Ron Mexico to be worth a cool 10 million?

Yeah, right.  I'm guessing he's factoring in profits from illegal dog fighting rings.

Michael Vick thinks Michael Vick is still worth a huge contract
By MJD

I don't know what kind of access Michael Vick has had to newspapers, magazines and the Internet in prison, but it seems like the news that he is no longer a hot commodity has not yet filtered down to Michael Vick.

In papers he submitted to a bankruptcy court, Vick indicated that he plans on making $10 million per season, which I'm pretty sure would be a record for an ex-con who had a career quarterback rating of 75.7 when he went away.

From the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

The embattled Atlanta Falcons quarterback is hoping to earn as much as $10 million a year or more, according to court filings in his bankruptcy case. Under the plan he submitted to the court, Vick would keep the first $750,000 of his annual income over the next five years. After that, a percentage would go to his creditors based on a sliding scale. [...]

In a March 4 court filing, Vick’s attorneys say he “has every reason to believe upon his release, he will be reinstated into the NFL, resume his career and be able to earn a substantial living.”

“He is hopeful to play quarterback,” Daniel Meachum, an attorney and business manager for Vick, said in an interview. “There is no person with his talent in that position in all the league.”

That may have been true at one time, but there are also no quarterbacks in the league who have spent the last nine months sitting in a jail cell and eating prison food. I'm not a nutritionist or anything, but I'm pretty sure that's not what NFL team doctors would recommend for keeping a guy in optimum game shape.

The fact of the matter is that no one knows how Vick will perform when he gets out of the joint, though it seems extraordinarily unlikely that he'll look exactly the same as he did when he went in. Factor in the amount of teams scared off by the P.R. nightmare, and I think we're looking at a salary closer to $605,000, which was last year's veteran minimum for a seventh-year player.

I heard in prison they only show bad movies, hence his reasoning.

Pacman Jones damn near killed a guy and he was reinstated. Ray Lewis killed someone and got suspended for a few games. Someone will pick up this overrated asshole the minute he becomes available. This is why I hate the NFL.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

You know, we have overestimated Ron Mexico's abilities to make himself useful post-prison.  Even though he knows he will play in the NFL for $10 mil, he still has a back up plan. The ingenuity of this guy is awe-inspiring!

Michael Vick would like to give you an estimate on that drywall

By MJD

From now on, when I think construction, Handy Manny won't be the first name that comes to mind (I know a lot of three-year-olds). It'll be Handy Ron Mexico.

Vick's lawyer told a bankruptcy court today that Vick plans on working 40 hours a week in construction when he gets out of the pokey. From the AP:

“You will hear from Mr. Vick his future intentions, how he’s going to change the way he lives his life,” his lawyer, Michael Blumenthal, told U.S. Bankrputcy Judge Frank J. Santoro.

Vick is serving a 23-month sentence for bankrolling a dogfighting ring, and his bankruptcy plan is based on the goal of returning to a professional football career. He briefly left a federal prison in Kansas to attend the hearing. He’s scheduled to be released from custody in July, but could be sent to home confinement in late May.

Blumenthal said when Vick is released, he plans to work 40 hours a week for a construction company. He did not disclose the wage or give any other details about the type of work that Vick will be performing.

I'm not sure I get it. Financially, I'd think the better option would be to spend as much time as possible training and getting back in NFL game shape. Granted, I don't know much about the construction industry, but I'm pretty sure NFL players still make much more money. Planning and preparing to resume the ol' NFL career seems to me to be a better long-term financial strategy.

Maybe the construction gig is about public relations, though. Maybe this is something Vick has to do, or something his people want him to do, to give the impression that he can be a normal guy and is willing to work a nine-to-five just like anyone else.

Whatever the case, I hope it all works out for him. And I'll give him a call if I need someone to build a deck for me.
