Dammit or Damnit?
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:30:47 PM »
Which is it?  You spell damn with an n on the end.  Why do I always see it spelled with an m when lengthening the word to reference something.."it"?

Which one is correct?

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

I've almost always spelt it as 'dammit'; I think that's the conventionally accepted way...unless you want to spell it out as two words 'damn it'.

It's actually two words.  You're saying "damn it" with "it" being what you're upset with.  Dictionary.com says the correct spelling of the colloquialism is "dammit."  I don't know why.  But, I guess that's the correct way.

I mean, you wouldn't turn "fuck it" into "fukkit," would you?

From a strictly Englsih standpoint, dammit does not really exist. But over the last 30 years, our language has been redefined in so many ways. The dictionary used to be the defining tool for all words. The problem was that it took a long time to get a new word approved and added. With today's technology, new words are added, but are not always added as "new" words. Hence the word "dammit" is in the collection of words, but not as a new word, but as colloquialism. I bet you couldn't use it in SCRABBLE.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Fuck Scrabble.  My computer version of it doesn't allow "mit" as in "catcher's mit."  It does allow "sialic" and all the other bullshit words the cheatin' computer spits out.
