Debate for Tarheel..and anyone else who cares
« on: March 05, 2009, 03:44:41 PM »
Since several of us go back and forth over ACC ball, most commonly concerning Dook and the Mountain Goats who stepped in hot asphalt....

Tyler Hansbrough...Big timer in the NBA or serviceable power forward?  Bust?

How do you see his career playing out?  Will he be a 18-20 point a night guy or a 6th man off the bench.  I tend to go against conventional wisdom, if most of the analysis I've heard from the so called experts is conventional wisdom.  Most of the breakdowns I've heard say his game is more suited to college than what he'll be facing in the NBA.  I think the guy is going to tear it up in the pros.

Why?  First, the guy is a beast.  It's well documented he works as hard or harder than anyone in the game.  He lives, eats and breathes basketball and fitness in general.  Second, the guy has the complete game.  Most people think of his inside game but he can step out and pop an occasional 3 and he shoots his free throws well.

In college, with the exception of Dook and Coach K's unwillingness to play anything other than man on man D, the majority of the teams he faces sag back in a zone and he's got to fight 2 guys virtually every time he gets near the bucket.  The NBA is designed for one on one matchups and this Hansbrough is just too active and strong for most guys to handle around the paint by themselves.  Depending on what team he goes to, he should be a power forward and not be trying to hold down the middle because he's definitely not the 6'9" or 6'8" they list him at.

Any takers?

I like your thinking Birdman.

And that (see underlined above) is certainly the question.

Let me point out the caveat right away that I am not a big fan of NBA basketball and that postition will tend to bias my own outlook on this particular subject.

Having said that it will probably not surprise you to learn that I am jaded on this subject.  Hansbrough is a phenomenal PF and arguably the hardest working kid in college basketball.  He's tenacious, hard nosed, and relentless in offense.  I've seen him handle his own getting the ball to the net while surrounded by a swarm of bigger (and he's not small mind you) players and getting the foul called while doing it...and then nailing his free throws almost every time afterwards.  I'd almost refer to him as a bully in the paint and under the rim which I think is great; throws a lot of opposing players off.

His style is perhaps too methodical though and this could be a weakness at NBA level where there's a lot more hustle and a whole lot more fluidity.  Speed is everything and while he's an extraordinary athlete I'm not sure that he's quite there yet either.  I can't exactly describe it but there's a certain mechanical style that he utilizes to a greater or lesser degree which, while effective many times inside, it is disconcerting and won't be workable in the NBA.  His perimeter game is a little stilted for NBA play too in my opinion but he's been improving in that area this season.

He has some extraordinary strong suits that would make him a good NBA pick outside of his methodology; having played in the Klieg lights at Carolina he knows how to perform under pressure.  And he works hard; loves, indeed lives, the game; and won just about every accolade that he could possibly win at college level.

I don't know how he'll evolve his play from college level to the NBA.  He doesn't need much development.  He's shown some great improvements outside that 3 point line and his inside the paint game is remarkable but needs more speed.

I think that he will do well in the NBA if he can hone his talents just a bit more yet keep his relentlessness intact.  Assuming that he gets adequate time on the floor with whatever team drafts him he'll do alright.

Maybe I'm not so jaded after all.

See, you talked yourself into it.  It's virtually impossible to find a concrete reason why he won't be successful.  He does it all and the biggest positive I see is that 90% of the time, he's going to be matched up one on one.  Guys in the NBA understand that you can't bust your ass 100% of the time on D.  The game is just not set up for that.  You've got 24 seconds to get a shot off, which means a ton more possessions during a game...which means if you man up like you do in college every time down the floor...you'll foul out before half time.

People don't realize that guys in the NBA play hard, tough D. However, it's a little different style because you simply can't bang every time down court or you won't last.  The NBA is designed for scoring..period.  Now, take a wild man like Hansbrough.  Who wants to match up with him all night?  With his style, they'll have to back off and in turn, give the man his points.

Will Hansborough be able to keep up that pace?  Remember, the NBA regular season has twice as many games as the entire NCAA season to include conference and NCAA/NIT tournaments.

So, while you argue that LeBron and Company can't keep up the pace, the real question is - will Tyler (and I think he should change his name to something more gangsta like ThiBo) be able to run like that for 82 PLUS games?

That gangsta name comment made me think of "Psycho-T" which is a name that is commonly used for Tyler.

To try to answer your question I think that he certainly has the potential to keep up but he's going to have to work on pacing himself better and modifying his style of play to find the zen of being more fluid and quicker yet retain that relentless drive.
