizik said the Tigers will scrimmage Saturday and the quarterbacks "rotating in" will be with different groups, "so not one position has an advantage."

Quarterback Kodi Burns says he doesn't know who will be the starting quarterback, but he knows offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is all business.

"He's really serious about his stuff. We know that," Burns said.

"We have to take him seriously. We've got to try to do everything we can to make everything we're doing wrong right. He really wants perfection."

"Coach Malzahn," said fellow quarterback Neil Caudle, "is always coaching and he's always telling us what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong. That definitely helps. It helps us know that he cares and that he wants us to get better." Charles Goldberg --

I'm all about fucking with the AU fans just as much as the next guy, but goddamn, can there be just ONE thread on here without you pissing all over it, hoov5.
