I know you were talking about Chizik, but this question has been posed vis a vis Malzahn's spread offense as well.   I was excited about Tony Franklin based only on what I'd read in bios and parsed from historical statistics.  I had no knowledge of the man himself.  I was wrong.  Mea culpa.

Malzahn, however, is a known entity for anyone with a history of participating on Hog boards in the past few years.  We've seen him talk and seen him perform.  This guy is the real deal.

I understand the "once bitten, twice shy", "can't fool W again" mentality, but rest assured that Gus will impress you.
Don't get wrong Wes I am excited about the hire, especially over what we had been hearing (ie Pat Nix).  I am just afraid to get too excited over anything based on historical past.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Gus' offense isn't the spread.  It's the Hurry Up No Huddle.  You can run it with any type of offense.  He ran it in his first year at Springdale out of the I formation, mostly running all the time.  He switched to more of a spead offense when the talent to run that offense came to him.

Swiped from StatTiger on ITAT (emphasis is mine):

2008 Tulsa Golden Hurricane Starting Offensive Lineup:

(This includes each player’s Scout.com recruiting rating)

WR: Jesse Meyer 6-4, 201 / Star Rating: 1

FL: AJ Whitmnore 5-9, 170 / Star Rating: 2

SE: Brennan Marion 6-1, 185 / Star Rating: 3

SE: Trae Johnson 5-11, 170 / Star Rating: 2

TE: Jake Collums 6-4, 242 / Star Rating: 1

LT: Tyler Holmes 6-3, 299 / Star Rating: 2

LG: Curt Puckett 6-4, 297 / Star Rating: 1

OC: Jody Whaley 6-4, 302 / Star Rating: 1

RG: Justin Morsey 6-2, 282 / Star Rating: 2

RT: Rodrick Thomas 6-5, 354 / Star Rating: 1

QB: David Johnson 6-3, 217 / Star Rating: 2

RB: Tarrion Adams 6-1, 210 / Star Rating: 1

RB: Jamad Williams 5-9, 193 / Star Rating: 1

FB: Charles Clay 6-3, 222 / Star Rating: 2

Average Rating of Tulsa’s offensive starters: 1.57 stars

Tarrion Adams (RB): In the past two seasons, Adams was the premier rusher for Malzahn’s offense. He rushed for 2541 yards and 19 TD’s in the last two seasons, averaging 5.68 yards per carry. [Remember, this kid was a 1 star recruit] He also had 50 receptions for 493 yards and 4 additional TD’s. Adams totaled 13 games of 100-yards or more, proving a big back can be successful in Malzahn’s offense.

Brennan Marion (SE): Marion was Tulsa’s highest rated player at 3-stars and was signed out of Junior College. He was an immediate impact player, catching 82 passes in the last two seasons for an eye-popping 2356 yards and 19 TD’s. Brennan Marion was the Golden Hurricane’s biggest playmaker, averaging 28.7 yards per reception.

David Johnson (QB): Johnson was only a 2-star recruit who served as a backup in Malzahn’s offense in 2007. As the starter in 2008. Johnson passed for 3866 yards and 43 TD’s. He completed 65% of his passes for an impressive 10.3 yards per pass attempt.

Charles Clay (FB): Clay was also a 2-star recruit, who scored 11 TD’s in 2008. Clay rushed for 145 yards on 25 carries but hauled in 36 passes for 471 yards and 9 TD’s. It’s good to know the FB position in Malzahn’s offense is utilized as an offensive weapon and not just a lead blocker.

Jake Collums (TE): Collums was initially signed by Tulsa as a 1-star WR recruit but was moved to TE. During this past season, Collum only caught 6 passes for 39 yards but 5 went for a touchdown. Sounds like the TE will be a factor in the red zone.

It would be easy to write off Malzahn’s success at Tulsa as competing against inferior teams and or talent. Though there is some truth to it, one must also consider the talent level Tulsa put on the field. As I already pointed out, the average recruiting rating of their starting offense was just 1.57 stars. Of the twelve teams currently in Conference-USA, Tulsa was 7th in recruiting over the past five years.

Average Recruiting Ranking (Conference-USA):

Southern Miss ………… 68.0

Houston ……………….. 74.2

East Carolina ………….. 77.2

Marshall ……………….. 79.4

Central Florida ………… 79.6

Memphis ………………. 80.6

Tulsa …………………... 84.0

Tulane …………………. 86.2

UAB …………………… 91.8

UTEP ………………….. 92.6

SMU …………………… 93.0

Rice …………………….. 101.6

Bottom line, Gus Malzahn was able to produce the better offensive numbers within his conference with below average recruits and it wasn’t even close, except for the University of Houston.

Agreed.  The man comes up with some incredible stuff and it takes real creativity to take some of the angles he does.  Not always the run of the mill stats.

We will be in Red Stick for the Auburn game.  We usually only make it to Auburn every other year, so unless something changes we won't be in Auburn again til 2010.  But you never know... especially if someone can cough up some free tickets!!

Have a great 2009, hon!!

Just got back from a long vacation.

Let the record show that I was the one who told Kaos about AUUndercover and their lock-stepping bullshit when they banned me.

I was probably as negative as GreaseyWeasel at the time. Actually, on that site I know I was.

I agreed with him then, and have thus far been coaxed off the edge with some of Chizik's accomplishments so far. So we disagree now, but that doesn't mean I don't welcome here to bitch and debate to his heart's content.

It's what we do.
