That's a good one there!  He's signed with LSU twice.  As long as his academics are straight, this is a sweet one here.

Rivals just announced they will re-rank D. Benton and include him into the 2009 class.  How much you want to bet they take him from a 4* and make him a 3*?

Yeah, I was going to correct you on that.

He'll be dropping (especially at Rivals), I can guarantee you that.

According to Hargrave/ Bastrop officials (now that they've calmed down..haha) tell Rivals and Scout both that Benton is taking one course at this time to ensure him qualifying and that everything points to that happening.  He will have 5 years to play 4.   F'baum hasn't talked to ONE person yet so far today that would give, nor care to give this correct information.

TIFWIW...

So you found 1 site that gives us hope that the chizpanzee made a great signing and that trumps all other people who know also.
The next coach can use him but I don't see him making it to Auburn when he couldn't get into the Louisiana Penal Colony.

Interesting read. I think this makes it look like RR had no impact on Bentons decision one way or another. I am not sure I exactly believe that. I think it is probably somewhere in the middle of what Kaos/weasle and Chopper/prowler bitch about. Either way, I hope he comes in and makes a big impact...and soon...

Quote
DeAngelo Benton signed with LSU out Bastrop (La.) High in 2007. He signed with LSU again in '08 out of prep school. The third time seemed nothing more than a formality.

Not to Benton. Not to Auburn.

After failing to qualify and enroll at LSU following a year at Hargrave Military Academy, a prep school in Chatham, Va., Benton, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound receiver, had his choice once again as to which four-year college he'd sign with Feb. 4.

Benton had stayed committed to the in-state Tigers since high school, but two years removed, he began having his doubts. He at least wanted to check out another school this time around. Enter Trooper Taylor. Enter Auburn.

Taylor, Auburn's wide receiver coach, just days after being hired, was testing the waters with Benton. Taylor wanted to know if Benton would at least come up for a visit. There were some new things going on at Auburn. A new offense. A new staff. A new attitude. He wanted Benton to see it.

So Benton did.

Without a peep being reported beforehand, Benton slid into Auburn Friday, Jan. 23. He was there for the weekend on an official visit. It didn't take him long to realize he was glad he made the trip.

"I had a great time. I didn't even want to go home," said Benton.

Hosted by receiver Terrell Zachery, Benton began meeting the players. He hung out with the upperclassmen, mingled with the youngsters. Benton talked at length with Taylor and new Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. He toured the stadium, the facilities. He got to see everything he needed.

"Me and Terrell got along good. We had a good time," Benton said. "We hung out with some other players, got to see the stadium. I enjoyed all of that. I also talked to the coaches and they weren't just talking about football and sports. They were talking about academics. I really liked that.

"I got a chance to talk to Coach Malzahn and see his offense. I loved his offense. I also loved the fact that I'll be playing under Coach Taylor. That's going to be good."

When Benton left Auburn that Sunday morning, he refused to give interviews to reporters. He had a good reason.

"I had it on my mind when I was down there on my visit that I was going to Auburn, but I knew I couldn't say anything," he said. "I didn't want to get harassed."

According to Benton, that's what comes with being a high-profile recruit in Louisiana, one that "spurns" the in-state school for one of its biggest rivals. His signing with Auburn created a minor firestorm in Louisiana, particularly in Bastrop. That's why on Signing Day he had a plan.

"I got up about six or seven and I knew I was going to sign with Auburn," Benton said. "I had made up my mind for good the night before. I had told the Auburn coaches. They were real happy.

"I got up and signed my letter at home, and then went and faxed it in."

Mission accomplished.

After the news broke, it didn't sit too well with the locals. It still doesn't. Benton still hears people talk about him making the switch, but he no longer listens.

"It doesn't really bother me if people talk about me or not," he said. "It won't change that I'm going to Auburn.

"Everything was perfect for me at Auburn. I think I can make a big impact as soon as I get there as long as I keep working hard. Everything worked out pretty good. I'm happy. "

The only thing left to do now is qualify academically.

"I've got everything in this time," he said. "I'm just waiting to hear from the NCAA Clearinghouse. I should be in Auburn in the summer."

Benton would have five years to play four at Auburn.
